Now that’s what I call carbo loading for a race, MOWC!

I think I really don’t like 5Ks- it’s painful from the beginning! This started (hot and humid, but no rain) uphill, which is always a nice touch to be anaerobic in the first 200 yards! Unfortunately, I saw a woman at the starting line who was in my age group (she was a “young” 60) and I was bummed because I thought I might be the only one racing it in my age group. There were about 650 participants- but a lot of walkers. Turns out she was faster than me and got a fair bit ahead by a mile. The course had enough short but steep hills to be truly miserable- and the humidity was brutal. Cloud cover, fortunately. I felt like I was going to die. My competitor stopped for a few short walking breaks (which I wanted to do badly but didn’t) and I got ahead of her by 2 miles. She passed me back. I knew I was racing for $$$ (a gift certificate), but I gave up on catching her. UNTIL- she walked at about 2 3/4 and I made a huge move and blew by her with everything I did NOT have! If she had come back on me, I’m not sure I could have finished the race- I was really shot. Anyway- I beat her by about 8 seconds and won the age group. We commiserated after she crossed and congratulated each other for surviving. I was in the top 25 women overall and got the $25 gift card to Sun & Sea Sports and a mug. My corporate team reached a new low with only 3 of us there. We were 2/2 in Division D and got a plaque. 28:54 for me. That’s all I had in me. Ran 28:08 in April when the CC ladies were in town and I actually think this time isn’t much off that considering weather and course, so I’ll take it. The part I don’t like is how horrible it feels to run that hard. I’m always proud of myself when it’s over and I’ve given it my all, so I guess that’s why I do it! I hit 180 HR at the finish, which is pretty darn close to max for me.

I did NOT wear my corporate team shirt, but I put it on afterwards. Raced in my new Oiselle skirt and the Oiselle Spandos bra that I got asked about all morning. It’s really awesome and is a longer cut bra so looks less bare. I was glad to not be wearing the padded Superman costumes that a few men had on. WHY???

One nice thing- the race benefited a school for autistic kids and you could buy signs to place along the course honoring an autistic family member or friend. They also had signs explaining different things about autism.

Nice job MOWC. Prizes and prize money changes things doesn’t it?!

Congrats, MOfWC! You raced well.

Yay MOWC, great perseverance, particulately in all this heat!

Great job, MOWC! It does sound like a miserable race but I’m glad your competitive spirit pulled you through!

I had a really nice 11 mile run this morning. Everything felt good - it wasn’t that humid here and there was good cloud cover so the conditions were pretty good for this time of year.

Spoke with the nomadic kid this morning. She is swimming some sort of an open water race tomorrow. 3.7 km. She is a good swimmer, but I am still nervous.

Nice job, MOWC as well as C3Baker and BB’s D.

Good job on the race and the suspenseful post, MoWC!

Good luck to your dd, BB. Nice run, C3B.

Hope your hip is okay, MnK!

H and I hit the gym this morning. I ran 10K on the treadmill and did some upper body weights. The A/C felt absolutely wonderful, almost like being in Wisconsin again  Pet peeve: somebody had a young kid at the gym, a girl maybe 10yo. She was fooling around on the weight machines–dropping the weight stacks, sitting backwards and even allowing her arms to be quickly wrenched up when the weights fell. The mom seemed to know her way around but ignored the young girl, probably so she could squeeze in her own workout. Dangerous, imnsho.

Thanks, everyone. I hope I have the energy to do about 7 miles tomorrow. I’m sure not feeling like it right now!

Two yoga classes today–warmed sunrise flow followed by a 2-hour rest and restore workshop. Walked on the beach, because I felt like I had been inside too long today.

Nice race, MOWC.

Plantmom–I get the annoyance with kids fooling around on gym equipment. There are two boys in my regular gym --about 12 or 13–they come in the mornings around 9am. I think they might be home schoolers, because I always see them in the mornings. They are always doing stuff like walking backwards on the threadmill or moving the macines up to the highest hill position and jumping as they run. If they can get machines together, they will yell across someone to continue a conversation. I usually tune them out but I know people have complained0 about them.

Way to go MOWC!

