That’s great, Bunsen! It sounds like a long way!

It does! I much prefer miles to kilometers. There are fewer of them in any given distance. Apparently, it was a well-organized swim with strict rules, like only crawl stroke was allowed. Very proud of her.

Hope Gertrude had a nice run!

That’s great about your D, BB! Can’t imagine swimming that far.

Walked 5 miles in heat and high humidity this AM. Ugh.

This is incredible! World Record for half marathon pushing a running stroller set today in Chicago by Julia Webb (wife of Alan Webb- former top US miler). 1:22:57.bb http://running.competitor.com/2016/07/rock-n-roll-marathon-series/julia-webb-breaks-half-marathon-stroller-record_153237

My husband used to push ours at a 6 minute pace- but never in a half marathon!

^ Wow!

Something tells me that with her pedigree little Paula Webb is going to grow up to be a runner.

Congratulations to your D BB. That’s quite an accomplishment. Sea swimming is so much more challenging than the pool! I can well understand the trepidation you were feeling.

Rode 30 miles. 95 degree heat and I had no legs from the very beginning. No legs at all. Did a relaxed recovery pace of 15 mph but my hr was often where it would be if I was hammering at race pace. Did I say I had no legs? Just chalking it up to the crash on Thursday and system resources still dedicated to the healing. Still quite a bit swollen on my left hip and butt. Note to self: taking my normal baby aspirin each morning isn’t a great idea while I am healing. I think it has contributed to the hematoma spreading to the size of a watermelon! On the upside, no joint of bone pain whatsoever. I’m pretty confident I lucked out and avoided any fractures. The way I fully pancaked my self at speed on my left hip, I was a bit concerned.

Glad you don’t have anything more serious, Michael. At least you got to ride, although it doesn’t sound pleasant!

LOL, Michael, it was not a sea, just a huge lake in a landlocked country. I thought it was just a bunch of yahoos who got together and swam for the heck of it, so I was nervous that if something happened, there would be trouble. Apparently, it was a very well organized race. The organizers named it Sea Mile because a nautical mile is 1,852 meters. So there were 3 distances: 200 meters, a nautical mile, and 2 nautical miles.

OUCH about that hematoma!!!

I too am glad you got to ride!

My “workout buddy” (who is 20 years younger than me, just so we can set expectations here when she kicks my butt) ran the Rock & Roll Chicago Half Marathon in 2:12! She was quite happy.

Back from the HM - this was the very first running of the “Craft Classic” (as in craft beer) so I was expecting some glitches. The biggest one? Having to be in line for the shuttle by 5:00, for a 6:30 start. We got to the start line at 5:15. There was no entertainment or anywhere to sit. I realized an hour in to the race that I had eaten breakfast 4 hours ago & I was starving & having low blood sugar. There was no food along the course, so I made do with gels & shot blocks. But all that said, it was actually a pleasant race. The beer at the finish was awesome - I wasn’t convince by everyone who told me it would taste amazing, but it sure did - ice cold & fizzy. People seemed more interested in hanging around after the race with tasty beer to drink.

Congratulations on getting through it! Hopefully they will fix some of the logistics and keep the great beer!

Michael, I hope your run of bad luck with falls and whatnot ends now. You deserve a healthy spell.

Congrats to BB’s kiddo and to Gertrude and MoWC for their races!

A wimpy triathlon is just my speed. I could do all those distances.

Back from the beach. Biked for an hour or so this morning, before the heat/humidity became too oppressive. Gained only a pound to a 1 1/2 pounds from this vacation, which isn’t too bad.

Diet and weight loss is a topic that is surrounded by a load of misconceptions, pseudo-science, science with an agenda, fads and hucksters both within and outside the scientific community looking to make a buck. It’s also a topic that engenders cult like adherence to fads and extreme diet programs.

I have always been of the view that at the end of the day, it really is all about energy balance, deficits and surpluses. In other words, calories in vs calories out. That when you are talking solely about weight loss, gain or maintenance, ratios of macronutrients don’t really matter. That while ratios of macronutrients and the nutritional qualities of foods matter from a health perspective, calories in vs calories out is the fundamental over-riding principle of weight loss barring medical conditions that impact directly on weight.

One of the biggest offenders in the arena of pseudo science is the eschewing of carbohydrates and the promotion of low carbohydrate diets based on claimed insulin responses. After reading countless articles, studies and pursuing nutritional certifications, that is my conclusion. Rather than attempt to spell out all the reasons in what would undoubtedly turn into an unmanageably long discussion board post, I invite anyone who is interested to read the following article. Read the references that are cited. Then make up your own mind.

As usual, when you leave this place for a few days you come back, read, and feel totally unworthy!

