Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Another very interesting science based article on insulin, carbohydrates and weight/fat storage.

Michael - would think thank could be a future body art tattoo for you if it was that artistic. Make sure you get the photos for your tattoo artist.

I got first in my 55-59 age group today in the 400 (65 seconds) and 200 (29 seconds) at the Masters Track Meet today. Hot one today. Wasn’t in the mood for an 800 or 1500.

Good job, Ohio. Michael- it sounds awful, really. I hope you can succeed at giving it some rest so the swelling calms down. I’m glad it’s not worse, though.

9 very hot, humid miles. I was trying for 8, but decided (not at the end- sort of in the middle) to go for 9. The last couple of miles were really tough. I was drenched with sweat. I had to stop a couple of times just to rest for a minute in the last couple miles. I didn’t look at my splits, and was trying to go slow and keep HR down, but my overall pace was faster than I wanted and my HR was higher than I wanted. It’s very hard to do lower HR (and I wasn’t doing MAF) in hot, humid weather. So- at least that’s done for the weekend.

Congrats Ohio! And I have the pictures, but every time I want to show them to someone, they run away!

Chickened out of the outside run today and went to the gym for a 7 mile treadmill run instead. Kudos to all of you who braved the heat.

I’ll blame one of my kids for encouraging me to play Pokeman Go to see what it’s all about. Sure, you can walk a lot, but it’s like walking with blinders on. I felt like a zombie! And getting my HR up, forget about it. I can’t believe how many people–grown adults–were playing this game. It’ll come off of my phone, but I have to think there’s an opportunity to create one of these mobile VR apps with a fitness theme, .

DH and I had a long (for me, not for him) bike ride (42 miles of relatively flat trail) planned for today. I vacillated: short sleeve vs. sleeveless. Went with sleeveless and was actually shivering during our lunch break. It has warmed up now (6 PM)–all the way to 75–but here in western Oregon the weather has been downright cool for weeks now. It stayed below 70 until after 3! The weather is supposed to be warmer next week, though. We did have a nice ride, although I pushed a bit harder than I should have on the return to the car and ended up feeling pretty drained. We have a wine country group ride next weekend–us and about 300 people we don’t know, sponsored by a group of wineries–45 miles (or 52 if you throw in the extra hilly section, which I won’t and DH will), sag support, 7 wineries, lunch, and dinner, all for $59. We did it last year and the food was great, and the ride was fun.

I can’t even fathom that weather in the summer- although I’ll have it next month in Colorado! Sounds like you had a good day, dmd!

Plantmom- How are you doing with your bike?

So my kids’ 24th birthday is coming up, so H and I were looking for inspiration for a fun experience (as opposed to a gift). Here’s what we came up with – just opened in our area! https://goape.com/Adventures/Treetop-Adventure

But what’s more exciting is that we’re going to do it all together :-). Shhh, don’t tell them! It makes me glad that I’m working out, because it would be a shame to sit on the sidelines!

That looks fun! I would be petrified, though!

I am scared of heights - but for some reason, I would try a zip line. I actually love to try it. PG, let us know how that is!

I’m actually in PG territory I guess- spending the weekend with friends outside of Chicago where as many places it is hot, hot, hot and inhumanely humid. Yesterday we took the train into the city and did 20,000 steps worth of walking. Thank goodness for a bit of lake breeze. The walking helped to guard off the calories of the Portillo’s Chicago dog and chopped salad.

Got out this morning for a short run - didn’t bring good running shoes but made the tennis shoes I had make do. Hoping the storms are a smaller threat today for our outdoor planned activities.

It is miserable here, that’s for sure! I am not a summer person at all. I can’t wait for fall.

The Portillos started with a modest hot dog stand and built it into an empire. The owner’s home is actually within walking distance of my house – it’s an oversized monstrosity IMO, way overbuilt. Hot dogs have been very, very good to them, that’s for sure! I actually don’t think I’ve ever been to a Portillo’s in my life and despite the stereotype, I don’t really know anyone who GAS if you put ketchup on a hot dog!

We’ve done Portillo’s a few times when we’ve been downtown - the chopped salad is my usual but decided I “must” try a hot dog once - so, did it “through the garden” - Portillo’s lingo for lots of fresh tomato, onions, dill pickle, sport peppers!