I’m up at 3:00 AM, getting ready for a 6:30 half-marathon that requires a shuttle to the start. I can hear the gentle snores of the rest of my family, happy in their beds. Why do we do this exactly? I’ll have the answer for you later this morning I suspect, but right now it’s elusive.

Have a good race, Gertrude!

Have a great race, Gertrude!

MOWC, once again I am impressed with your grit and tenacity. Really impressive in tough conditions. Nice job.

Yesterday was a total fail for me. Rejoined several friends for a group run that was miserable. It’s a country area and I knew I’d be much slower than the group, so had directions. Missed a key intersection where I was to stay on one road and instead I followed the paved road instead of staying on what looked like someone’s driveway. Evidently that was the road I was to follow. So I ended up doing a miserable out and back by myself on what should have been a fun day. Didn’t follow my coach’s directions, got the worst part of the planned route with terrible hills two times, it just was miserable on a whole bunch of levels, physically and mentally. We will never mention this again. I need a training partner who is interested in training the same way I want to.

I did do a fun Barre class with my D afterwards; intense 45 minutes of exercise followed up with a beer (okay, two beers) to nurse my wounds.

^ you earned the beers, sabaray.

Good luck in the race, gertrude!

Hope you have a great race Gertrude. Getting up at 3:00 a.m., now that’s dedication!

sabaray, it’s no fun to think you are training with a group just to have them drop you. If a commitment has been made for a group training run, everyone should stick together. I would find new training partners. I’ve seen it happen on cycling group rides. It defeats the whole purpose of group training.

Took 2 days off from any training to allow all system resources to focus on healing. I was very cranky yesterday, lol. Today I return the bike. Tomorrow resistance training. I think the biggest discomfort will be the bandages pulling on the areas they cover.

Michael - don’t know how unscientific it is But - whenever my resting HR is in the high 50s (normal is 40s) I feel it is time to take a rest day. That’s why I just swam and took a leisure stroll on my mountain bike around town. It’s one of the reasons I like the Garmin 235. I also like the sleep function. I really notice if I don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep AND at least 2 of those hours are deep sleep.

Going to try the “wimpy” super sprint triathlon in 2 weeks. (That’s what a tri friend calls it.) 300 yd swim/8 mile bike/1.5 mile run. Really think I can win the overall based on last year’s results—If I make it out of the water. I’m hoping water temperature is under 78 degrees so I can wear my neoprene swim shorts, otherwise I’m in trouble.

Ohio, abnormally high resting heart rate is generally a sign of overtraining and a need to dial it back. Of course, in your case, your resting hr elevating from 40s to high 50s could just be a sign that you’ve awakened from a stasis pod :D.

Oh, sabaray. I completely understand how you felt on the “group run”. That is just a terrible feeling. Our running club runs and some of the other group runs here are like that- unintentionally. They welcome all paces, but all paces do not show up! I’ve been completely alone at those runs- even a few years ago when I was faster. My daughter and I did a couple of them and at least we had each other, but the organizers for that week literally had to wait for us to get to the last water/aid stop before they picked it up and went home! It messes with your mind, even when you know you are training the way you are supposed to for your age and ability! I’m glad you got to have the beers!

7.7 miles this morning. I was not feeling like doing it at all. 7.6 was the goal in order for me to hit my 36 mile week (which is really a stupid and arbitrary number that someone I’ve locked onto) and I was willing to settle for a 5 mile run. I did my best to keep it easy and pretty shaded and hit a bunch of water fountains, so I made it!

I had a funny exchange yesterday afternoon with my Korean nail salon guy. I’ve known him for 10 years and he thinks my running is crazy, but he always asks me about it. “You run today?” I told him I ran the race yesterday morning and he asked me if I won. I said, “Yes. I won my age group and I won a $25 gift certifcate to Sun & Ski Sports.” He laughed uproariously and said “What you buy there with that?” (He had a point- it’s not like it will cover a kayak or anything!) I said, “Well, maybe socks or something! Calvin- the point is that I WON!” He said “You run not for gift card but because you love it!” I said “Well, yeah. But I like to win, too!”

Wow, so much has happened while I was asleep.

Kid finished!!! She won. Her medal says Sea Mile. Apparently, 3.7 km is two sea miles whatever that is. I am ecstatic that she is alive and happy.
