FYI on FC: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1932445-fallen-chemist-p1.html
That is so sad about fallenchemist! I remember he posted some very sane responses to questions I had (I think on the Emory forum) because I think people compare the 2 schools when they’re making a list. What a sad loss for his family and those of us on CC who appreciated him. He never had an unkind word for anyone.
sabaray - I was so worried about you yesterday! Holy cow - 3 bags of saline at mile 21!!! I am so glad those people got you to medical, you clearly were in trouble. What an amazing accomplishment to get 21 miles in under those conditions, I am in awe. I am so glad that you are OK and it’s great that your daughter was there to support you during and after the race. That must have made you feel really good!
Saturday was a 10 mile run for me and harder than it should have been. My legs just hurt most of the run. I’m in Silicon Valley for a few days on business and need to get a couple short runs in today and tomorrow and then rest for a couple days. My marathon is on Saturday and thankfully the weather forecast looks pretty good at this point.
Sorry to hear the news about fallenchemist.
C3Baker - -just want to send good thoughts for your marathon on Saturday. Sorry your legs hurt for the 10 mile run.
I am sorry to hear of FC’s death. While I did not always agree with his actions, he took his job as a moderator very seriously and was obviously very committed to it. How sad for his friends and family.
Indulged in some retail therapy today - went to Lulu and got a new pair of the First Mile Tech tight. They are lined with fleece and are more hugged so offer compression and support. I’m looking forward to some cold weather to actually try them out!
I’m taking an easy week this week. I might do some hot yoga again. C3Baker, I don’t know how you do it! I hope the weather continues to hold for you. Boy can it make a difference!
Wow, that is so sad about fc. Life can be so fleeting, one day someone seems fine, and the next day… and I still think about iDad often. I am so bewildered.
Never had an issue with fc. I appreciated that he was very intelligent and thoughtful, and tried to allow conversations though we got out of bounds, trying to just get us back on track. I am sad for his family.
So sorry to hear about fallenchemist. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Sabaray how was the fit on the first mile tech tights? I read that they run really small.
Retail therapy is the best!
The tights are snug, no question. I went with one size larger. They are intended to be snug. I left the dressing room and the SA checked out the rear view (ha, ha) and assured me they fit appropriately. They felt really good on my quads today. The waistband is lower (I prefer the higher waists) but the compression effect on the legs feels terrific.
MODERATOR’S NOTE;
I think we can all agree not to speak ill of the dead. You all have more class than that. Posts deleted.
Good to know about the tights, sabaray. I have been thinking lately that I will need something to run in when the weather gets cold. Oddly I just saw some advertising for the Lulu First Mile jacket. Don’t know if anyone here has one, but thought it was cute.
The Tyson’s store had a really nice selection of cold weather gear today - and frankly, some of the most helpful Lulu associates I’ve ever encountered. The jackets run slim - I’d say anyone with any bust to speak of will want to size up.
We are supposed to set a record tomorrow for the hottest November day ever. 87 predicted. My jackets and vests remain in the closet…
OMG. I really need to invest in some land here in the PNW 'cause if it is getting that hot elsewhere, we will be mobbed with transplants.
Pulled a cup of Stonyfield yogurt out of the fridge this morning, and it made me think of idad.
Finally have a moment to take a breath and try to catch up. sabaray, hope you are recovering from the marathon and heat. The vagaries of weather can have such an impact on how we perform. When I ran the Philadelphia Marathon many years ago, it was raining and in the low 50’s. Opposite of your weather but I couldn’t finish. Bonked so hard from the elements that I got lost at mile 20 - even though the course at that point was just big circular loops of East River and West River Drives along the river, requiring just crossing a bridge at each end. I lost my sense of direction and couldn’t figure out what direction to run in! In more recent years, I’ve done 100 mile bike events in the mid-summer heat and sunshine where notwithstanding having trained extensively, my body just shut down at mile 70 or so due to severe heat exhaustion and couldn’t any longer even process hydration. These things just happen to all of us who push our boundaries. As disappointing as it was for you, you’re in good company and should feel proud of your effort. I’m sure you’ll figure out how to train better for the kinds of conditions you encountered and if you’ve got questions about that, you know you’ve got a great bunch of supporters on this board who will be rooting for you and glad to offer good advice.
Thanks, sabaray! The Tyson’s store is closest to my house (very close to my new office location).
Just registered for the Avon 39 walk next May. I’m more concerned about the fund raising than in whether I can do the walking!
I think next training cycle will have to include some late afternoon/early evening running in the summer sun. As you all know, I do most of my running in the early morning and that’s fine for fitness - but not for an event that could potentially be a hot one.
I am very grateful for this community. @MichaelNKat, thanks for sharing - stories like those and what @MomofWildChild has shared of her son’s experience with the full Ironman recently have really helped. Bless my mother - but “you were so close! Only 5 more miles!” - only the toughest part of the damn course, Mom!- not what I need to hear right now. Hearing the voices of experience here really helps to move past the disappointment and begin again.
@FallGirl, put me down as a supporter. Let me know when the fundraising begins in earnest - I’d be very proud to support your efforts!
Hmmm…I didn’t recall that but it must be from iDad that I got hooked on Stonyfield… <3
I don’t know what Avon 39 is ???
Sabaray, if you go back a couple of months you will find post after post from many of us complaining/whining/sweating about doing 3/5/7 miles in 80 degree weather - and you did 21! I mean, thank God our bodies give some warning about when it has had all it can take - pushing it beyond that can be a very unwise decision. Be an experienced athlete/exercise person - but also, being a smart one…very wise.
Thanks so much Sabaray.
Abasket the Avon 39 is a 2 day walk to raise money for breast cancer. The walks are in different cities and the route is supposed to be 39 miles but it varies. My friend who did the running program with me is forming a team although at this point we are registered as individuals because we haven’t come up with a team name yet.
^^^Very nice! That’s a hefty amount of walking over 2 days!
