I buy bottled water for home and have a Tervis at work that I’m constantly refilling. I don’t like tap water so buying the bottles and using the cooler at work has made a big difference in my consumption. Really cold water also helps. I am not drinking as much coffee and juice as I did previously and no diet cola at all!
There is no way I drink 60 ounces of water a day ( and I weigh more than 120). I just drink water when I am thirsty. I also consume coffee and green tea on a daily basis. I just drink tap water, it makes no difference to me.
I watch output to decide on input when it comes to water. I want that clear colored pee.The amount I drink will depend on what I do and how much I sweat,
I’m with Lizardly on this issue. Eyball-o-metric pee colorimetry.
The recommended ingestion of water is 91 oz/day for women and 125 oz for men, 80% from beverages and 20% from foods. Staggering, isn’t it? :). Our muscle tissue is 75% water and our fatty tissue is 10% water. Counterintuitive, perhaps, but explains why a given volume of muscle weighs more than a given volume of fat. For those that are active, the need for fluid replacement is even greater. Post exercise, for every lb that is lost during exercise, it is recommended that 16-24 oz of fluid be ingested.
I bet most people walk around in a partial state of dehydration and aren’t even aware of it. Feel sluggish with low energy? Have muscle fatigue or cramping? Unable to perform at expected levels of activity? Could be insufficient hydration. It’s tough to stay on top of it though. I try to keep bottles and cups of water with reach wherever I am and to be mindful of my hydration needs. For liquids, I stick mostly to water and a cup or 2 of milk each day. Don’t want the calories/caffein/diuretic effects of many other beverages. And diet soda? (Drumroll, here comes my dramatic judgmental pronouncement.) You wouldn’t catch me dead drinking it. Not only do the artificial sweeteners trigger cravings for sugar but the thought of it in my intestinal track triggers my recollection of rebuilding a 1951 Harley Davidson when I was in college. There were a bunch of nuts and bolts frozen together. I put them in a glass of Coke to try to loosen them up. Left them sitting overnight. Next morning, all that was left were unidentifiable globs of metal. Last time I ever drank a soda!

I had a similarly mentally disturbing moment with a bowl of ice cream when I was carrying my first child. Fell asleep and the ice cream melted and frothed in the bowl, and sickened me to look at it when I awoke.
Can barely go near the stuff now.
I drink way too much Diet Coke and I like ice cream. I’m doomed…
I recall trying to get a flu shot at work first thing in the morning and my temp was slightly elevated - the nurse told me most likely dehydration and sent me away with instructions to drink a lot of water and return in two hours. Water did the trick! Temp down, flu shot followed.
C3Baker just gave away her secret to speedy running - I guess I’d better stock up! Take away her diet Coke and ice cream and she becomes a mollusk! I used to drink a lot of diet Mt. Dew until someone on here, I think, mentioned it had formaldehyde in it. No thank you.
My problem is relying on feeling thirsty before I sip some water. And reading the requirements here, well, I just got really thirsty. Thank you D/E/H/W thread for the reminder to stay hydrated!
I’m not a big diet soda drinker so I’m ok there - maybe 1 a month. My H came from a family that drank diet soda like it was going out of style. He would go through a full case of Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi during 24-hour residency shifts. Crazy! He’s down to about 1 a day (if that) which is a huge improvement!
My 2 favorite food groups. Diet Coke and ice cream. I’m with @C3Baker
Been drinking sparkling water lately. Fizzy like Coke, says its water. Win, win.
Good luck this weekend @abasket. What a fun time in your life.
I almost never drink any soda. D is 25 and has never had a soda because the idea of the carbonation turns her off. S on the other hand drinks a lot of diet soda as does H.
D drinks diet Coke like there will never be another can available. I really wish she would cut way, way back.
I do think that artificial sweeteners really trigger a desire for more and more sugar. If I eat or drink something with added sugar in it, it is much easier for me to consume less of it. As much as I like ice cream, it’s a fairly infrequent indulgence now. In college we used to joke you could eat anything you wanted without repercussion so long as you drank a diet soda as your beverage. I have found my diet is far easier to control and far more satisfying when I’m avoiding processed or artificially sweetened foods. There are definitely foods I know aren’t good for me but I’m not going to give them up for the rest of my life - life is meant to be enjoyed!
I don’t find that artificial sweeteners trigger cravings for me - but sweet carbs certainly do for me!
Oh sweet carbs definitely - hard to eat a lot of ice cream, but really, really easy to eat too many donuts!
I bought some doughnut bites today, waiting for my youngest to take a placement test, and was surprised to find myself reading the dietary information. No surprise in what was found there, but until a few weeks ago I’d never read that information on anything.
Trying to do a little better after listening to you guys, though I think the trick has been the body I was born into which has never really looked like it needed to do more to appear healthy. I know that’s all a trick, though.
^^What’s up with our bodies fooling us like that @Waiting2exhale ?!!!
There are certain things that there are no need to read the dietary info on - and donuts would be one of them - what I mean is, don’t expect there to be ANYTHING good in there - I don’t care if it has “fruit” filling or not!!!
My beverage consumption is one cup of coffee 5-6 days per week. An occasional small glass of milk with a sweet. Everything else, water. Water, water, water. Never have been a big liquid drinker though - I’m a sipper not a gulper. Occasionally a cup of tea. Every once in a while, an Arnold Palmer or a Fresca.
Today - weights w trainer, fluid running and yoga. Was going to go for an OrangeTheory and make it 4 and decided the heck with it.
A gallon a day for men?
I don’t believe that number. When I had my colonoscopy I had to drink a gallon of gatorade and it almost did me in. And it annoys me when I read things like “In my experience, most people are not aware of how much they’re drinking and are not drinking enough – many, as little as half of what they need” - if I was only drinking half of what I need I’d be dead in a week.
And if I drink too much at night then I have to get up in the middle of the night to pee, and that wrecks my sleep.
One site I saw said 0.5-1oz of water per pound of body weight. 1oz would put me near two gallons of fluid a day. I’d be in the bathroom every hour, no thanks, if it didn’t make me puke. Although that would get my step count up. ![]()
I drink mostly unsweetened tea and water, some beer here and there, the occasional diet Dr. Pepper.
I like this write-up:
Basically, our thirst mechanism is all you need.
