Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

^^You people are all my heroes today!!! Amazing!

I have to be in “do what I can, when I can mode” right now - T-minus two weeks to my sons wedding and as expected while it/they haven’t been stressed during the planning - and not overly aggressive in getting things done in a timely manner, we are now dashing to get details done. Every hour I have seems to be dedicated to work, managing the basics at home and wedding running/planning/doing. Bits of exercise here and there. That’s just all I can manage! I have to let it be. I actually would probably rather have two weeks of crazy then a whole year consumed by planning - we’ll deal with it!!

The other effort is to work to keep my eating in check - being so busy there isn’t too much time to eat - so there is that!!!

I’m fighting a virus, yesterday I felt terrible. Didn’t even wear my Fitbit and went to bed at 8:30. Other than yesterday I’ve been doing something active every day. Did my C25k today despite this cold.

Good job MOWC, sounds crazy! I know I see people wearing capris to run when it’s really hot out. I think people get self conscious about their appearance which they shouldn’t or the dreaded friction! It seems that longer shorts could cover that but I don’t know.

Abasket, stay in there. This is only temporary. Enjoy this process to the fullest.

Congratulations on your finish MOWC.

I hope you feel better soon, deb.

Abasket - 2 weeks away I think you have a good excuse for just doing what you can.

Went to yoga this AM. Will likely go for a dog walk this afternoon, it’s very humid. Planning a long walk tomorrow AM and then Sunday restorative yoga. I could be doing more but this is going to be it for this weekend. No donut yesterday and chose a healthy option at my department’s lunch so that counts for something.

Working on a hack for a standing desk. Some good ideas online using inexpensive items from IKEA. I’m hoping this will help resolve the neck pain.

Deb, I hope you feel better soon. You need a break!

This morning at 6:30 (late for me) it was already 64 and 100% humidity - I can’t imagine running when it’s approaching 90 degrees. I passed a woman who was running today dressed in all black - long sleeves, long pants - and had a white vest over her shirt! If it was a fashion statement - wasn’t a very good one. How does one cool off wearing that kind of gear?

Deb, I agree with Sabaray - you need a break and/or a vacation!!!

Midwest, I’d be curious to hear/see what you rig up!

Deb- feel better! Agree- 90 is brutal!

@abasket

I’m trying to avoid spending this, despite the terrific reviews and adjustability:

I have something set up today, with items I scrounged up from around the house, based on this:

The keyboard is not at the right height yet, but I have an idea (bricks + board) which will require a quick trip to Home Depot. The monitor height feels good though.

Some people suggested a bar stool near the desk, for the option of sitting, if the desk itself is not adustable.

This is all new to me. Since last fall, with a couple new projects, I’m putting in a LOT more hours sitting at my desk.

Bravo for the hot-and-humid half, @MomofWildChild !

On the capri thing–I have trouble finding comfortable shorts that are as long as I’d like. I sew, so I’ve been cutting commercial capris to somewhere above my knees. However, I want my shorts to have at least an 8" inseam (shorter than that, they ride up AND chafe)–and those are surprisingly hard to find.

I ran my 4 miles this morning - I absolutely hate running in the morning, but when it gets hot, 85+, peak temperature is 4 or 5 pm and it usually doesn’t cool off until after dark… so… when I get desperate, I run in the morning when it is still <80. The upside is I feel good all day. It is very strange, almost troubling, how bad I feel when I don’t run. Really crappy, almost hung over, in a fog. A run clears all that up, and an extra hard run is even better. Endorphins are real! Best I have felt in a long time was a couple of weeks ago when I ran a 5k race Saturday and another on Sunday. I have also cut way back on caffeine which has made a huge difference in my life. Great job on the 1/2M! I may try a local one here in December. It would be my first in 37 years!

