Ohio, when you are looking for that new bike, keep in mind that there’s a big difference in the specs for a tri bike snd time trial bike. In case you are not aware, while both are aero, sanctioned time trial rules have strict frame geometry requirements and tri bikes don’t meet them. In Tri’s, you can ride any race worthy bike. So if you ever think you may want to race sanctioned time trials, a time trial bike can be used in a Tri but not vice-versa.
Hugs, MOfWC.
I hope your S hung out at the race a bit so someone could keep an eye on him. Tough to worry, even tougher to worry from afar.
Great job on the race Gertrude! Sounds like you killed your predicted time!
I hope WildChild is getting thoroughly checked out. What a bummer but hoping he’s okay.
Congrats, @GertrudeMcFuzz ! Remember, heat makes you 5-10% slower… So being only 15 seconds off your PR is awesome!!!
Bet you can relate to some of these:

Bunsen - those are great & pretty much right on the mark!!
Bunsen, I love it! Lol.
So much to catch up on! You’re not alone, busdriver. Congratulations to your husband.
MoWC, you had to be worried sick about your son’s faint. I hope he’s recovered now and not beating himself up about not finishing. What a great effort.
Yay for your half finish, Gertrude! So happy you made it through the heat at such a pace.
I’ve spent the last few days with my son who’s just left for his senior year. Boohoo, I’m missing him already and feeling a bit sad that this might have been the last time I’ve had one of my kids home for summer as a “kid”. Well, college kid at least
I love the empty nest, and hope he’ll graduate, get a job, move on and out(!!!), but it makes me a little sad that my kids are all grown up.
I’ve had a few chances to pick up my camera and walk, recently. Otherwise, my fitness endeavors are mostly unchanged: running and walking. My husband and I have a trip overseas coming up in a few weeks, and with the long race scheduled in two months, I’m afraid that maintaining the running and walking ability is all I’m going to be able to do. No injuries allowed!
Hope WildChild is OK!
Any update MOWC? Hoping your worries are lessened.
Wow, Mother Nature finally turned and gave us a BEAUTIFUL breezy warm but cool day! Went to a local park and ran 4 miles. This park is a little hilly - very few hills around here. Must say, those hills wear me out! What is your strategy on hills - shorter strides, deeper strides???
I’m in the market for a fitness/running tank type top with a razor back, good snug chest support but then NOT fitted below the bra area - a little loose, but not overly flowy. Ok if I have to wear a sports bra too for running but would be great to have one that I don’t have to wear one for walking and such. I’m a little busty so I do need support even during low impact. Any suggestions appreciated. I’m not the biggest Lule fan but I’ll look at all suggestions.
Look at Oiselle. I think they have something that sort of loosens up below chest level.
No update at all. I am worried, but I think he’s probably sleeping- or drunk. I’ll talk to him when he gets back in the US tomorrow.
Hugs for Gertrude.
And Valium for MOWC!
He’s very disappointed. He may be done with the full Ironman distance. His body just doesn’t seem to handle races over 7 hours. I reminded him that he had a great season until today.
We head home tomorrow from Colorado, which means I need to do an early and dark streak mile (speaking of stupid) before the 5 hour drive to Denver and 3 hour flight to Nashville. Did some hiking today to pick mushrooms.
Abasket, I am a little busty myself, and I have not found a tank with a built-in bra that would provide adequate support for running. I think it is hard to combine the functionalities of a bra and a tank in one garment. My favorite tank top is LuLu’s TaTa tank, fitted at the top (but not a bra), and then a-line down. I do not think lulu made it this year, sadly. Oiselle’s Flyte top which is stretchy and not too fitted around the belly… Both need a bra under them.
MOWC, he probably needs some time to really process this before he can logically decides what he wants to do. The level of success that hes has achieved is phenominal but I’m sure the outcome of this race was startling and a bit frightening for him. Whatever decision he makes, he will no doubt meet with new successes in his further competitive endeavors.
Yikes, MOWC, I was worried, and I was reading it all hours later, glad the WC is okay.
I did my second sprint tri yesterday, two minutes faster than the first one in May, even with a longer swim (1/2 mile). My swim was fast! It was a down current river swim and I got way out and picked up the fast flow–17 minute half mile and that’s with a long uphill walk from the river to the transition area. I started in the last wave and passed a lot of people on that swim–most people were swimming closer to shore, I was out with the kayakers! And I was mostly swimming breaststroke so I could watch my path. (In the last tri, I did the 500 yards in 13 minutes, so the current really helped.)
I didn’t wear a wet suit, 69 degree water, glad to be cold–it was over 80 when I started the bike, and 90 when I finished. Unusually hot for Portland! The race management did a good job–lots of ice out on the course, cold towels at the finish, ice water troughs at the medical tent (which I guess a few people needed).
I ended up 3/10 in my age group, 79th overall of 140. It was a women’s only event, that was pretty special!
I watched a segment on Galen Rupp and his training with the Nike Oregon Project and read an article on Gwen Jorgensen the triathlete. The level of training and training resources is amazing. Wonder if the Oregon Project takes on masters runners?! I feel pressure to retire and train full time.
Dmd- I would have worn two wetsuits if the water was 69 degrees!
Here’s a feel good story for this morning:
I guess Hope Solo and Ryan Lochte weren’t in the running!
I think I have turned a corner with my running. It was 57 this morning, 94% humidity. First half of the run MAF pace, second half “exhilarating pace”. 5.74 miles, felt great.
I wasn’t online this weekend and wow, so much to catch up on! Glad to hear that MOWC’s WC is doing OK. It must be very discouraging to DNF after all the effort in the first parts of the race, not to mention all the training that leads up to the competition.
Gertrude - congrats on your Half! Pretty amazing to be that close to a PR in the heat. I think you’re doing the Vegas Rock N Roll Half in November - I’ll bet you will PR at that race for sure.
dmd77 - congrats on your tri and especially on an amazing swim. I am in awe of being able to swim in the current in a river like that, especially in the frigid water. Wow, that’s incredible!
PlantMom - good luck to your son as he heads into his senior year. I can definitely relate to the feelings as the last kid is heading out. I miss having our kids around a lot. Your upcoming trip sounds fun!
I enjoyed watching the marathon yesterday morning. It was sad to see Meb struggle so much but he sure was a class act in the finish and the interview afterwards. Galen Rupp had an incredible race, it is so hard to believe that it was only his 2nd marathon competition ever!
We did our RAGNAR simulation this weekend. Friday after work I ran 5 miles. My plan was to then pace H for his 7.4 mile leg to get some extra miles in but with the heat I was just beat. I made it a mile and a half with him and knew that it just wasn’t going to happen. So I ended up just doing a run/walk for 4.75 miles. We got up really early Saturday morning and I had a pretty good 10 mile run. The I finished up later Saturday afternoon with a 7 mile run. Overall it all went OK - it was pretty hard with the heat and especially humidity. But we slept in our own nice comfy bed on Friday night instead of camping outside and I didn’t run my 2nd leg at 3:00am so it wasn’t a totally realistic simulation but it still gave me some confidence for running the RAGNAR next month.
