I’m not sure how PlantMom does it. Ran after work - and after I fed and walked the dogs. 70 minutes with long intervals. 81 miserable degrees. Awful. This is why I need to run in the morning.
A little disturbing to come here and see that BB has been shot!!!
Three mile run in the HEAT. Had to do it at 5pm or not do it at all. Not the most pleasant for the first run in the 80’s, but got 'er done.
OMG, you are my heroes. Running in 80 plus degree heat after work is no small feat - awesome job. Cool 60 or so here, but no running. My exercise tonight is fetching the garbage cans up my looong 3 Fitbit floor high private hill.
No working out for me today. Up at 4:30 to get to hospital to be with family of a friend who was having serious surgery (everything’s ok now), home by 5:30, 20 minute nap, then training clients until 8:45. Taking the night off. As much as I have an almost irresistible urge/desire/(obsession?
) to work out, I think I’ve finally matured enough to know that nothing good will come of doing one of my nutty workouts on 4 hrs of sleep. It’s better just to be kind to myself tonight. Tomorrow’s another day :).
I also had a miserably hot run. I had wanted to do 6-7 miles, but ended up just doing 5. I have decided that when the temperature is over 80 degrees, I’m not going to run more than 5 miles. I’m going to look at my calendar and see if I can figure out a way to get a longer weekday run in during the morning to beat the heat.
Bunsen - I am glad that the injection is over with and I hope that we hear good news in the next week that it did its’ job.
I am on a conference call right now scheduled to go until 11 pm. At the rate it is going, I may be online all night. Arrgghh!
Michael- I’m glad things went well with the surgery.
What MOWC said - glad to hear your friend fared ok with the surgery!
Ooh, Bunsen, glad you didn’t have to see that needle, too! I hope this does the trick for your hip.
Michael, I’m happy your friend is okay after the surgery. Continued wishes for a complete recovery.
C3B, my youngest is here for just a few more days. I’ll be sad to have this visit end.
One thing I know for sure: running in the heat is really hard, physically and mentally. One reason I get out to walk or run in the morning instead of afternoon or evening is based on my fear of overheating in the ever increasing daily temps and humidity of central FL. Just walking with DH before dinner in the summer is rough. C3B, sabaray, and abasket; my hat’s off to you for the late afternoon runs today.
I did get out for my own run today–4 miles in the morning with another mile to cool down. Temps in the mid-70’s. Featured healthy food item from the lunch kitchen was a spicy bean and walnut burger with avocado and chopped cilantro on whole wheat toast.
My Garmin F 235 arrived this afternoon! I think I finally have it set up for the bare basics on the computer and phone, although being Ms. Impatient, I neglected a critical step of charging the device first which added a series of completely preventable headaches. What I want to be able to do is see a map of my run, with paces marked out at regular intervals. Is there an easy way to do this? Will it automatically do this since it’s linked to my phone? It’s too dark and too late to give it a trial spin right now
Coincidentally, today when I ran, my FitBit HR run map was not recorded. It looks like the screens have been updated and the mapping function I could use while having the FitBit linked to the phone, glitchy as it was, has been eliminated.
When it syncs to Garmin Connect you will have a map. I set mile splits on my watch and those will be on Garmin Connect. I only use Garmin Connect as a conduit to get my data to runningahead, but Garmin Connect has everything there, too- heart rate, etc.
Plantmom, I do admit to thinking of you today when it was hot running - when you say you do it routinely in the 80- 90 range! Yikes.
That’s why I like my dusk run - a LITTLE cooled off!
Quick trip to the beach is in order tomorrow morning - steps on the beach are the best steps of all!
Hi everyone! I’m back from my 2-week trip to Peru. I have 350 messages on this thread to read – not sure if that’ll happen, but I’ll try.
