Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I did bring it up with my cardiologist and he didn’t seem too concerned (I am going to a new cardio because this one was less than helpful… but that appt is in January).

I have an appt with my PCP next week so I’ll go ahead and ask her. I hadn’t thought of a prescription for something. Though it seems obvious now… :"> (are emojis not working? it’s the embarrassed face…)

No need to feel embarrassed! It’s our nature to want to “fix” a problem on our own and we often forget to let the professional be our advocate!

Even with a prescription, the likelihood of insurance covering it is very slim, as I discovered the couple of times I needed medical devices like that facedown chair after my eye surgery.

Ok good to know. I’ll at least get a recommendation and see if insurance will cover anything.

Some insurance companies are actually testing/trialing the option:

The Garmin Vivosmart HR is waterproof but like most of the lower priced trackers is not all that accurate or reliable for heart rate. The Garmin wristwatch units are excellent though and are waterproof. The absolutely best site for reviews of performance and sports technology, including wearable devices, is www.dcrainmaker.com

Try Sworkit app for fitness and LifeSum for food

@MichaelNKat thanks for that link. Interestingly, this was his review of the Fitbit Charge

@Momofwildchild I think I’m going to get my mom the Alta for Christmas. She wants a tracker but primarily wants it to track her steps and sleeping… plus she likes the idea of “move reminders.”

roman, if memory serves me right, those comments were for daily life activities and not working out, yes? I think that for cardio exercise, the Fitbit Charge bites the dust compared to heart rate strap units. Might be wrong but that’s what I recall.

For now, I just need day-to-day HR monitoring. I am not quite at the point yet where I can do exercises that would raise my heart rate too much.

When I’m in better health, I will probably switch over to the HR strap. For now it looks like I’m looking for something between Fitbit and a strap. I will see what my doc has to say before buying anything

I have worn both my Charge and Garmin 235 at the same time and have results that are pretty much the same, for what it’s worth.

I am resting today - it seems I now have a cold and I’m giving myself permission to take a break. It feels very odd after being in a routine for so long to not be out there running. I have Pilates tomorrow, assuming I can breathe, and I think I’ll go to hot yoga this weekend.

How are all the weekend racers feeling? Excited, I hope!

I have a 10 mile race this Saturday which isn’t particularly important, but in true form, I’m anxious and stressed about it!

Sabaray- are you sore? It is common to get a cold after a marathon. You stress your body so much that you lose the resistance to bugs.

Good luck on your race MOWC.

Take care sabaray.

I am back on my yoga/run and walk routine. Have switched to 2 weekend runs and one or two treadmill runs midweek. Missing the summer sun.

Hope the weather cools down for that 10 mile MOWC.

I’ve had a slight cold since the weekend. Just enough to wear me down a bit. I seemed to keep it from developing too much with echinacea and a swig of apple cider vinegar a couple times a day. Pretty much over it now. Will be traveling for work today and tomorrow with numerous hours in the car so sadly my little Alta hourly step wheel will be dim.

Hope you feel better quickly Sabaray!

It is supposed to cool down this afternoon and be in the low 40s for the race, which is good, except I now begin the “oh what to wear?” agonizing!

I am sore - as in the run over by a truck sore. I’m sure I’ll feel better in a few days. That sounds like a good race, MOWC - I really liked the ten miler I did last spring and plan to do it again - I might even train for it this time!

@FallGirl, I’m afraid I can’t join you in missing the summer sun!

I hope you can rest and heal, sabaray. Do you ever get massage? I have one booked for Tuesday after the marathon. I’m hoping that will help work out some of the soreness I’m sure I’ll feel.

“Run over by a truck sore” - haha, that is a perfect description of the after-effects of a marathon!

I am right there with MOWC on the “oh what to wear?” agonizing! We also have temps in the low 40s forecast for my marathon on Saturday and it is really hard to figure out what to wear to be warm enough in the beginning and to not be too warm after a few hours. Not wild about the idea of wearing something to toss after a few miles - I have already pared down my wardrobe to where I don’t really have anything I’m willing to lose.

I only miss the long days of sunshine, Sabaray. I don’t miss the heat and humidity.

Add me to the ranks of those fighting a cold. I’m just about over it now & glad that it came at a time where it didn’t really disrupt anything. I did another round of mat pilates last night. Wow, it is hard & I have a long ways to go until I will be able to do all of the exercises. But I bet I’ll have some good core muscles when I get there!
