That’s a very impressive number of miles, MOWC!

My breakfast game is a little interesting today…or weird???

I made some fresh cauliflower last night for dinner. I steam it, mash it a bit and add a little butter and shredded cheddar for some flavor. I had extra so I put it in a container and this morning I cooked an egg over the top of it w/salt and pepper. It’s sort of delicious and filling! Kind of like fried rice or something - but no rice!

These look interesting. Anyone ever tried the first version?

abasket – that sounds yummy! And satisfying. I’ll have to try that!

MOWC – that’s a lot of miles! Is that your norm (roughly 40 miles/week)? Or are you getting ready for a race? I had to work up to 40 miles/week very very gradually.

I can no longer run 40 mile weeks. I gave that up in about 2013. It was just too much for me. I have been shooting for 35-36 mile weeks, and to be honest, that is also too much. Next year I am going to back it down a little more. This year I should hit over 1800 miles and I think 1600 is more realistic. I’m wearing myself out, and it leaves almost no room for cross training since I have a day job… What you get in a month can depend on how many weekends in the month, whether you had to taper for a race, whether you had a longer run every weekend- things like that. October was one of my highest months this year.

If you have time, watch this short video about the Swim/Run event my son did in NC last weekend. I’m glad I didn’t see this before he did it! He was assigned a partner since his partner got injured. You do it as a team and you can be tethered together to make sure you don’t violate the rule of being within 10 feel of each other. He had an older partner who is an ultra-marathoner. The guy must have been pretty good since my son didn’t complain about him! It’s a gorgeous and fascinating setting- but looks C R A Z Y!!

I give you a lot of credit, MOWC. 35 miles a week is a lot given that you work full time and (I believe) travel for work too! Getting up in the dark to fit a run in is true dedication.

Thanks. It is very, very hard to get up in the dark. I suspect I’ll be doing more after work or at lunch as the days get shorter…

I found your son’s next event, MOWC. My daughter (jokingly) suggested it could be my next endeavor.

Oh God. I hope he doesn’t know about it!

Hey all, can I pick your brains about a fitness tracker? I need it to track heart rate and sleep- those are my two big ones. I am leaning towards a Fitbit Charge 2 but wanted to ask before I bought.

Also, if anyone knows of any that track heart rate and are water proof, even better!

PS: For lots of reasons, I do not want to wear a chest strap. The wrist tracker is good enough for me.

The wrist trackers are generally not waterproof, I think. The FitBits are not very accurate at all for HR, so if accuracy matters, that is probably not the device for you. In fact, there is litigation over the HR claims. I love my FitBit Alta, but it doesn’t do HR. For HR and steps, Garmin 235 is great, but it is probably overkill for what you need since it is GPS.

Look at the Mio devices and see if they track steps. I bet they do, and their HR wrist technology is pretty good.

Thanks, MOWC. Yes, the HR accuracy is what’s important to me.

There isn’t really a good wrist ot chest or whatever simple sleep tracker out there. I would stick with whatever tech gives you the most accurate HR reading. As far as waterproof goes, look for devices geared to triathletes. MOfWC’s suggestion of Mio and Garmin 235 are good.

Garmin 235 is waterproof. I’ve worn my swimming multiple times.

My husband bought a Mio FUSE to wear while cycling–it reports his heart rate to his phone, but I don’t know anything about its ability to sleep track.

I’ve been wearing a Fitbit Flex 2, which is great for steps, small and unobtrusive (and reports the same number of steps as my Garmin 235). It counts swimming laps and its sleep tracking seems to be accurate as well. No heart rate.

How about this device?

I should clarify what I said early: accuracy matters but it doesn’t need to be super accurate. Basically, I want to see if there are things that are triggering my heart rate to go higher or lower (I am still having heart problems and my resting heart rate is in the 100s even on a beta blocker and another heart medicine). Accurate within about 5-10 bpm is what I’m aiming for.

I don’t think you can count on the FitBit to be within that accuracy range.

Thanks. I’ve ruled out FitBit. I’m looking at the Mios and Garmins.

I already have a fairly chunky medical alert bracelet that I wear so I’m hoping for a band on the smaller side but I’ll take whatever has the best accuracy.

@romanigypsyeyes , shouldn’t your doc be able to recommend or even perhaps prescribe something that will do the things you need? Surely if they have concerns about your HR (and other patients of theirs) they have a product that they recommend…??
