Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I’ve posted this before, but here is my daily breakfast (unless I’m traveling or have a breakfast meeting- or weekend if H cooks eggs). A few big spoonfuls of nonfat plain Greek yogurt, a large spoonful of organic peanut butter (nothing added), some local honey and a large sprinkle of grape nuts for crunch. For some reason this really hits the spot for me and I get protein and some fat. I get to where I crave it after my run. Iced tea to drink.

I eat either yogurt or eggs for breakfast. Today was full-fat Fage with local honey, raspberries and half a banana. I guess I don’t need the crunch! Once in a blue moon I will eat a BLT for breakfast. I don’t worry too much about what foods are considered breakfast items, I guess!

I grew up with a mother who was a health fanatic. Her trinity: Adele Davis, Dr. Pritikin, and Jack Lalanne. We always had oatmeal. Also, yogurt–which when I was a kid (I’m 64–so this was back in the day) you bought in health food stores and it came in glass bottles. I wanted to eat all the stuff that my friends were eating–sugar-filled Coco Puffs and Wonder Bread (we always had dark, rye Lithuanian bread). My mom did her exercise with Jack every morning and did so well into 70s. Now, I realize that Mom was ahead of her time and I’m the stuff that I hated as a kid and I’m liking it.

A BLT for breakfast sounds fantastic! On Dave’s Killer bread!!! You can even throw an egg on it!

I actually like savory for breakfast. I need my morning egg for savory and then the yogurt for some dairy and a little sweetness. Grape nuts sounds great in yogurt!

At our local mediterranean market I bought a jar of this - honey with various layers of nuts. A spoon of this in yogurt is a fast stir in! https://www.google.com/search?q=mediterranean+honey+and+nuts+in+a+jar&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi977GJp9rOAhVY92MKHRlFDcAQ_AUICCgB&biw=1920&bih=979#imgrc=_tHCOsdJPgrEqM%3A

Glad to hear that Ohio solved the Instapot issues!

I love oatmeal and will eat it with milk, salt, and a hint of butter. I also like Kodiak flapjacks “protein cakes” -pancake mix with high protein content from buttermilk which tastes yummy and is filling. I eat them with a dollop of Greek yogurt and berries. But most mornings I make scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon, Greek yogurt and berries. Yum.

I need a way to make eggs that involves zero mess. I won’t do it if it dirties a pan. There have got to be ways of microwaving eggs in a mug. Anyone?

Pizzagirl, it takes me 30 seconds to wash my designated for eggs Scanpan. I can even stick it into the dishwasher if I am in a hurry. Beats washing a mug, IMO.

Pizzagirl- I think Teriwitt has a breakfast recipe that she does in the microwave in a mug that has eggs.

Sure you can microwave an egg in a cup/mug/small dish.

For one egg, coat your mug lightly with Pam spray, olive oil or butter. Crack the egg in the mug. Poke it with a fork once or twice for a soft cooked egg or whip with a fork and add salt, pepper, veggies, whatever if scrambling. For a soft cooked extra large egg in a small cup, my microwave cooks it in 50 seconds at 70% power. I’d scramble in egg for 1 minute at 100% power and check to see if it’s done. You may want to cover the lid of the soft cooked egg while in the microwave just in case it decides to explode.

I cook an egg every work day in one of these and take it with me to work - I use them a million times without them wearing out! https://www.google.com/express/product/10436529616064126026_0_10046?mall=EastBay&directCheckout=1&utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=product_ads

Lucky Charms was my favorite cereal as a kid until my youngest brother would go through the entire box and eat all the marshmallow thingys leaving just the cardboard tasting cereal behind. Loved coco puffs, count chocula, alpha bits and fruit loops. Yum mm!

I still really like Life cereal. It’s loaded with sugar, although it tends to pretend that it is not. Every now and then I’ll have a bowl for dinner.

Hello to all! Once again I’ve been offline, at least on this CC thread. You all just post so much, that if I’m gone for even a few days it’s too hard to catch up. So here we are, almost at the end of summer. I most likely won’t go back and read all the posts since mid-June – did I miss any really big news???

