Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Interesting that my running stride is pretty average, but I have to wear pencil skirts to keep my walking stride shorter, lol. When Mr. and I go for a walk, we end up with a pretty similar number of steps, but my distance is consistently lower than his even though we walked together on a point to point route with no curves.

I don’t really care- I just need to build in a little more than my rough estimate of 2000 steps per mile. I put it on my right (dominant) arm to run, but I would think that would create MORE steps. Maybe I hold my arms pretty still when I run?

I have thought about that - my arms are not wild but have fair movement when I run.

MOfWC, as a distance runner, you probably do hold your arms relatively still to conserve energy. In the beginning of this ordeal, I had a couple of sessions with a PT who was trying to make me do a Running Man exercise, and I could not do it! PT was puzzled because I told him I was a runner! Then I showed him how I ran… He noted that my arms were not moving much!

This morning I am feeling a little bit smug, a lot achy (especially around the knees), and more than a little proud of myself. I did the last race of my trail series last night (4.5 miles, 986 feet of elevation gain) and was ten seconds/mile faster than week 1, which seems like a big deal to me (same average heart rate, too). I was never DFL, was first (last, only) in my age group, got much better at trail running, and learned about a whole group of very accessible Forest Park trails. I managed to run fast enough to not be passed by a 40-year-old on the last downhill stretch (she was a second behind me at the end). And I enjoyed myself.

Congratulations dmd! That is a really impressive accomplishment to take that much time off your pace. And wow, that’s a lot of elevation gain! It sounds as if this trail series was a really great event. You should be very proud and very smug!

Sorry your DH stole your raffle prize!

DMD - Move on up! You should have kept the acupuncture for yourself! I always go for an “energy flow” tune-up before every major race.

I’ve been hanging around, reading about everyone’s trials and accomplishments.

I’ve been trying to run or walk everyday. And playing lots of golf. Too much of it in a cart because I’ve been playing in events where you have to ride. But having so much fun. Every year, H says he’s going to bike more and play less golf. But ends up biking less and golfing a ton. It’s so easy and fun. And very social, people ask you to play and it’s hard to say no.

My weight is up a couple of pounds, trying to work on that but not feeling very motivated. I have to get serious, maybe I will. Lol!

Anyways, I have a question for those of you who take private lessons or even Michael who I know is a private trainer. I get that we are at fault and I’m ok with what happened and will not make a fuss now. H wanted to take a golf lesson and so he signed us up for a group lesson. On the golf course website which seemed very up to date (but might not have been), it said that a 1/2 hour lesson was $40 and an hour was $70. My H said that there was only one pro there so no different prices for different pros. We had an hour lesson and were charged $105.

My H did not ask beforehand how much the lesson would cost. I probably would have asked but H does not do that. I told H that we could have signed up for 2, one-half hour lessons and saved $25. He worked with us individually because we are at different levels so I didn’t think we each got an hours instruction. We’ve done this before but not at this place but the pricing was that we didn’t pay $25 more than 2 individual half hour lessons.

When you sign up for a private trainer, do you ask how much before? Do you find that the website is up to date? My H was pretty surprised at the cost but said nothing and even gave the pro a $20 tip.

It’s hard in our area to even find a teaching pro but I was a bit annoyed. Maybe the pricing on the website was old and really off.

dmd- great job on the race and on the whole series! That’s a real accomplishment!

Deb- If the price was on the website, they should honor it. I would politely ask that they honor that price, since that is what you went by and nothing was ever said to you about it being different! I work for a large retail company, and sometimes we have mistakes on our website that might be a very different price from in our store, and we always honor it. (well, sometimes we honor it after the customer calls and raises Heck, but that’s not supposed to happen)

Coach suggested I read an article about running slowly and technique - not coincidentally after viewing my videos - and one of the things mentioned is arms! Some of you might find this interesting, but I was definitely thinking about all of the things discussed this morning as I ran.

Great article, Sabaray!!!

That is good. I think I do a lot wrong!

Lol, MOfWC, you are not alone. I would definitely try to run in slo mo instead of trotting.

FallGirl, so sorry about your malady. Get that lung scan so you know for sure what the right treatment plan should be!

Bunsen, keep us all posted on how things progress. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

dmd, way to go, great race results! Sounds like the climbing was murderous!!

C3Baker - welcome to my world, lol. It seems that every vendor we spoke to for my daughter’s upcoming October wedding wanted a multiple of $10,000 for their services (tip not always included #-o ).

Tomorrow I start a vacation until August 15. Going to Bethany Beach Delaware with my kids, their spouses and spouses to be and our granddaughter. Should be a blast. I am looking so forward to sleeping, working out twice a day, sleeping, laying on the beach, sleeping, reading my nutrition certification materials, sleeping, and did I mention sleeping?? B-)

Well, Michael! Have fun- and check in between naps!

Oh FallGirl, hope your lung clears. That sounds awful.

BB, so glad you’re test is done.

Good job Sabaray! You will not be DFL by a long shot!

Congrats, dmd!

Have a great time, Michael!

I walked this morning, and ran 4.5 on the treadmill with 3:1 fast:slow running intervals. I’ve been listening to Shoe Dog. I’m really enjoying it, and find it a miracle that Nike ever made it with all the cobbled financing. Only in today’s section did Knight finally start using the “Nike” name. I’ve been willing him to ditch the Tigers for the last 4 discs, knowing what Nike will become, lol.

Happy napping, Michael! Whenever Bethany Beach is mentioned, the stupid covenants case involving booze sales always comes to my mind. Have a few drinks while you are there!

I hate to jinx it, but I think this shot is doing something more than just being a pain in the butt…

Hopefully something good!

I hope, too! Still grounded for a couple of weeks. I think I will be smart and do not try any heroics as the doc said. Fingers crossed.
