Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

BB, I hope you can get your hip pain solved - not just for exercise sake!

Was able to do about 30 minutes strength training video with lots of squats and some weights last night while it poured outside. Hoping to get a run in this evening.

Bunsen- I’m sorry there isn’t more improvement. I still wonder if your SI joint could be out of place. I hope you can get it solved!

sabaray- My daughter would do her assigned minutes and then walk in if she hadn’t reached the car/home by the time she was finished. Some times she would round up a little bit to get an even mileage.

Bunsen= good article. I think one of the problems people on plans like the 5-2 is that it is easy to greatly under-estimate your calories. A salad with dressing can be many more calories than you think.

I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. That race really took it out of me. I want to do about 3 1/2 miles today- but not right now!

A very interesting day here in the small European city we are visiting today. 12,000+ people on bikes poured onto the downtown streets and rode 20 km - just for fun (it is a lot of folks for this place!). It was the seventh annual festival of bikes, friends, and fun. The organizers are trying to promote biking as a way of staying fit and as a means to combat the gridlock. Very cool.

I will get that blasted hip fixed. I have enough patience. The only issue is the race in August, and that worries me a lot - I need to be able to run it or I will feel like a total failure. For some reason, I did not feel that way about scratching from Boston when my knee needed some rehab. The good news that the foot is almost healed, and the Eileen Fisher sandals are amazing. I easily walked in them 10,000 steps without a breaking in period, and not a blister!.. Highly recommend these shoes for anyone considering a trip that involves a lot of walking. I am so glad the docs did not do any stitches on the foot and instead used the superglue/steristrips method: when the upper layer of the epithelium renews, the cells carrying the glue fall off, and the strips fall off with them. As the doc said, it happened on the 5th day or so. By that time small, shallow wounds should be healed.

Back to the hip, did your doc take X-rays? Remind me. Did he offer a diagnosis?

Useful info about the glue!

@MomofWildChild

Thank you. You agree with all of those reviews on Amazon re: Varidesk!

Bunsen strikes again- I ordered the Eileen Fisher sandals in black. I got them on sale from Bloomingdale’s. I liked the metallic color with the white soles, but the all black will do better for work.

Drove to the FLAT trail a little while ago since I couldn’t stand the thought of any incline today, and did 3.7 miles. It wasn’t too bad once I got going.

Back from the Rock & Roll Half - wow, definitely the most fun race I have done yet. We ran all through the San Diego neighborhoods north of Balboa Park & tons of people were out with signs, handing out various snacks (including beer, bloody marys and shots of bourbon). Soooo many runners - 30,000 pus I think.

I saw Meb at the awards ceremony, along with Shalane Flanagan & Amy Cragg, who took first and second in the half. Meb ran the half as the 1 hr 30 min pacer. I did 2:35:16 officially, though my Garmin registered 13.3 miles. My 13.1 time would have been a PR - oh well, them’s the breaks. Now for a coma; I mean nap.

To answer your question, Lizardly, I have been imaged like there is no tomorrow… Lots of very expensive pics were taken. All images are “unremarkable” - on X-ray, there is a slight deformity in the hip bones, but the doc thought that it was not significant enough to cause any issues, so she suggested the injection to see if that was the problem spot. Apparently, the specific joint is not. So she will probably try SI joint next or refer me to a surgery specialist. We shall see. I can still walk and run, just with some discomfort. I do not like that feeling.

Walked 17,500 steps today, mostly around the city. The sandals worked very well. I hope you will like them, MOfWC. They are like dressier Hokas  I am very tempted to order the grey version, too. EF shoes rock. I bought some Clarks slip on shoes as my “insurance” in case the heel would not heal in time, but it did… quite nicely.

My boss has a Varidesk and loves it.

Bunsen- I know it is frustrating, but I bet they can figure it out. Also, since SeaWheeze is a half, you can walk it if nothing else!

Gertrude, congrats!!!

Congrats Gertrude!!

Nice job, Gertrude! Sounds like a lot of fun.

Wow, Gertrude!! Way to go!

After a few days of slacker-dom, I did a BBG/Kayla Itsines workout (basically HIIT) then walked 2.5 miles to go to SoulCycle. I have to say, I liked the SoulCycle! Good instructor and I didn’t feel anything we did was unsafe or too much.

Yay Gertrude! It sounds fun. Good job.

^^^I went to a Soul Cycle class in NYC with my D when I visited her earlier this year. Class was fine–what I didnt like was the music. It was too loud for me (old fogginess must be rearing its head).

Rainy and chilly today–did 40 minutes on the elliptical.

Congratulations on your race G.

@GertrudeMcFuzz congrats! You rock!

I haven’t gone swimming these past two days like I wanted to. My meds have been making me very sick and I have been barely able to get out of bed :frowning:

I am finally starting to feel better so the plan is to start swimming again tomorrow before we go out for a nice anniversary dinner

Congrats Gertrude! That does sound like a fun race.

Happy Anniversay Romani - hard to believe it’s been a year!

Gertrude, that sounds like SO much fun - way to go !

BB, if you’re getting that many steps in in your day, the pain must be pretty tolerable. I hope you can find a solution - that’s simple - soon.

Yeah for the opportunity for an active day - it was a weird weather day - windy, 75 and a mix of sun/clouds/quick showers there and there for part of the afternoon and then just a breezy, breezy beautiful night. 24K steps right now between pup walks, yard work and a 3.5 mile run. Yippee!

Congrats to both MoWC and Gertrude on their races.

BB, I was gone when your hip pain started, so I don’t know the details – but I hope a cure is found.

Sabaray, I continue to be so impressed with your desire to not just exercise, but to become better at it. The work you put into both your running and your Pilates is just so impressive.

That article BB linked to, the 3 reasons we can’t lose weight – the solution, as many of us have figured out, is careful tracking of food input and exercise. A friend of mine just posted on FB that after years of trying, she finally lost 30 pounds – and she said it was thanks to tracking her exercise with Fitbit and writing down every bite she eats.

I did go running the other day, after complaining of lack of motivation here, and ended up having a faster run than the last couple. So, yea! Yesterday I dusted off the bike and pedaled around the neighborhood for 80 minutes. Today I had some stuff to return at stores, and decided to walk. About half-way there, it started pouring. I got drenched. But hey, I got lots of steps in!
