Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

We used to get this prepared food delivered in Dallas. You could order as many meals as you wanted. It was really, really good- and cheaper than eating out. You just had to heat it up.

It hit 80 degrees here, again! What is going on?! This heat is not helping me with doing my class assignments.

A random discovery on the web. This is looks like the coolest run - ever! A 10k with a big chunk run inside the longest wine cellar on the planet, with wine tasting at the finish.

I would run that!

I have a dear running friend from my earliest days of running on the Texas Instruments national team. He is now 75 and took about 10 years or more off from running. He is now back into it and it has completely re-energized him. He said, “I just want to kick more butts each time I race and work my way up the butt ladder!” I love that.

Only a very few of my friends who ran Boston did OK. It was pretty warm and there was a terrible headwind. People were at least 5-15 minutes off their goals. That’s what is a beetch about marathoning. At that level you spend months in a training cycle of high mileage and lots of sacrifice for that one day- and then something goes wrong. It’s not like you can go do it again the next weekend.

I am short on steps today because my butt was planted in meetings much of the day- including for lunch in the building, so I didn’t even get to walk out to my truck to go to lunch! 5 miles running, though.

@MomofWildChild, you scared me for a moment with your deck comment but then mentioned your sister’s Trex deck. Fortunately, that’s what we used,

@sabaray, I tried prepared food deliveries from a nutrition oriented company many years ago and it was pretty good. Stopped using it at some point, probably because of a combination of cost plus the repetitive menu. Haven’t looked into the newer companies that are out there now but the notion of having someone prepare packaged meals of healthy food got me is very appealing as I’m cooking my dinner at 8:55 pm now, lol.

I enjoy cooking but I don’t enjoy the thinking through the menu and shopping for the ingredients, particularly if it’s something I’m not sure I’ll make again. Plated evidently sends you exactly what you need - down to the amount of items like grapeseed oil and miso paste. You still have to cook it, but they give you an idea of how complicated it is to prepare and how you need to prepare it (i.e., grill, stovetop, oven). I enjoy going to our farmer’s market (convenient to my Pilates studio) so that will help soon. I’ll give you the report.

There is a major fire burning not far from us in the national park - definitely interfering with air quality in the area, so doubt I’ll be running outdoors tomorrow. We desperately need the rain as the fire has expanded far more quickly and further than anticipated.

^^Wow, that’s scary! Isn’t this an odd time of year for it to be dry? Be safe please! Protect those lungs!

FallGirl, that sounds like a fantastic program. Love the photo - so many women of all ages! Please keep sharing reports of how it’s going. I’m envious!

I like to cook. Not fancy, but good food. We don’t eat out or take out more than once a week. Part of the reason I cook is for the leftovers for lunch. I pack everyday - TRY to get H to pack when he is working too. I’m not much for sandwiches and our cafeteria pretty much sucks so I love using leftovers for lunch.

@sabaray: I clicked out and looked for the Air Zoom Odyssey right after you posted, then went with a different Air Zoom for my daughter, and I got her to the doc last Friday as well. The sneaks came and they were 1/2 size too large, so the replacements will be here tomorrow, and we’re really hoping they help.

Even she is hopeful they will provide her the better support she needs, after trying on the first pair, which she approved of after a quick sideways snarl.

I hope they help her too, Waiting! For so long I got shoes whether or not I thought they were attractive - buying the right shoe has made a huge difference in comfort. I am keeping the Odyssey but I am also ordering a pair of Brooks Transcend.

Stopping by to wave both “hello” and “see ya later.” No time to catch up on posts from the past several days – and I know I’ll be WAY behind when we get back. H and I leave early in the morning on our big trip. Good health to all!!

Have a great trip!

Safe travels, CBBblinker!

Dropping Mr. off at the airport - again! My consolation prize: a lovely dinner on the patio at the Lodge.