7 days of the 2 weeks was a back-country trek in the Andes. While I didn’t get altitude sickness, the thin air definitely affected me. The second day, which was all up hill – really steep and really really high – was incredibly tough. I survived by counting steps. At first, 50 steps and then I rewarded myself with stopping and taking deep breaths. Then I had to stop after 25 steps. The last half hour, approaching the steepest and highest part (17,000 feet above sea level) I had to stop after 2-5 steps. This was hands down the toughest physical thing I ever did in my life. I really couldn’t walk more than a few steps without having to stop, gasping.
Funny thing – my husband, who was a great athlete back in the day but not so much now, had no problems with this part of the trek. But the next tough day, day four, at a lower altitude (“only” 14,000 feet) – I had absolutely no problem and felt really strong, and he struggled.
Great scenery, great hiking. I haven’t run or lifted weights or done my other routines in 2 weeks. Was going to get a run in this afternoon, but it was 91 degrees (!) so I decided to wait until the morning.
Glad to be back, and I hope everyone’s been keeping in shape during my absence.
Yay, fireandrain is back!
I am doing a happy dance tonight - a Shark shake!
Garbage cans are safely tucked inside the garage, Pushups and weights and a few more steps to round up the excitement.
Welcome back! I bet it was incredible, but it sounds SO hard!
Sounds like a fabulous trip, fireandrain!
Bunsen, weren’t you supposed to take it easy yesterday? And what is a Shark shake exactly? Call me clueless!
Easy 30 minute “recovery” run this morning; again used my compression sleeves and they helped. My shins are a little painful. Drank a lot of water last night - but also had a “rose lemonade” cocktail in honor of National Wine Day (who knew?) and a delicious crab cake.
Welcome back Fireandrain - sounds like the trip of a lifetime!!!
Welcome back fireandrain! Sounds awesome.
My Fitbit is up to tricks again. Walked almost 5 miles this AM but am showing less than 4K steps. Just plugged it into charge and hit the button on the side like I did when I had issues sometime back. Hopefully it’s ok.
fireandrain - wow, that sounds like an amazing trip and some truly incredible hiking. I thought Peru was so much more beautiful than I had expected and the Andes were just gorgeous. I am so impressed that you were able to hike at those altitudes. The highest I have ever hiked was 14K and I was definitely having issues with needed to stop often to catch my breath. Welcome back!
What a trip, fireandrain! Wow to your hiking. It must have been just gorgeous.
National wine day yesterday? How did that escape my attention? I had a sake sangria beverage with dinner last night. sabaray, do you find the compression socks helpful?
Fallgirl, my Fitbit did very strange things yesterday. The replacement can’t come soon enough because this one is barely staying together even while strapped to my arm.
Today was going to be an easy day for me, but my legs felt good this morning, it was only 70 degrees, and the new toy beckoned…I ran with the Garmin for 6 miles. I love it! It gave me all the information I wanted, including the map, and so much more. The sync was very easy to do–nary a glitch I’m aware of. Because the watch is bulky, I’m planning to wear it only when I go out to walk, run, or work out. Thank you DEHW group for your suggestions for this particular device. Next up–figuring out how to create an interval training workout.
Don’t worry PlantMom - National DRINK wine day will be coming up February 18th. I only knew because my favorite local restaurant posted the beverage made with rose wine and my daughter tagged me in the photo and suggested I go have one! I think she knows life has been stressful!
I’m so glad you like your Garmin. The interval workout my coach has me doing now consists of a 10 minute warmup, 10 minute easy run, then intervals of 5,10,15 minutes at a harder pace with a 5 minute walk/jog recovery between each, ending after the 15 with a 10 minute cooldown.
I uploaded my data (both old and new) to runningahead, MOWC. I can see I’m really going to like it and now that I have it synced with Garmin Connect it will be super easy. Thanks again for the reminder.
“Bunsen, weren’t you supposed to take it easy yesterday? And what is a Shark shake exactly? Call me clueless.”
I did take it easy! Only 8,500 steps. As for the happy dance… San Jose Sharks won last night and are going to the Stanley Cup finals! Yeah.
