Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Nice holiday run with the running group this morning down at the harbor. The “Festival of Sail” is happening so there are several tall ships in the harbor, as well as a sand-sculpting contest where artists create amazing works of sand art. We had a tailgate after, and my oatmeal-yogurt-whole wheat blueberry muffins were not nearly as popular as the chocolate chip cinnamon rolls that someone else brought - lol. Guess which one I ate? (Chocolate chips, cinnamon - yum!)

Some days are great and some days your body just isn’t working with you.

Today, I start my squat warm up and 115 felt awkward. I tried to change my footing, but my body wasn’t having it. After so many tries and beginnings of frustration I kicked it to the curb. I felt let down because I was planning on increasing my weight from last week and having difficulties with a 30 lbs. less was not the plan! Just have to remind myself that my body is still recovering and I need to give it some time, especially after Friday’s workout.

On the diet side of things, I’m trying to get over a food intolerance and I feel extremely run down. Yesterday, the first time I had the food, I felt nauseous, fatigued, and had a headache. The same today after awhile. Might just give up on the food if it’s too much of a fight.

Glad you pulled through your race, MoWC, and Bunsen, I am so jealous of your TRX bands! My apartment complex promised they’d bring some in. What do they get? Resistance bands. Not the same!

MOWC - you need to sharpen your elbows for that 60 year old!

Did a 37 mile bike ride today. Going to do a100 miler next Sunday with younger nephew. Did a 60 miler earlier this summer so think it’s doable. Think I should slow it down to keep the legs fresher.

We were supposed to get rain all day today, so I went for a run yesterday instead (fitness center is closed today). The rain held off until 6 tonight, so took a walk – but boy, was it windy out there. Now they’re saying rain all day tomorrow – but at least the gym is open, so I can go there.

For dinner tonight, I’m trying a new recipe, one that I saw on Facebook of all places. Pizza zucchini boats.

ohio, there is a world of difference between a 60 miler and 100 miles but with smart planning, I have no doubt you will be able to do the 100 successfully. Mile 70-80 is when it often hits the fan. The key will be consistent nutrition during the ride - hydration, carbs, some protein and electrolyte replacement. Hydration from the outset and nutrition from about an hour and a half on. Also, eat a good meal with carbs and protein a couple of hours before the ride. I find that my intestinal tract copes much better drinking water, taking Hammer Enduralytes and eating good energy bars instead of drinking energy drinks that are loaded with glucose. After a while, the constant ingestion of glucose based drinks overwhelms the ability of my stomach and small intestine to process and absorb and I end up not being able to hydrate when I need it the most (after mile 60). Something like Cliff Bloks for when you are in need of a quick boost. Good luck and report back!

Michael - thanks for the advice. I know I’m going to be crying that last 40. Fortunately it is in nwest Ohio and all flat. How often do you take a rest break. If any? Even today I was wishing for an ice bath every so often and was wondering if I should ice if I have a chance?

Where do you keep all the cliff bloks etc. My small little bag only holds so much? Maybe I should by something larger.

We waited until way after lunch to go to the park. Rode 8.5 miles on the elliptibike. The trail was almost empty, but even so I got a few “cool!”, “nice bike”, and “wow!” from my fellow trail users. My legs feel like I ran 5+ miles at a nice pace. My “achy breaky butt” (Mr.'s words - LOL") felt good.

Michael, I am so with you on the glucose drinks. My stomach does not agree with them on really long runs. That’s why I like MOfWC’s Huma gels - they have some fruity texture to them.

Ohio- you can do it. Stuff some PB&J sandwiches in your jersey.

I vote for banana slices and PB sandwiches! yum.

@Niquii77 - a step back can mean two steps forward next time! Hope you are OK and can figure our what is going on with your nutrients. Food intolerances suck!!!

Send you management a link to TRX kits on Amazon… They are $50 off…

Ohio, if this is your first ride over 60 miles, I would plan on 3 fairly evenly spaced rest stops. The stops should be only as long as is necessary to refuel, refill your bottles and hit the bathroom if needed (and if you are hydrating well, it should be). 15 minutes tops. A mistake that is often made is to extend the breaks longer than they should be which results in your legs becoming dead and your “systems” going into “I’m done” mode. You then spend the next 5 miles feeling like crap as you try to get back into a rhythm. MOWC’s suggestion of a PB&J sandwich and Bunsen’s of a sliced banana thrown in are great. Some real food at the second rest stop is a welcome relief from sports foods and that combination gives you high glycemic carbs that you want for quick energy replacement (jelly), protein and healthy fats (PB), low glycemic carbs for sustained energy (choose a sprouted whole grain bread) and potassium (the banana). All of your ride nutrition can be carried in the pockets of a cycling jersey. As to ice, that really depends on the temp. You may also want to carry a couple of Advil in case you need relief from some aches and pains.

