Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Note to self. Doing a ton of yard work that required lugging a very heavy extension ladder and climbing on the roof of the house to trim back with an electric trimmer extremely tall bushes hitting the siding, lugging the ladder to climb 12 feet up to spray Rustleum on the mounts for my rings, and cleaning up afterwards counts as a workout. Either that or I’m a wuss. Didn’t plan on a double today!

Busdriver- great job by your husband! That’s a really hard race.

Well this funky knee is at it again and I’m back to the brace. TRX, core, strength and 1/2 hour swimming. Happens every time I do the.downhill trails.

Ohio, have you ever had a podiatrist with a strong sports practice do any gait testing on you? Do you think it could be something in addition to just the force of impact on the down hills? When you look at the kinetic chain in running, there’s so many ways your ankles and hips could impact on your knees and with the added stresses of downhill, maybe something that normally doesn’t manifest crosses that threshold?

Thanks for the nice words for my husband, will pass them on. I think what made it particularly tough for him, was having a slow qualifying time, which put him over halfway back. He had to pass 800-900 runners, mostly on the trail, sometimes running on the hill to get around them. I didn’t realize how wave starts like that can make such a difference.

Busdriver good for you for running your first 5 k.

Wow, passing 800 runners on a gravel trail is a lot! And weaving around other runners does make the distance longer.

Uh oh, FallGirl, I have not run the 5K yet. So no congrats there! Have done a half marathon, though. Just trying to start working harder, and keep up with this thread. Problem is, there are usually 1-2K unread posts every time I come back, it’s overwhelming.

Lol, busdriver, I know what you mean. Go on vacation and miss a week on this this thread and you’re almost hopelessly behind! There is always so much to talk about and so much sharing of knowledge, experience, news and support.

Yes, MichaelNKat, I feel like I’ve lost so much information, and so much of what people have done, that it’s hopelessly impossible to keep up! Maybe I’ll try really hard to check every day.

If you’ve run a half marathon but not a 5K, you get major congrats from me (who will never get to 10K level, much less half marathon!).

@busdriver11, with regard to information that you’ve missed, don’t hesitate to raise any subjects or questions of interest to you. Even if it was discussed before, no one will mind revisiting it and there’s probably new or additional info that someone will offer. As to things people are doing, if you miss one event or activity, just wait 15 seconds; with this group there’s always something going on that gets shared :).

Michael- I have had a number of gait analysis done. I think mechanically I’m ok. Always room for improvement though. I really do think the cause of the past knee problems is downhill trail running. The downhills in the national park are pretty severe. I think going fast downhill jams the knee pretty hard and the result is swelling and a knee that is not easy to run on. Like most runners I don’t give it time to heal. I haven’t had a cortisone shot in 3 years but I might go in if I don’t see some improvement.

That’s nice. MichaelNKat, I am afraid I’m going to ask the same questions I asked four months ago, kind of embarrassing. But you guys are really nice n this thread, and don’t make people feel like the idiots some of us are…age related memory loss, I’m sure. Made better by exercise!!

Men’s marathon tomorrow - Go Meb!! I will miss it unfortunately, while running a race, but can’t wait to see how Meb does.

@busdriver11 , sometimes I think there is some satisfaction even in answering the same questions over and over. We have all been at some of the same points at one time or another - a first race, wanting to try a new exercise option, nursing an injury, getting in a rut, celebrating a success - no matter, we love to talk about it!

We appreciate that, abasket!

“That’s nice. MichaelNKat, I am afraid I’m going to ask the same questions I asked four months ago, kind of embarrassing.”

Bus, someone great (the name escapes me at the moment… must be that memory thing going on, lol) said that repetition is the mother of learning. It is always OK to ask the same question!!

Hope your race goes well for you, Gertrude! Go WildChild! And…

GO MEB!

Just turning the Olympics on now…looks like they are still running? They just said that “there is clearly something wrong with Meb”??? :frowning:

I need to start a race of my own this week - a race to some better eating. Though I can usually control quantity I have have had WAY too much in the way of frequent treats. Desserts, donuts (my brother and his family spend the night here last night on their way back from northern Michigan back to NYC and brought me 6 amazing donuts from their favorite bakery - 6!) , grilled sausages, etc. - I need to have a week of beet greens, salad and lots of water!!!