Midwest- I have the Varidesk and love it, but my work paid for it. At my last job I improvised by stacking up a pile of law books, but it was not a good solution. I really need the adjustability since I can flop it down for meetings in my office. I don’t want it looming in someone’s face. It is a very good product, though.

Dmd- take a look at Happy Puppies shorts. They have a bunch of lengths. They are fitted like capris but not a second skin. They make good stuff and have good pockets. I wear them under my running dresses.

NJRes- I also feel crummy if I don’t run in the morning, which is my main time. I get crabby.

I am really wiped out. I feel more like I ran a marathon than a half. I was in about the top half of the field and top third of all females, which is pretty good for my age. Too bad it felt so bad!

Well, great conversation with Coach this afternoon. In good news, I am not the most pathetic runner she’s ever coached - but I have plenty of room for improvement! One of the things my training log showed was how hard I was working all of the time based on my HR. It’s no wonder I wasn’t seeing any improvement. So, I’m committing to six weeks of low heart rate training. My ego’s already bruised with how slow I am, but it was really a shock to see how high my HR was during exercise. I had no idea.

sabaray- I knew this conversation would go well. Just forget about the pace (except be forewarned that running will take longer!) and get your HR down. You will be surprised how good you will feel once you settle into it. I am familiar with a number of her other athletes, and I can assure you that you are a superstar- especially in terms of willingness to follow instructions and stick with it. My daughter is like that, too. It works.

My daughter has completed her running season, found that she still is a very swift (but nervous) 400 meter runner, and today is doing something that her older sister dropped out of - a local pentathlon. She is feeling so much better these days.

Her legs are forever long, but she has no real skill at hurdling, though if she could find a way to do what MOWC and sabaray speak of and follow instructions, she might find herself placing in things her older Sis never did (which would please her immensely).

On another note, I almost read the caloric and nutritional information on some sushi I was eating today. I realized there was no way it could come in at Bunsen’s 500 calories, though, and thought I’d just guestimate what portion of it might be overkill for me. Gave that portion to the daughter who dropped out of the pentathlon, who tells me she thinks she’s taking in about 3500 calories a day.

Climbed Idad’s favorite mountain today, Mount Monadnock. Went up the north side this time on the Dublin Trail, which was nice - much less crowded than the other side.

1600 vertical feet, average slope is 16% with an extended stretch of 24%. My legs are dead.

Great hike! Makes me miss him, though.

I was keeping an eye out, but didn’t see anyone who looked like him. :-B

Congrats on finishing strong, MOfWC! running in subpar conditions… stinks. Humidity is a killer. Great job!

Sabaray, I might be joining you in doing low HR training after returning home. My hip is not doing too well… I am afraid that the injection did not help to completely get rid of the discomfort. It feels like there is something misaligned there. That is a bummer, but I am determined to fix it.

Bunsen, I am sorry that you haven’t had complete relief. Like you, I am determined to fix myself. We happened to be at Target yesterday and believe it or not, saw a Pilates ring (the magic circle) - so I bought one to use at home when I’m working on my abs. It really helps me with form on the mat exercises.

I thought about it yesterday after talking with Coach - I have worked really hard at Pilates for over a year and have seen just huge improvements in what I’m able to do. At first I felt like I was backtracking, but I was really retraining my body. That’s what I need to do with running. For so long I was just doing what everyone else was doing - now I’m finally listening to my body and retraining. I’m going to quit worrying about pace because there’s no point - I’m running all by myself!

We had absolutely horrendous storms here yesterday - flash flooding, the works! Looks like a break in the humidity is in the forecast though. Today’s project is fixing my Garmin to show me only the most important stats - HR and elapsed time.

A good little article worth reading:

https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/losing-weight-comes-down-overcoming-160000940.html

Weight gain/loss boils down to three main things:

  1. We sit too much
  2. We are very bad at remembering how much we ate and how much we exercised
  3. Out portion sizes are way too big

Common sense? Yes. Are these obstacles easily fixable? They should be… But habits die slowly.