“busdriver11, I also like the Balega Hidden Comfort socks which are also part of REI’s sale, I think. You might want to check those out, too”

Okay, two trips to REI today, and I got those socks and the hobbit socks that Bunsen recommended. Couldn’t find the Body Glide-Foot, but found something similar for blisters. Hoping to go on a 5 mile run tomorrow and have it not hurt. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Bus, do you have enough toe room in your running shoes? Where do you get the worst blisters? Fingers crossed that the cooler weather will help.

Ok I lied, popping in before Christmas.

I didn’t realize my rheumy had ordered another ANA test (antinuclear antibodies are the drunk antibodies that attack my healthy cells). It’s now showing up as negative which means that at the very least my immunosuppresion drugs are working… at best it could mean that I’m headed for remission

(My inflammation markers are still through the roof but I’ll take any good news!)

I recall there was some discussion of tart cherries being good for reducing post-exercise soreness. Here is a site with some yummy suggestions on how cherries can be included in one’s everyday diet. Yumm!!!

Ohio, maybe you can put some tart cherry jam on those PB&J sandwiches? Mr. wishes you good luck! Mr. says even though he hates PB, he would scarf down those sandwiches in the middle of a 100 mile ride!

“Bus, do you have enough toe room in your running shoes? Where do you get the worst blisters? Fingers crossed that the cooler weather will help”

Yes Bunsen, I have plenty of toe room. I’ve tried every possible wide toe box shoe in the last year, about ten pairs (thankfully all returnable). I’ve tried bunion covers, moleskin. The podiatrist says it’s not the shoes, it’s because when I run, my feet turn inward, rubbing my bunions against the shoes (blisters on the inside of my feet, by the bunions). I got an orthotic made for me, that hopefully will help. It’s supposed to stop me from turning inward, however, I haven’t been able to run in them yet.

Thanks for all the advice. Love pbj sandwiches. Was looking at some old Tour de France photos from the 20s and will bring along a couple packs of Marlboro cigarettes-crush proof box.

Also am thinking of upgrading my helmet that I picked up from tjmaxx a couple weeks ago. Not very comfortable.Any suggestions? Of course I’m going to need new cycling gloves and shorts too. Maybe the Fenix as well. $$$$.

Helmets: we have a joke at our store, that’s not actually a joke: people have Bell heads or Giro heads. Those are two brands of helmets. (I find Bell has a pressure point right in the middle of my forehead, but my Giro fits perfectly.) My advice is: go to a real bike shop and try on their helmets. Once you find one that isn’t instantly uncomfortable, leave it on for at least five minutes. If you find one that you forget you have it on, buy that one. For longer rides, a lot of cyclists want a lightweight, well-ventilated helmet.

It was a great weekend, I wish we had more 3 day weekends! Saturday morning was a 17 mile run. I had an emergency bathroom stop at mile 7 but fortunately was right at the fitness center in the park that the trail runs through so had access to nice bathrooms. Other than that break, my pace was really good for the run. We had a great time at the football game Saturday afternoon and the great thing about a long run like that in the morning is that it makes it easy to enjoy a really good tailgate with no guilt!

Sunday was my niece’s wedding a few hours away. It was a beautiful day and a great time. It was not a fancy affair but just lots of fun and a good example of how you don’t have to spend a ton of money to throw a really fun wedding. All of our kids came and it was great to see them. D and her fiance left early Monday morning for a 2 week vacation in Greece - totally jealous! We got home yesterday afternoon and I got a good 7 mile run in. It was 91 degrees and humid again but it was OK. H doesn’t do as well in the heat and cut his run short at 5 miles. I think the heat bothers him a lot more than it does me, but then again I think I really suffer in the cold more than he does. Tonight will be a shorter run with the running club.

PG - So glad you made it through the airport OK! Vienna is so beautiful and I’ll bet you will continue to get lots of steps every day.

MOWC - sounds as if you did well on your 5K. Your daughter and SIL are really lucky you were able to go rescue them!

BB - Your Elliptical Arc sounds great! I’m really glad you’re able to get out on the trail and get some miles in.

Busdriver - I hope you get some relief from the blisters. I get them occasionally and it is so painful!
