I would be in for a Philly meetup. This year would have been perfect with son’s center city apartment, but that goes away at the end of June.
I’m going to run in Oak Mountain Park in Birmingham tomorrow. I did one of my first triathlons there in about 1981. I was living in Dallas at the time and I expected to do really well. The hills killed me on the bike.
I always love a trip to Philly.
It is ridiculous, and I don’t mean to sound like I’ve been ignoring my daughter’s problems with her footwear, but until now nothing has been right. When I returned from the admitted students weekend with D1, the first thing D2 did after she said “Hello,” was “I really like these sneakers. I don’t have any pain ** at all** running in these. Can we get another pair?”
Right-o, little one. Sure thing.
What do they say in Beowulf, “We shall sing your name?”
Never been to Philly!
Very foggy here this morning, so 5.3 on the treadmill. I just didn’t feel it would be safe running outside at 5 am. Tried out the Transcends and I love them. Very, very comfortable.
Mansfield, we’d love to hear more from you! Please chime in whenever you’d like. I seem to remember you from the very early days of the thread.
Rain through the first half of this week. No outdoor workouts on my playground, have to ride indoors. Ugh. Did a 60 minute indoor base ride last night, except I stopped at 50 'cause I just couldn’t stand it anymore, lol. Goal was to keep my hr between 132 and 147. It just droned on and on and on and…
Interesting article. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/health/biggest-loser-weight-loss.html?smprod=nytcore-ipad&smid=nytcore-ipad-share
A study of the contestants of The Biggest Loser and why they almost all gain back weight. Their metabolism slowed markedly, meaning they have to eat much less just to maintain.
Of course, what wasn’t compared was a slow, steady weight loss – these people lost a lot of weight really fast in unsustainable ways. And some of them still have food issues (one of them talked about eating a whole bag of chips in one sitting).
But questions are raised about whether our bodies naturally gravitate toward a certain weight, how much genetics and body chemistry play.
I read that NYTimes article about slowing metabolism and wasn’t particularly surprised (it’s not exactly new research, just better presented). Then I googled what my expected resting metabolic rate should be and did the math. To my pleasure, my RMR is pretty much what it should be… So I guess taking four years to lose 61 pounds is the right idea.
Reminder of how much fun it is to run somewhere new and beautiful. Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham. Gently rolling asphalt road with no traffic. Heavy trees, golf course, trails into the woods if you were so inclined. Faster pace for me- just felt good. Took a selfie with some goats in the background after I finished. 5.6 miles. When I entered the park in my car and stopped to pay the small entrance fee, the attendant said, “That will be $5.00.” I said, “I’m a senior, but thank you.” $2.00 for seniors(over 62). She stared at me and said, “You look amazing!” That was a good start to the morning. Went to Waffle House with my relatives after the run. Love that place.
1.5 miles on the treadmills doing speed increase intervals from start to end. Then headed over to the easy flow yoga class.
Figured I’d better run BEFORE yoga - running afterwards - after chilling out to yoga - seemed counterproductive!!!
I could easily eat a bag of chips in one sitting. Anything salty!
Found out today our company is closing & all employees will be laid off in waves. They’re being quite generous, so is this bad news or good news? I’m still deciding, but leaning toward good.
Wow, is this a shock Gertrude? You’re leaning towards good - that’s good, right? I hope they let you know more info- about the waves, severance, etc. How long were you planning to keep working?
It will give you more time to run!
Seriously, I hope it all works out well for you. I’d be turning cartwheels if it happened at my job!
It is a pretty big shock - but the more I think about it, the happier I am. I think cartwheels may be in the future, sabaray!! abasket - yes, we all got full information on our date of separation (January 2017 for me) & generous severance, so plenty of time to figure out my next step.
It was weird to come back from the all-company meeting & essentially put the project I had been working on before the meeting into the trash pile. It had been due by the end of the day. Now - never!
LOL, while I was typing this, I got an email that my Craft Classic half marathon entry was picked & I win a free pair of running shoes. The news just gets better! I can get any shoes carried by Road Runner Sports - wow, I’m going to go all out!
New shoes - way to go!
I can’t imagine your situation Gertrude - I mean, I can - I’m a grant funded program, so never any guarantee, but I think throwing a project in a trash can might make me sick! So what do you do between now and January 2017?
We’ll be moved onto the team that will wrap up another project closer to completion. The one I was working on was further back in the pipeline & has essentially been stopped in its tracks. It’s so weird, because we have really worked hard & stressed over this project for the past 2 months or so & actually achieved a major milestone this morning. Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that is is just…over.
Wow, Gertrude that must have been quite a shock. I’m glad you are ok with it.
So I pulled into the parking lot at running group tonight and it started to pour. And hail. After the hail stopped I went in and we had another good speaker and then were about to go out and train in the rain when lightning started. Disappointed but made the best of it as the speaker led us through some muscle strengthening exercises and then one of the coaches led a fast paces walk around the school hallways. Not what I was hoping for, but not bad.
Gertrude- great about the race entry and shoes! Sorry about the job trauma, but it sounds like it might be a good thing after all.
Gertrude, hugs. Being told that your company is folding could be like being smacked into the face with a wad of divorce papers. Sigh. You will grieve, there is no escaping that feeling, but the effect can be minimized by focusing on other things, so keep on running and posting here. Do not do a BB and disappear.
Exercise is therapeutic.
So cool that you got the shoes. Go all out.
@GertrudeMcFuzz - Hopefully your industry is different than mine, in my field it gets exponentially more difficult to get a job as you move past a certain age. Sounds like you have plenty of time and a nice package, the last couple times I got laid off I got walked out the door that day with the bare minimum they were legally required to give. Glad you are feeling positive about it.
This was me today:
