I bet those treadmill desks are expensive! I would probably flip off the back even at a slow speed. I do love my standing Varidesk, though.
VERY early 2 miles on dreadmill before early flight to Dallas.
About $1500 and up for the better treadmill desks. Downside is that the actual desk space isn’t like a normal full size desk. Alternative is to buy a slimline treadmill designed to got under a normal desk. Downside to that is the desk height is not adjustable in relation to the treadmill. It’s very disturbing that I’ve actually field tested this. It’s bad enough that I’ve done away with my office desk chair in favor of a stability ball.
A bit over 2 miles this morning for a light run day; Pilates session with my trainer which was so hard I didn’t know if I could do it! At this point a great deal of what I’m doing is simply refining technique which adds a whole new dimension of “this is so hard” to each exercise. I do enjoy it though. The running is getting better. PlantMom, count me in as a fellow mollusk - great description! Galloway is a great way to train and you are doing an excellent job with it. Bunsen, I’m sorry your hip is still giving you fits.
I am going to do a few weeks of food tracking; my eating has gotten so off that I just really need to re-focus. @abasket’s ice cream thread didn’t help!
Sunrise yoga and a nice walk up the 11 floors worth of stairs to the office.
It is absolutely gorgeous here today. My main workout this evening will be walking to lawn seats at Wolf Trap for Jackson Browne.
Michael, thanks! I got a lot of fancy pictures of my bones to rule out herniated discs that can manifest as hip/low back pain and other wonderful stuff that comes with age. The radiologists said “unremarkable,” and my doc did not see signs of arthritic changes. There is a weird bump on the hip bone, so that is the next thing that will be looked at, but neither radiology nor my doc thought it was the issue. So I am waiting for my next appointment to discuss the options.
I did take a note of the video you recommended, so that is an option to try. Thanks!!
This is funny. Have been lifting weights and doing strengthening exercises since retirement 3 months ago and more consistantly lately. I looked in the mirror the other day and noticed a mark on my upper arm and it was also on the other arm. I realized it was my muscle demarcation. Who knew I could have that!
Rockymtnhigh, with all that muscle showing, you will have to change your screen name to Rocky soon. Have you thought about boxing?
Jokes aside, congrats.
A miracle cure!!! My Fitbit miraculously fixed the time issue with the latest firmware update. No need to bug the customer service.
So last night I did another rings workout. The last movement in the conditioning exercises had me doing 5x 8-12 reps of pulling up into an inverted hang. It was very windy out, causing me to sway upside down. I made it through 2 sets before I developed motion sickness hanging upside down and almost puked. In terms of strength, the workout was well within my envelop, but the motion sickness - yikes, that really did me in!
This morning I rocked 3 classes! 7-8 am weights, 8-9 fluid running, 9:30 Pilates. Good thing, as I am now stuck in DMV hell. Since our state is in a budget crisis, my local DMV didn’t pay its electric bill, so it’s closed, so I am schlepping 25 min to another location where of course everyone else is schlepping too!
Michael, are you sure you didn’t eat too much DQ before your workout?
Lol
Way to go PG - you’ll sleep good tonight - if the DMV doesn’t give you nightmares!!!
Planted flowers in window boxes all morning and then rode by bike to the gym where I do 45 minutes on the Cybex arc machine. Just got back from a Yin Yoga class with one of my favorite instructors.
What a glorious training ride I did this evening. 27 miles of time trial interval training. Warm-up, 3x 15 minute intervals at 90% max heart rate. Slightly below no more gas in the tank max effort. The whole idea is to train to be able to go 30 minutes at just below your oh my god I’m gonna blow up effort. It’s hard, so very hard but it’s funny, as hard as the physical effort is, it’s the mental fortitude that really counts. Legs burning just below failure, breathing so hard you can’t talk, barely able to string 2 words together in a sentence. All you want to do is slow down to end the anguish, to make it end. But if you don’t, that’s where the real training occurs, in that moment when why you’re doing this crystallizes, and your resolve and mental resilience strengthen and grow to push you past what your body is falsely telling you are its limitations. And then the 15 minutes are up and during the 5 minute recovery you laugh with your training partners as you all complain just how much this sucks. And then you do it again, 2 more times.
I did this tonight with my 2 favorite Sturdy Girls training partners, one of whom recently returned from Nationals. Her average interval speed was 7/10 of a mph faster than mine. That’s why she gets to wear the National Champion Jersey and I don’t, lol.
So for all you competitive runners out there, what running event would you analogize to this? How do you train for it? How do you deal with the challenges?
" Warm-up, 3x 15 minute intervals at 90% max heart rate."
Wow, that sounds brutal. That would be like running 3 x 2 miles at an all out effort for me! I have zero idea how to train for this kind of tirture.
After some Google research, I am not that far off in my guess!

Not for me! ![]()
Michael - I would say any athletic endeavor that gets you above 90% HR for longer than a minute and SHORT recovery would be similar. Running, biking, swimming, rowing, etc. . It’s the short recovery that’s brutal. I don’t laugh and complain— I swear and complain.
Running ladders with short recovery are especially brutal. 400/600/800/1000/1200/1400/1600 ladders with short recovery are especially brutal. The up and down version of this is deadly.
A classic Steve Prefontaine workout - 3 miles of alternating 200 meters, run in 30 seconds, with 200 meters in 40 seconds.
Today was exhausting and I didn’t get to do the extra run before dinner that I wanted to do here in Texas. I went to the gym treadmill at this sort of weird hotel, but I only had time for a mile before I had to leave for dinner and the gym was very stuffy. The treadmill was a pretty nice LifeFitness one, but no TV. The area around this hotel (my choice- I screwed up) is almost unrunnable, and I hardly ever say that. It is pretty busy roads and sidewalks only here and there. I was going to have to drive somewhere (JC Penney campus or Frito Lay campus) to run in the morning, but I really don’t have time. I’m going to head out from here and try to get to some residential area without getting killed. I’m hoping traffic will be less in the early morning. This part of the Dallas area is a concrete mess with traffic everywhere. I am SO glad I don’t live here anymore. Tomorrow night’s hotel will be much better. I’m staying at the Cooper Aerobics Center hotel and will have access to all the facilities and all my old running routes.
I read that quickly and thought you were running with Anderson Cooper!
So here was my day -
7-8 Weights w trainer
8-9 Fluid running
9:30-10:30 Pilates (only one who showed up - so like a private lesson!)
Several hours of dealing with the DMV and emissions testing - plus side is that I got through a good chunk of the book “Hamilton”
4:15-5:15 OrangeTheory
7:30-8:30 Yoga
I hadn’t planned on doing anything after the DMV but I felt sluggish since I had just sat for so long. I took it easy on the yoga, though - didn’t do all the chatarungas and didn’t do crow pose.
I can definitely feel myself getting stronger esp w OrangeTheory, which doesn’t leave me wrung out like it used to. Now if I could just align the diet … That’s harder for me, and I know intellectually I can’t out-exercise a bad diet.
Secured a Fenix 3 HR - the last available at the local REI for Mr.'s upcoming big b-day.
Phew. Then made a stupid stop at the Neiman to return a dress… walked out with weaponry that just happened to go on sale!. B-) I am afraid I will have to check those shoes in if I fly with them… LOL. Planned to go for a jog around the neighborhood, but the skies opened up wide… 45 degrees and pouring. Who said it is summer?
MOfWC, I hear you! I stayed at a hotel like that! Thought there would be some room for running around the business park, but alas, the only runnable road had no sidewalk or meaningful shoulder, and running through the parking lots would have resembled hurdles training, because it would have required jumping over prickly landscaping.
