Oh, I have running dreams often. And flying dreams. And swimming dreams. (I don’t have cycling dreams, though.) They all have in common that wonderful feeling over floating over the landscape (when it’s swimming, I’m floating over a coral reef). Sometimes when I wake up I try to capture that feeling so that I can try to move like that when I’m awake.
Gloomy and dreary today–got in 30 minutes on the elliptical at home.
NotRichEnough–I can’t wear the Fitbit on my other wrist–it would clash with my 14K David Yurman classic

Ha! I wish! Currently, I’m encountering work dreams. I’d much prefer if they veered towards my athletic goals. ![]()
Because we all get injured due to our own stupidity sometimes…I’ve been nursing an injured hip. To be honest, I didn’t think it was THAT bad when I hurt myself, but through squatting this past month my leg made it very clear it was not going away any time soon. There’s tenderness and weakness when externally rotating it and if I’m not paying attention I’d imagine my hip would be akin to cracking a glow stick. I’ve placed squats on the severe back burner until I get my hip back to normal and I found out that one leg’s dorsiflexion is lacking so that’s another project. (It explains why I starting to notice a very subtle twist at the bottom of my squat.) Anywho…
Out with the old, in with the new: Deadlifts. They were never really on my radar. I’d mess around with some dumbbells and RDLs here and there, but it really feels good pulling them with the bar. Additionally, sumo deadlifts will help me on my hip.
See, I knew it was a dumb question. ![]()
I got home from CA at 1:30 am and then had trouble falling asleep. I am really dragging this afternoon. I am really beat - too much going on at work and I feel as if I can’t keep up. If I complain about feeling wiped out, I get helpful suggestions that I am doing too much running and I should cut back. Yeah, let’s cut out the thing I really enjoy just so that I can work more - what a great idea! Sorry for the bad attitude, I am just fed up with work.
Tomorrow morning is a marathon relay race. There are four teams from our local running club participating. It’s an annual event and should be a lot of run, especially since the forecast shows that it should stop raining for the race. H and I are a team of two but he is talking about running extra since our marathon training plan calls for a much longer run this weekend. I think that sounds good in theory, but honestly I am so wiped out right now I am not sure I will be up for it.
Most of October is a lot of travel so my marathon training is going to take a real hit. I know I’ll get through the marathon one way or another but I’m not expecting a great time.
sabaray - I hope your run goes well tomorrow morning. What distance are you doing? I’m glad you are feeling better today and that you’ve got friends lined up to run with you. I will NOT be blocking your posts for the next month - I will be anxiously awaiting updates on your final weeks of training. I am really excited for you doing MCM.
I’ve never had a running dream - I wish I did. Mine are usually some manner of anxiety dream. I still have the college “unprepared for a test” or “can’t find the right room” dream. Last night I dreamed that I lost my suitcase with important stuff in it & had to track it down. Enjoy your athletic dreams!!
I have had my share of running dreams, including the recent one described up thread.
Sabaray, good luck. You can do this. Flat is good, slow is good, drinking water and eating something that does not upset your stomach is good.
Sabaray’s race isn’t until later in October, right? Whatever, one day at a time with positive thinking that each of those days holds promise of good things happening.
Ugh, 5.5 hours driving in the car today part of the time with driving rain. Never so glad to get home. I’ll be short of steps today. Which does not bode well for that reuben sandwich with home fried chips and homemade dip I ate for lunch - I only ate 1/2 of it, and it was good. There were some delicious salads that I could have chosen and was leaning towards…but it was well known deli - you’ve gotta try a sandwich, right?!
Reuben? Mmmm… Yumm. No salad comes even close to that. Here is my philosophy: if I see a menu and see something that looks delicious but less healthy than I would normally eat, I think “Is it stuff that I never make or simply cannot make at home?” If so, I will take a small portion. I can make pasta dishes and all sorts of things potato at home, so I rarely eat them when eating out. Reuben is a different issue. So there. I approve, abasket.
I’m fessing up also @abasket. My friend took us to a breakfast place that her cousin owns. Eggs, bacon and oh my goodness a delicious cinnamon roll, warmed up.
Then we window shopped. And then it rained the rest of the day. Oh well, tomorrow is another day, right?
I think my dream tonight will be about that cinnamon roll, no running dream here.
No running dreams. The only recurring dream I have is going back to college and no one remembering me. My college roommate admits she has the same dream…
Signed D, SIL and myself up for the Thanksgiving Turkey trot.
I have LOTS of college dreams about classes, etc. I do dream that I just can barely lift my legs to walk.
