Love that you met Meb. I met him in Las Vegas in 2010 and treasure my picture with him. My son was running in Central Park a few years ago and Meb came up and ran with him and said, “Hi, I’m Meb.” My son said, “Yeah- I know who you are!”
That’s some bragging material Gertrude - so cool!
Nice to read about all the activity and fun everyone is having. Looks like this is going to be a good fall to enjoy the foliage and cooler weather. Looks like we’re getting rain all weekend though so no outdoor activity for me. Going to Harrisburg today for a wedding so I wouldn’t have been able to ride outdoors anyway.
And as if I don’t have enough to keep me busy on some other fronts, I decided to reorganize the floor plan on the side of my studio that’s dedicated to weight lifting and body weight training in order to make room for a new power cage. The floor now has pieces of blue painter’s tape marking the dimensions of where relocated equipment and the new cage will go. So far I’ve relocated my rack of Dumbbells which fit in their new spot as expected and my assisted pull up/dip machine which fit, well not exactly as I had thought. But that sucker, with its weight stack, must weigh about 350-400 lbs and was a beast to partially disassemble, move and put back together. Not doing that again! The new cage should arrive in 2 weeks. Uprights had to be custom cut to fit beneath the ceiling. It will be good to have though so that both my clients and I can do heavy barbell squatting and benching without worrying about what happens with the weights if we blow a rep. Had a cage before but gave it to my son when I got a combination pulley/Smith machine that also functioned as a cage but without enough interior room for out of control drops. Not that I am looking for out of control drops, but with the new cage, if it happens, both people and equipment will be safe from harm. My wife is a saint to put up with all of this!
Speaking of which, my wife was going nuts looking for her Fitbit all week. She thought she was losing her mind. Finally found it last night. In the safe where she keeps her good jewelry. Must of put it in there when she returned jewelry after our daughter’s wedding last weekend and found it when she took jewelry out that she wanted for the wedding today. She must really value that Fitbit :).
I like your wife MK - priorities.
LOL, Michael! Glad she found her FitBit!
I’m really happy with my run today (and I find I don’t feel that way too often these days). I realized I had set goals that weren’t really consistent (realized this well into my run). I wanted 10 miles (for the first time in awhile) and also wanted 2 hours. Well, even trying to go really slow, which I wanted to, I wasn’t going to be at 2 hours at the end of 10 miles. It was 43 and sunny. I wore my new Oiselle Leslie tights (which I love), a Wazzie wool Oiselle long sleeved shirt and the light, thin Oiselle jacket which rolls up into its own pocket over it. I really tried to keep HR low and pace slow so I could stand this distance. I rolled the jacket up at about 6 miles and it was very easy to carry since it has a strap and rolls up really small. You can put it on your arm with the elastic strap or just put it in your palm with the strap over your hand. I did both. So- I wound up with 1:57 or so and 11 miles. I walked the last 3 minutes, so that sort of counts for 2 hours. I was really happy with this, although I wanted this to be slower. I picked up the pace more than I should have in the last few miles- smelling the barn, I guess. Then I voted. I took 1 Huma gel at about 5 miles.
This was our first cool weekend morning, and the range of attire was something to behold. I saw everything from bare chests (males) to parkas (mainly walkers). 1 deer and lots of Golden Retrievers- all of whom I spoke to!
I’d be REALLY happy with that run, MOWC - great job! Glad you kept your shirt on.
A little shy of 8 this morning - got out with my running group and had a nice, easy progression run - didn’t get quite as quick as I wanted near the end, but we have a wind advisory today! Cold wind in my face out of the NNW for most of the run. From summer to winter, it seems.
Made chicken shwarma from the NYT for lunch today - yum. Now I’d like a nap!
Way to go, MOfWC!!
Any long distance runners have a favorite gel? I’ve tried out a few (Hammer Gel, Power Gel) on longer runs and they’re ok. I think I’m searching for a blend of easy to “imbibe”, natural flavor, and energy boost. thanks all
Huma! I really think it’s the best there is. I just ordered more from Amazon. I like all the favors, but others have favorites. The consistency is good and it seems to work well for my stomach.
I second what MOfWC said! Tried them all, and Huma is a definite winner.
Thank you MOWC and BunsenBurner! I will get some of those and try them out. Really appreciate it!
Just under 23k steps today which is a record for me. Also 69 flights of steps. But it was in Nice and Cannes so I can’t complain. And it justifies the wine and gelato.
Wow FallGirl – way to go! I believe if the steps are fun, they will add up fast! Have some gelato for me!
12 miles on my Elliptibike. Sixty degrees, sun, gorgeous leaves, clear blue sky. Just perfect.
In the running group that I’m at odds with, someone posed that she really couldn’t understand the whole FitBit thing and asked what was the purpose. It’s hard to explain, and it certainly isn’t for everyone, but I think they serve a real purpose for many people. Corporate life, in particular, is SO sedentary, that, in my view, anything that gets your butt out of the chair is worthwhile!
Bunsen- how did the 12 miles feel? Were you tired at the end? How does it feel compared to running effort? How fast can you go?
I can’t stand any of the gels–the consistency just makes me queasy–but I very much like Jelly Belly Sport Beans and I routinely carry GinGins (the traveler’s candy), which come individually wrapped and are a little blast of ginger and sugar. I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I start running longer distances than the 8 or so miles I’m doing now.
I want to try Jelly Belly Sports beans!
Great job everyone - sounds like some beautiful fall weather going on today!
On this morning’s pup walk someone walked by me wearing coat, hat and mittens - NO MITTENS YET!!!
MOfWC, I managed to get it done in just about an hour, so 12 mph. Officially, the manual says one can go 15 mph or possibly faster, but I am not Meb! It is definitely more effort than biking, but less effort and definitely much less impact than running (no impact at all, so my “cracked butt” felt amazingly well). I was tired when I finished but not wiped out, so it felt like I ran 6-7 miles at a moderate pace. I finally got the technique under control - it does require a little bit of getting used to the thing. The most interesting thing is that I get a good arm workout as well, because for me, some leaning onto the handlebar to keep the body upright is needed.
Saw a unicycle, a bunch of tandem bikes, a strange pedal-powered cucumber-like contraption, and a few recumbent bikes. So I was not the only weirdo on the trail! One dude exclaimed, “Awesome sh…!” I took it as a complement, not as an insult, although I have no idea what the dude meant.
Thanks! That’s exactly what I was looking for. It sounds perfect for you with this injury. I’m glad you got it.
The new Runner’s World is worth picking up for anyone interested changes in running and racing over the years. There are statistics comparing everything from average marathon finishing times, number of available races, number of participants, nutrition, gear etc.