The condensed version of news from my end: playing lots of golf (& making a little $$$); moving forward with D’s wedding plans (actually, she & fiance do the work and I write the checks); weight holding steady (although I’d like to lose 5 more pounds and 10 would be better); running about 12 miles/week (alternating days); still contending with some right hip issues that cause my gait to feel slightly awkward.

Last week I was back in Cambridge for a couple of days (wedding dress shopping with D) and went to my local running store for a new pair of shoes. My previous pair, Brooks Ghost 8, were really messing with my feet. When I first bought them, they seemed fine, but the last several months they’ve given me really sore toes, especially on my left foot. I didn’t think they were too small, and the sales guy agreed. So, I tried a bunch of shoes and ended up with a pair of Hoka Cliftons. After my first run I was ready to take them back (I have 30 days) – my left knee hurt and I had lots of pain (as opposed to discomfort) in my right hip. But, yesterday I walked 18 holes of golf, and things felt better. So today I tried running again and felt pretty OK – no knee pain and only minimal hip discomfort. I’ll keep testing them.

Welcome back. Which Cliftons did you get? The 3s just came out and have more room in the toe box than the 2s.

Sounds like you are doing great with golf! Sorry your hip is still annoying you!

Trying to think what you have missed. Sabaray ran the Lulu (Seawheeze) half marathon in Vancouver, Gertrude is turning into a half marathon machine, Michael had a bad bike fall a few weeks back and really had some big lumps and bruises, Ohio has had a great track season, Bunsen has a butt/hip/pelvis injury and has had some treatment but is still struggling with it, abasket ran a night race and has been awesomely consistent with her food and exercise, Pizzagirl is retired an is doing all kinds of classes but doesn’t like to get too red-faced and out of breath, I’m on Day 417 of my Stupid Streak, Plantmom is surviving the summer but ruining FitBits with all her running and walking, Busdriver has joined the group, Bromfield is plugging away…that’s the condensed version.

^^^^OMG, I’m going to go on a 6 week hiatus just so I can get one of these accurate, but hilarious recaps from you MOWC!!! (also, what a great memory!!)

Came home early from work to cut both our grass and an elderly neighbor’s grass before the rain tonight and tomorrow and then a couple days at the beach. When I got home, H had already done our grass so I only had to do neighbor’s. What a guy, right?! NO! I was counting on BOTH lawns for my exercise today! Haha, only I can be upset about that! Well, did the neighbors and I’ll have to get some other energy out elsewhere…

(H got a “thank you, but…” text from me - would have been great if he had told me he was doing this since I planned my whole work day and evening around doing both! H needs the hashtag, #COMMUNICATION!!!)

Oh, I’m hurt (not really). @MomofWildChild forgot me! I completed a sprint triathlon.

I bought the Clifton 3s a while back, mostly because I liked the Clifton 2s and because I love the new fuchsia color available in the Clifton 3.They are more comfortable than the Clifton 2s for me. Considering buying the pretty turquoise color too. I had no idea I cared, but I love the new colors.

Oh God! I forgot dmd! I knew I would forget people! So sorry. I also find the 3s to be better for me. I have the turquoise and love it (color matters a lot to me…). I really chew up my Hoka soles and use a lot of Shoe Goo. Interestingly, those ankle top Nikes I bought in the early spring for $$$$ are showing almost no sole wear. Good thing! I wear them only on shorter runs and a lot on the treadmill, but still…

LOL - that was great MOWC! I think we will need a monthly or quarterly recap from you from now on!

Need to give a shout-out to @C3Baker, too - she’s spent her summer outrunning tornadoes and getting up early to run with a group helping homeless individuals get back on their feet.

Great recap, MOWC! Seeing everyone’s accomplishments makes me want to say yet again that I’m not worthy!

Yoga tonight–slow flow. Nice recap, MOWC.

I need to keep a spreadsheet! I can’t believe I missed C3Baker! C3B has done great with her running and mentoring in her running group. Also adding that most of us have battled heat and humidity all summer. A few of us were naughty and spent some time behind jail bars, too.