Right, I would never make a reuben at home. I did skip dinner (lunch was late) except for some leftover roasted beets. So at least calorie wise, it could have been worse. And somehow, I managed to get in my daily allotment of legit steps - 11K+ even with the traveling. It did take a brisk mile walk that included me jogging the last couple of blocks cause it started to rain pretty hard - but darn it, did it!
Tonight, I hope to visit Deb’s cinnamon roll dream.
Lol, all these dreams! The only recurring dream I ever had about academia was long after law school where I would dream that I was 350 pages behind in my case law reading for my Corporations class a week before the final exam which was the sole basis for the grade. What made the dream so interesting was that it was actually what had occurred. But I ended up getting it done and got a B in the course. I could never really correlate the dream with stressful events in my current life so I’m not sure why I was having it. Haven’t had the dream for years. Flying dreams, had them all the time up until a few years ago. My modality of flying was by doing the breast stroke with powerful arm strokes. Haven’t had that dream for a while. Maybe it’s been replaced by my parallettes dream ;).
I love Reubens! One of my absolute favorite sandwiches.
20.67 miles in the bank. My friend who is also running did 24 today and we walked for a while after completing our respective runs and agreed we were never, ever doing this again. We also agreed that it was worth it for the chocolate milk. Route was a repeat of last week, which is a bit hilly but no big climbs or extended challenges. Pays off in speed when you’re running that flat course (which MCM mostly is).
Man, I’m glad that’s over. Will always be firmly in the turtle camp, but I’m lapping everyone still sitting on their couch.
Yay, sabaray!!! Told ya!
Awesome job.
Over this past summer, I have really grown to enjoy running. I’m wondering how it’s going to be over the winter and looking for advice from experienced runners. I’d rather not join a gym–being outdoors and peaceful is a big part of what I love about running. What do I need to know about running in cold weather (other than wear layers!)? Do yucky winter roads ruin running shoes? Can it feel as good running on a treadmill (if I need to join a gym)? There is a nearby gym with an indoor track, but it’s expensive. The cheap gym has its treadmills in a movie theater! I think I’d hate that, though I must admit I haven’t tried it.
Outdoor cardio training in the winter can be a lot of fun if you dress right. While I no longer run, I cycle through the winter months. Layers of breathable clothing is important but the trick is also not to overdress. You will generate a lot of heat and sweat from the exertion and you want the sweat to be able to evaporate so you don’t feel wet and clammy. Dress so that you feel a little bit chilly when you start out so that you don’t overheat but make sure you wear gloves and good wool socks when it’s really cold so that your extremities stay warm. Also, keep running outside as the weather changes so that your body acclimates. In the cold weather, keep your ears warm with a head band. The experienced runners on this board can also talk to you about how they deal with inhaling frigid air. Some people wear light scarfs.
The rule of thumb I use is to dress as if it’s 20 degrees warmer – so if it’s 25 degrees, dress as though it’s 45. I often find myself taking off things like gloves and hats. I have a Lululemon jacket (thanks to this forum) with sleeves that cover my hands entirely, and I will do that instead of wearing gloves.
I typically don’t run when it’s truly frigid outside – I often make exceptions when the sun is out and it’s a beautiful day, but typically if it’s below 20 degrees I would prefer to be on a treadmill. Especially if it’s windy and the windchill is significant. So I’ve never really had to deal with inhaling frigid air.
I usually wait to run after the snow has been cleaned up. Running shoes that are really breathable – designed for hot summer weather – may not be the best bet in the winter. I have a pair of Nikes that a running store recommended that have some very basic waterproofing – they aren’t good in pouring rain, but they provide a little more protection if I run on wet sidewalks.
I have a pair of insulated running tights with a wind shield on the front (from Athleta) that are great for colder, windy days.
As much as I prefer to run outside, if I’m going to be miserable – if it’s frigid, snowing, pouring rain, etc. – I’m happier on a treadmill indoors. I recently learned that there’s an indoor track nearby, that I can use with my gym pass, that I need to check out.
Thanks MNK and Fireandrain and thanks Francesca for asking about running in cold weather. This is also my first year of running and this is really helpful to me.

I second that. It is not the cold, it is all the rain that gets me. Snow is very rare here in my woods, so can’t give any advice on that. I have talked to some runners from Alaska, and they said they use plastic bags to wrap their feet before they put their running shoes on. Even with waterproof shoes, if snow gets into the shoes, it melts from the heat inside the shoe, so plastic keeps the feet dry. Also, traction is very important. Some runners use small screws to modify the soles of their shoes to add more traction.
