Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I had a good 3.3 mile run with Back on My Feet this morning. I’m planning to do a RAGNAR simulation this weekend by running all my legs to see if I’m OK with the distance. I won’t be able to get as many hills in as I’ll encounter in the actual race and I definitely don’t plan to get up and run in the middle of the night for a truly accurate simulation!

BB - your vacation sounds terrific. I would be very tempted to bring that calico kitty back home in my carry-on!

Bromfield - my goodness, you are quite a good sport to help move that extra furniture to your daughter after the terrible fall and injury you had helping her move a couple weeks ago! And carrying it up all those stairs - WOW!

abasket - your race last night sounded pretty cool! I’m glad your son ran it with you. It sounded like a pretty fun community experience.

MOWC - You ran a marathon at midnight? Yikes! That is impressive!

A friend whom I haven’t seen in a while texted me and asked if I wanted to get together. So we are doing Cyclebar (appears to be like a SoulCycle, but a smaller chain that just opened in my area) next week and Shred415 (which is like an OrangeTheory) tomorrow.

C3Baker - That thought actually crossed my mind, but Mr. looked at me and said “Do not even think about!” before I could open my mouth.

@Pizzagirl, let me know what you think of CycleBar after you go. It is very much different than SoulCycle. They toute themselves as a “concierge” level upscale cycling studio. While both CycleBar and SoulCycle are big on “mind-body” connections, CycleBar is much more posh, hi-tech and can be more performance metric/competition oriented. Kind of like Flywheel on glitziness and flashiness steroids. Also, CycleBar uses Schwinn AC (Authentic Cycling) Performance Plus bikes with magnetic resistence while SoulCycle uses some cosmetically branded bike with friction pad resistence. The Schwinn bikes have a much more realistic and consistent resistence curve (it’s the bike I have in my studio). I’d be very interested in hearing your impressions.

^^^ Wow, sounds like you better wear your posh workout wear PG! Hope it’s fun - take notes for us!

I will. I’ve only done SoulCycle once, so i don’t have a huge base of comparison. Here in Chicago, SoulCycle has only city locations whereas CycleBar has suburban locations and just opened near me (hence my friend’s suggestion to try it). I got a 3 for $29 special which I thought was decent for trial.

Abasket - I usually wear the Nike DriFit since I like the drawstring at the waist. I do not have BB’s designer workout wear

Good article on dynamic warming up for runners:

8.5 miles this morning - started with MAF running, then intervals of 5 minutes fast, 5 minutes not so fast. Glad to have it done but it felt easy and it was a pleasant morning for a run. Only 63 and 100% humidity! HR wasn’t exactly at MAF, but it also wasn’t skyrocketing.

Watched the Olympics last night - so thrilling to see the US women win the 4 x 100 after everything they’d been through. Usain Bolt - he is in a league of his own.

I am so nervous, my husband just started the Pikes Peak Ascent. Will there be thunderstorms? Turned around at the tree line? Altitude sickeness? He has trained hard and will probably do very well. I am so jealous of his fitness, but then again, I get to wait at the top and eat donuts. I would love to do this next year, but I have to sign up for that first baby 5K, just do it!

The 87 year old running this is truly inspiring. May we all be like this at 87! Or 77. 67. 57. Now!
Gonna lose coverage soon, wish me luck to not throw up from altitude and nervousness! Oh, it’s so hard being a spectator.

Did a leg routine last night. DB squats, deadlifts and DB walking lunges. Cut back on the weight a bit on the squats so that I could really focus on form. Doing squats holding Dumbbells at shoulder height is such a great whole body exercise. I could really feel the core engagement to stabilize my torso and maintain form as I pushed through my heels to rise from the squat. My shoulders and upper back muscles were fully engaged to stabilize the Dumbbells at a shoulder height position. Really great functional exercise that blasted my hamstrings, glutes, quads, abs, upper back and shoulders. And with a full range of motion on the descent, I could feel my hip mobility really open up. Finished off with a bunch of planks, on a stability ball, rotating into oblique planks and on the TRX morphing into pikes and oblique knee tucks.

On another note, even with the slightly cooler weather this week, hydration is still a critical concern. Thursday mid-afternoon, I did a 2 plus hour bike ride. Yesterday morning, when I got weighed, I had lost 3 lbs from when I weighed myself last Friday. Spent the day really trying to hydrate. Weighed myself this morning and had gained back the 3 lbs. That’s a 2% weight swing apparently due to dehydration. 2% is significant. It happened so easily even without what I would consider to be a particularly strenuous cycling workout. If hadn’t weighed myself to measure hydration swings, I could have ended up with debilitating dehydration.

busdriver11, what an endeavor and accomplishment for your husband! Save a donut for him, he will need it :D. Good luck on your training for that 5K. I’m sure you’ll do just fine.

Good job, sabaray.
Busdriver- Good luck to your husband and to YOU! I know how you feel. I am a wreck already about my son’s big race in Quebec tomorrow. So much can go wrong. As I just said to someone, “Of course I want him to do well, but I also want him to live!” A lot can go wrong in an Ironman.

I managed 8.1 miles here in the mountains. Lots of breaks! It was mainly on gravel path with some rocks, mbut not bad. Some pavement. Some hills but no bad climbs. It was sunny and 41 to start. Gorgeous. It’s just really hard and I swear if I even look uphill my heart rate soars! Last 2 miles were on a dirt road through a cow pasture- with some of the cows in the road with me. I said hi!

Busdriver, report back to us on how your husband’s adventure goes! Wow!

Enjoy the donuts and we will cheer you on for that first 5K! Many of us got our best cheering and coaching for that first race right here on this thread!!! If I did it, YOU can do it!

MOWC - when-where did they hold the Olympic triathlon trials. Did your son compete?

Did an outdoor workout. 3 sets elevated leg push-ups, 5 sets dips on rings, 3 sets pullups, 3 sets chin ups, 3 sets hanging leg raises, 5 reps parallettes L-Sit/Mountain Climber/Oblique Planks combos, 3 sets plyo box jumps and then did 2 circuits of monkey bars, cargo net climb, arm only ladder climbs and a minute of battle ropes. Finished off with 1/2 mile of push pull sled. It was so nice to be outside. Perfect temp in low 80’s, blue skies and sunshine.

Good job, Michael!
Ohio- No, he’s not a pro and he’s better at the longer tris. He’s a top amateur. He has a day job, thank God!
It is incredibly gorgeous here today. Bright blue sky and 66 degrees now. My husband came back yesterday with some scrapes and bruises from mountain biking- and they are back at it today. I’m drinking a milkshake by the mountain stream.

“As I just said to someone, “Of course I want him to do well, but I also want him to live!” A lot can go wrong in an Ironman”

Yes, that would be very scary! Particularly the swimming portion. Good luck to your son tomorrow!

All went fine on the race, even with predictions of 2-4 inches of snow and thunderstorms at the top, the weather was perfect. My husband was hoping to beat his time from 33 years ago, so he was a little disappointed, but he did well, top 10% overall. I was a little worried when I first saw him, limping like crazy, but it’s an interesting race. Even the #1 guy was walking and stumbling at the top, he even stopped for a second. The altitude and the trail is tough. But it’s done, with no injury to speak of!

Oh my goodness, bus! So glad he is back in one piece.

MOfWC, good luck to your son (and his parents!). Fingers crossed for nothing more than a few sore muscles. Big time knocking on wood.

Accolades to your husband busdriver11, top 10% is great!

MOWC, we always worry about our kids in competitions - and then they prove us to be just that - worriers! With his training and experience, he’ll be fine :).
