Weights. Done. Pushups. Done! It is time for a mandatory sleep break.
Going to run 1500 in West Virginia in a couple weeks. Was thinking of running the 800 in the Masters National but I would have still been in the 55-59 age group. Didn’t want to compete against the younger guys. Wimped out.
I don’t run every day, usually every other. On the non run days I practice yoga and try to walk a lot. I admit I am an early riser morning person but both of my kids are night owls and they work out later in the day/evening. It works just fine for them.
Easy 3 miles this morning followed by a Pilates session with my trainer - remind me I never want to take a week off again! Lots of stretching and work on the hip flexors. I have a yoga class tonight. Tomorrow I get to add some strides to my running!
I cannot run in the evening - it is just too hot for me. I like to get out there early and then it’s done!
4.1. Last night on the weather they promised a wind shift to the north with some cooler, drier air, which I was looking forward to. Didn’t happen- at least not yet.
Love your new avatar MOWC - is that your son? Sunrise or sunset???
Last night’s run was terrible! It was 93 degrees and humid and I just struggled. At 2.5 miles I knew I was toast. I debated turning around, but I was only a half mile from the drinking fountain that had been my planned turn-around point. I figured I was better off going the half mile to get water rather than turning around and having to go another 2 miles back to the previous drinking fountain which is pretty close to home. So it ended up being a 6 mile run but there was a lot of walking involved. I am hoping for a better run tonight. It is with the running club so it will be shorter and a slower pace.
I am targeting to retire in 3 1/2 years and I am really looking forward to having the flexibility to be able to run and go to the gym in the morning. I feel so great and energized when I do that, but it just isn’t practical with my current schedule.
deb922 - I hope things are going OK with your sister. Good comment re passwords.

My avatar is my son at sunset the night before his Kona Ironman World Championship race in October 2013. I love that picture and it is a great memory before a couple of years of hell! I always view that picture as capturing his focus and his gratitude at achieving the pinnacle (well, at least earning the slot at Kona) in his sport. He raced with a torn labrum and sports hernia, but he finished and there is really nothing quite like the Kona finish line.
An edible fruit arrangement just showed up in the work area near me and I was invited… Boy, is that a neat thing! It had cold, good fruit and much of it was dipped in chocolate, but not overwhelmingly so. Apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, pineapple… Perfect afternoon snack.
I love those fruit arrangements - they are very, very good. No oranges, MOWC? Those are the best!
Did everyone see this article on best exercise classes for runners? Kind of neat:

I just signed up for a free two week trial to Pilates Anytime. I’m having a difficult time fitting mat classes into my schedule so thought I would take a look at this as an option. I know several of the instructors at the studio use the workouts for “inspiration”. Mr. Sabaray asked for a repeat of the Thai ribs we got from Chefd a few weeks ago, so ordered those for the weekend.
No oranges- I guess it isn’t the right season. I went back for more strawberries!
The Thai ribs sure sound good!
There are a few people in my social group who spend so much time worrying about food and their diets, that it consumes their lives. They get anxious about their meal planning and what they can and can’t eat. I think it really leads to an unhealthy relationship with food. That’s what I thought was a good point about Weight Watchers (if done sensibly)- you could do it in a way that you had a normal relationship with food.
Of course, physical activity is important for overall health, and those who think they are healthy because they “manage” their food are just fooling themselves.
That normal relationship with food is critical - but I can’t imagine trying to lose or maintain weight without exercise. Plus I just feel so much better! It has really helped me a lot with stress and anxiety management.

I also like these guidelines:

I’m sure Michael will tell me if I’m way off base!
sabaray, those guidelines for exercise are spot on! It’s exactly what all the major fitness organizations are recommending too. What sometimes gets tricky is that it’s unclear where resistance training fits in. The guidelines are for aerobic exercise with a further recommendation of 2 days per week of some kind of resistance training. While some may view the total volume as overwhelming, in reality, you can meet these standards with a minimum of 25 minutes of vigorous (breathing is labored based on a talk test) cardio 3 days per week and 30 minutes of focused resistance training 2x per week with a resistance training program that hits all major muscle groups for 2 sets either one exercise at a time or in a circuit. And if you do compound movement exercises, it’s even more efficient.
I’m coming up on a “streak anniversary”. I guess I don’t feel bad about any anxiety over when I’m going to get my run in on any given day. I see people stressing about whether they are going to be home from something in time to watch Real Housewives!
I could improve in the strength training areas. The barre and Pilates classes I take all incorporate body weight exercises, wimpy hand weights and resistance bands, but I’ve just never been a huge fan of “pumping iron”. I’m not sure I’m getting true resistance training with the workouts I’m doing, but I like them, and it’s something. And that beats nothing!
“There are a few people in my social group who spend so much time worrying about food and their diets, that it consumes their lives.”
Amen to that. I have a few of those around me, too. They talk about meticulous food gathering and meal planning so they could eat to lose weight… all the time, and then the cookies brought by a salesperson, client, coworker, etc. mysteriously disappear from the kitchen. I guess the calories do not count when no one is watching.
And my people can’t believe I can run every day or as far as I do. I try to encourage them to do SOMETHING- and when, occasionally, it “takes”, they feel great and have a lot of pride.
I have been waylayed on exercise–had a great session with my trainer on Fri and then took a flight to Philly to help my D and her boyfriend pack for a move to Providence. (She’s starting grad schl). They have movers, but are packing themselves.
All I have managed to do is a 2-mile walk and a yoga class with D. Good news, I have been going beyond my step goal and lifting lots of boxes, so not a complete couch potato. Will make it back in time for my Pilates mat class!!