Congrats to all the racers and exercisers this weekend - loved reading your 5K race story MOWC - your competitor must have wore herself out not to be able to complete the last .25 miles or so without walking!

BB I would have been nervous about that swim as well - something about open water that seems a little too unstructured!

I was at the beach this weekend and NOT overexercising! Did do lots of beach walking and got in a nice run Sunday morning - still was able to average about 15,000 steps a day - pretty good for an intended “lounging” weekend! My eating choices were a little subpar (though delicious - looking at you fried fish!) but I did keep my quantities in check. It was just a beautiful weekend. Back to work, yogurt and disciplined eating this week - until Friday when we hit the road for a long weekend in the Chicago area.

As far as eating and food choices, I think one of the big culprits is the “permission” binges. In our lives, there are SO many excuses to fall off the healthy eating wagon. Oh look, it’s a birthday, anniversary, a kid is home, a kid is leaving home, it’s vacation, it’s Friday, it’s my book club night, it’s 4th of July, it’s a special lunch with a friend…on and on. I certainly give myself more latitude than I should (and are not nearly as consistent as most of you on this thread), but I think it’s important to not go full-binge mode on all these occasions. Otherwise, the occasions take over the eating plan and it’s all a complete bust.

The weekends never seem to last long enough do they? Yesterday’s excitement occurred when I was cleaning the outdoor furniture in preparation for a cookout we hosted last night, I found a bees nest. I reached under a side table to clean it and ended up with two bee stings on my right hand and five on the left. OUCH! It hurt like heck and my left hand was really swollen but fortunately no ER trip needed. I was stung a number of years ago and immediately broke into hives and then had difficulty breathing and had to go to the ER - for years afterwards I carried an Epi pen but it expired long ago and I never got it refilled. So I was pretty relieved that I didn’t have any breathing issues yesterday - it was probably a different type of bee than my previous episode.

So in spite of all that excitement, it was a pretty good day and it was a fun cookout with the group that we will be doing the RAGNAR race with in September. We agreed on which legs we will all be running. I’ll be doing a total of 24.7 miles in the 3 legs I will run. I’ve got a couple major hills on my route so I need to kick my training up a notch! We’re doing this as a fundraiser for Back on My Feet and have some ambitious goals so I need to get more serious about the fundraising, although I hate asking for money!

Gertrude - great job with your half marathon! I’m glad you enjoyed the beer at the end. Hopefully they will fix those logistics issues, I sure would hate standing around for that long before the start of a race.

BB - great job on your daughter’s swim! I can’t even imagine swimming that distance!

sabaray - I’m sorry about your training run. That must have been so discouraging.

As long as we don’t have any more thunderstorms, I’m planning on a 5 mile run tonight. My hand is still pretty swollen and I’m kind of dragging today. Hopefully I’ll perk up more as the day goes on.

The biggest problem with “permission binges” is that very often all sense of quantitative and caloric limits goes out the window and the excesses far outstrip the measured, mindful eating for the week. If you’re going to give yourself an “off” or meal, plan in advance what your limits will be for that occasion and integrate it into your meal planning for the entire week. Off days, meals etc can be manageable if you don’t simply run amok but instead are as mindful about it as you would be with the rest of your nutrition.

Sabaray, I forgot to comment on your “off” run - and running “off” the path - I would have been very discouraged and that alone would have affected my run. I think it’s a selective process to find the right people/person to train with. You know that better times will happen!

Also of interest on the eating discussion and “permission binges” is how these are measured person to person. Clearly one donut is better than three and none would be the best…but everyone’s definition of “binging” is different.

Is an “off meal” a large platter of fried fish and french fries? Or is an “off meal” a large piece of fried fish and a side salad? Just as I “bargain” with myself to have a splurge I find that I bargain for that splurge - "ok abasket, you’re going to order that fish tonight - so your afternoon snack (weekends tend to include just a large breakfast and dinner and an afternoon snack) must be very limited in fat/carbs and be heavy in veggies/protein/a little fruit. This weekend that meant afternoon snack was a pile of raw snap peas, sharp cheese and a small handful of cherries. Then, I enjoyed the fish with lots of lemon, a little homemade tartar sauce, some salad and a half a dozen fries from my daughter’s meal. Fully satisfied!

My kid is really happy. I cannot imagine swimming for an hour and four minutes - in a lake! She was first in the women’s division and in the top 15 (I think) overall in that race. That was her first open water distance swim.

My fancy hip pictures will be happening this week. There was a scheduling error at the facility, so when I showed up last week, they could not find me. Ugh.

Just to clarify, BB, I “liked” your kid getting first in the women’s division of her race. I wasn’t “liking” the scheduling error on your hip pictures.