You should try the chopped salad though!

My friend that I’m visiting is the one who inspired me to start running. Though I haven’t met MOWC in person, the online vibe I get is that she is very much like my friend! She has done several marathons though she claims, always a back of the pack kind of girl. She was sharing some of her adventures at the Marine Corp marathon last fall in DC. She was glad she did it once, but wasn’t sure she’d be on board again - just because she feared being forced to take the “bus at the 20 mile bridge” - she said they race doesn’t (or didn’t last year) corral runners so it was important to take off right away because that is when the official timing started - for everyone. She talked about the “blue mile” being very touching and really putting our successes and what we think of as health and fitness struggles, in perspective.

I’ve never had Portillo’s. Pizzagirl- was it there when I lived there in the mid-70s? I always put ketchup on hotdogs, though! I’m not a huge hotdog fan- except at ballgames and places like that!

37 mile week after a 3.4 mile run this morning. My son is in Quebec scoping out the Mont Tremblanc Ironman course for his race later in August. He and a friend ran 20 miles at a 7:36 pace this morning, according to Strava. They did the 112 mile bike course yesterday and swam the 2.4 the day before.

I have a friend from another online forum who posted that she and her husband want to get a treadmill and have a budget of about $1000. These are folks who will NOT use this thing for very long- I can pretty much guarantee that! She has transitioned from running to walking, which is fine. They live in a university town in IL and have access to a good gym with an indoor track, and she has a good rower at her house. Space in the home is limited. The H is a smoker and has committed to walking a half marathon with her, but there is no way he is going to enjoy walking on a treadmill in his house. I don’t get it. She enjoys walking outside, so except for having the flexibility of exercising while her young child is home, I’m pretty sure this is not a good idea. I’m keeping my mouth shut.

I put ketchup on my hotdog when German-style mustard is not available. Can’t stand the yellow one and that disgusting pickle relish. It is not like I GAS about ketchup - it simply keeps the onions glued to the dog. I only eat hotdogs out of necessity.

Spent 3 hours at the mall yesterday hitting clearance sales with my niece. Thank goodness that mall has nice outdoor spaces, or I would have gone insane. There were a lot of Pokemon catchers by the TMobile store; there seemed to be an abundance of species to catch in that specific spot for some reason. 3 hours shopping = 8,000 steps. Shopping is hard!!

When do you get more word on your hip, Bunsen?

Oh boy… I heard from the docs right away. No arthritis, no tissue damage in the hip joint, and everything is structurally sound. So! That is the good news. The bad news is that I will have to undergo some stuff for my SI joint. Because the pain manifests like a typical hip issue, and hips are the usual suspects in women of a certain age, and because the bones looked wonky on the xray, my doc wanted to rule out any underlying hip issues. The SI stuff is much more complicated than the hip stuff I just had. So yeah. Lucky me. In any case, I am grounded from running for now.

I have been researching the issue of how birth control pills ( I was put on them recently) could cause loosening of the joints. Although the connection is not very cut and dried, there seems to be some evidence that hormonal fluctuations during cycles affect joints (as the article you posted a while ago stated). Adding extra hormones may accelerate that process. Of course, try to get funding for that research, so no one is really looking further. I find it curious that my pain is cyclical, and that it just happened that I began taking the pills a year or so before it began.

Hi everyone. After a good run on Wednesday morning I have not felt well since Wednesday night. I thought at first that it was allergies, but it is a cold at least and maybe more. I am rarely sick so I have no patience with this. Went for a short (2 mile) walk this AM before the temps and humidity got nasty just because I felt I needed to move.

Yes, there seems to be some sort of a nasty cold going around. The folks in the office have been sneezing and coughing, and it looks like I might be the next on the list. :frowning:

Hang in there, FallGirl.

Sorry about the cold, FallGirl! I hate summer colds even more than winter colds! They seem so random!

Bunsen- that is really unfortunate. I hope they get to the bottom of your problem soon. I know from experience how difficult SI joint stuff can be.

Thanks, MOfWC. That is a difficult joint, for sure, and some do not even recognize it as a true joint. Glad that my doc is very meticulous, checks everything carefully, and believes that there is such a joint that can create pain in the rear.
