Michael Pollan’s famous words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

I try to do that. Last night we had ribeye steak - I has a piece about half the size of a deck of cards. Enjoyed every last bite (kind of wanted to lick the plate) but now I’m good on steak for a few weeks. The remainder of dinner was roasted potatoes & steamed broccoli.

The one processed food I keep in my diet is breakfast cereal. I eat Quaker oatmeal squares several times per week, and All-Bran daily on my yogurt. Not sure if that is ideal, but it seems to work for me. Oh, and chocolate. I can’t give up my chocolate.

Update on my head – husband looked at it, and said it was a slight cut – no need for stitches. As I suspected, the part that hurts the most today is my bum. I went swimming today and felt fine.

I’m with you Gertrude – gotta have my chocolate. (Let’s change Pollan’s words to: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. And some chocolate.)

I have two processed food weaknesses – I have a Luna bar every afternoon and a coffee yogurt every night. Both help with my calcium intake. I am trying to wean off of the high-sugar coffee yogurt and have a plain yogurt with some maple syrup mixed in. But honestly, that coffee yogurt gives me immense pleasure.

That article on sugar is the Times’ most emailed story, as it should be. It’s astonishing to me that researchers at Harvard (Harvard! – the pinnacle of US education!) accepted $50,000 to doctor their reports. When you think about the number of people with diabetes and heart problems who followed bogus advice … really disheartening.

REI Garage has a number of older Brooks shoes at significantly reduced prices - PureCadence 4, Adrenaline 15, Launch 2, PureConnect 4, Ravenna 6, Transcend 2. Sadly nothing I am wearing now!

If coffee yogurt counts as one of your biggest vices, fireandrain, I think you’re okay!

I highly recommend “Salt, Sugar, Fat” by Michael Moss. I know I’ve mentioned it many times on this thread but it is an excellent read on the manipulation of the American diet.

sabaray - I just bought a couple pairs of Brooks Glycerin 13 at Roadrunner sports - they were about $90 which is a significant reduction from their usual $150 or so. I guess that style is on it’s way out, but it has worked beautifully for me so far.

Here we go, defining “everything” and “moderation.” LOL, we are beginning to sound like a bunch of lawyers arguing a case… Wait, some of us are lawyers!

Coffee yogurt is surely better for you than the key lime yogurt I have everyday at lunch. I love my yogurt - sure, it has more sugar than I need, but I can live with that.

I eat plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit or Stonyfield cream tops and just leave the “fruit” on the bottom. Noosa is my downfall… So good!

Speaking of yogurt, while I always have a Stonyfield whole milk plain quart in the refrig, if I want a flavored yogurt I cannot eat anything besides Noosa for the last year or so - have you tried it? I don’t think there is a coffee but they change and add flavors all the time: http://www.noosayoghurt.com/our-yoghurt/

The texture is the closest I have found to the A-MAZING yogurt we ate daily in France (and that my runner cousin practically lives on). Noosa should be paying me royalties because I have converted oodles of people I know to it. A friend of my D who has never been a yogurt fan sent me a picture the other day of his refrigerator with 3 large sized containers of Noosa honey. He said, “you did it. I’m hooked. Now buying industrial sized.”

Abasket, I loooove Noosa. What I also like about them is that they package their individual containers in such a way that they are at or under roughly 150 calories and just as filling as a larger container of Chobani that has the same number of calories (from mostly sugar!).

Have you tried Ellenos? It might be a local thing here in Seattle. You might be able to find it at Whole Foods now.

Have not heard of it. But I’ll look!!!

I use yogurt kind of like a topping for fruit. As opposed to the other way around. So, I’ll have 1/2 cup of fresh fruit, a dollop or two of yogurt and then a sprinkle of homemade granola (or sans granola). One small container of Noosa is three servings for me. Helps to justify the extra $$!!!

Ellenos is what I often buy for dinner at the cafeteria when I have a late night class. It tastes amazing, like ice cream.

I have been using my Instant Pot to make my own yogurt for several weeks. There’s a few steps to it, but very little hands on time. It’s good - I’m starting to prefer it to store bought! I mix in some (defrosted) frozen three berry mix from Costco & top with All Bran. which makes it a little bit sweet and crunchy.

Shhhh. Don’t tell people about Ellenos. They might ruin it. (I made a chocolate mousse recently with plain Ellenos and melted bittersweet chocolate chips (those two ingredients only) and it was really good. Not quite as tasty as the kind with cream, but really good.)

I checked. No Ellenos in Ohio. Have one for me!

Gertrude, if you have any of this sitting in your freezer, toss it!

I’m back in Portland after six days on the east coast (New York and New Jersey). The trip home turned into an 18-and-a-half-hour nightmare of delays (including missing a connecting flight by two minutes). Finally got home at 1 AM (local time) after starting the trip at 8:30 (NY time). Of course I was wide awake at 4:30 AM, since I’d been getting up at 7:30 the whole trip. Somehow managed to persuade myself to take the dog for a run anyway. At some point I’m going to crash, but right now I’m managing.

I am feeling pretty proud of myself, though–I ran four of the six days I was east, and even got up early Sunday and got my “long” run (6.5 miles) in before the day began. That run was on quiet country roads after an air-cleaning thunderstorm, and it was really a pleasure. The two runs in New York City, on the Hudson River Trail and the Highline, were rather less enjoyable. NYC is so noisy and there are so many people–I just felt overwhelmed. My run is usually a source of introvert energy for me–and the effort of dealing with so many people and so many dogs and so many bikes was huge.

I did rent a Citibike for a short ride one day; that was surprisingly enjoyable. It was kind of relaxing to be riding a big heavy clunker of a commuter bike slowly down a flat path. Not my usual cycling experience.

Can you get Noosa at regular grocery stores or is it a Whole Foods thing? I will send my shopper (H) out for some!

I’m tired and a little sore. Work is insane, and I had to do a lot while I was on the trip, too! No rest for the weary.

I need to be much better about sugar. My sister made me a birthday cake, which I loved, and which stayed in PA except for the couple of pieces I had Sunday and Monday.

Noosa is widely available - but be careful, there are two types - the “healthier” 150 calorie serving size and then the gargantuan flat containers that are pretty much dessert (but delicious). They have 280+ calories a serving and a lot of added sugar. I have bought a few of those and divide them in half for a treat.

MOfWC, I buy Noosa (packs of 4) at Target.

Right. But I’ve never seen the flat containers as one serving. If I’m buying a yogurt off the shelf that is NOT Stonyfield whole milk plain, I just so prefer the taste and texture of Noosa by far. Works for me!