Apparently I was way more run down than I thought I was. I fell asleep reading a book and ended up sleeping on and off for nearly 15 hours today. Whoops. (My sleep is still being interrupted by the pain but my new medicine is supposed to help me sleep through the night as well as help the pain.)

The problem now is I’m wide awake and have several doctors appointments and an advisor meeting starting in the early AM.

On the bright side, I’m feeling much better :stuck_out_tongue:

Also got word that my department is covering in full my fall semester. We’re supposed to teach our 2nd and 3rd years and be on fellowship the rest of the time but because of my illness, we all agreed it was better if I didn’t teach in the fall. So the plan was to move one of my GSI semesters to my 4th year (which would be a bit problematic since that’s when we’re supposed to be deep into dissertation research) but I was fine with that. So today I got word that they’re just putting me on a fellowship for an extra semester instead of still requiring me to teach for 4 semesters. (I hope that makes sense…) Basically, it was a wonderful gift from the department.

The Running Form clinic last night was interesting. Until watching the video of me running (watched it in slow motion) I had no idea how much more my right leg works and compensates for my left leg. I tore the meniscus in my left knee two years ago and I thought I was completely healed with no after-effects. It’s really apparent that my right leg is doing a lot more of the work. So something to be aware of and try to work on. Along with all the other things I need to work on to improve my gait!

Romani - great news about the funding. My son is in his 3rd year of his PhD program (Biomedical Engineering) so I know how important the fellowships and funding are.

CBBBlinker - have a wonderful trip! Can’t wait to hear about it.

sabaray - I am looking forward to hearing about how you like the Plated food service. I have toyed with the idea of signing up for Blue Apron or one of the others but have been hesitant. It seems as if even with having everything provided that it still takes quite a while to prepare the meals and that’s what is holding me back. During the week I just don’t have (or want to make) the time for dinner prep. Anything more than 15-20 minutes is more than I am up for. Let us know how you like Plated, I hope it is a winner.

MOWC - one of our really good friends did terribly at Boston and I felt so bad for him. He seemed to take it in stride, though, so it probably helps that others also had difficulty. I totally relate to your comments about the months of training and sacrifice just for that one day when anything can happen. This is definitely a learning process for me.

@romanigypsyeyes - last night between classes I was thumbing through some of the books at the studio and I thought of you when reviewing one in particular - “Yoga for Arthritis”. I ended up ordering it, as well as the yoga for depression that I mentioned earlier in the thread. I thought some of the exercises might be appropriate for you (of course, check with your physicians) but I wanted to mention it. Tons of photos demonstrating different exercises as well as suggestions for comfort. It might be an option for when you feel like some gentle exercise but can’t get to a pool.

Romani- I’m glad your department is working with you so well. And that you are feeling better!

It was a gorgeous morning, but we are supposed to get some rain later (which we need).

I signed up for the Oiselle Voilee ambassador program. You pay a fee to join but get discounts, a racing singlet and some free stuff throughout the year.

Romani, it is great that you are surrounded by understanding people who are willing to be flexible.

MOfWC, that sounds like a cool program.

I got home late last night and was so tired that I looked at my Fitbit and decided to call it for the day. As I was nesting in the bed, an inner voice started nagging me. I flew off the bed and ran 15 times up and down the stairs to get those last few steps in to make my daily quota of 10,000 steps! It felt so good when I was done.

@Bunsen - Inner demons can be helpful sometimes!

That’s pretty dedicated, Bunsen. I’m impressed. Mine was lesser OCD. I was lacking about 1000 steps at about 9:00 to get to 6000 over my running, so I went up and down the hallway and circled the kitchen during TV commercials. There’s a new review on DCRainmaker of the FitBit Alta. It has its plusses and minuses, as do all of the trackers.

Thank you for that, sabaray!

My dad was down for the week to help with everything and he got our hot tub up and running. I plan on using it as a very tiny pool while I ease myself into getting back into swimming. My PT gave me some exercises that I can do in the small tub space. So there’s that

That will feel good, Romani, and I’m so glad to hear you had some help.
