Bunsen- where are you and how are you doing?
Plantmom and 2015- Are you sore today? I wasn’t all that sore yesterday from my race (but tired) but my legs are a little more sore today.

Sore, yes. Wore my medal to work just so when I took 20 minutes to go down the subway stairs people would cut me some slack. Fiancee said to use ice last night; couldn’t.
PlantMom – how are you feeling?
I am trying to figure out some running goals/strategy. I am not going to continue with the Prolia bone density injections- my second one is due in December. I just don’t think I have felt good since I got the shot in June. I’m not thrilled with the potential side effects and I’m going to take my chances.
I am starting to get marathon fever again, but I’m not excited about the long runs and increased mileage. If I can run a half, I am a believer in being able to finish a marathon without horrific distress with a 15 and a 17 mile run between the half and the marathon. I have some concerns since I don’t seem to be able to enter low key local races of much shorter distances without having tremendous anxiety, so there’s that issue…
That said, I turn 65 next September, so the October Twin Cities (NMinn- your place…) would be perfect for my new age group. My daughter wants to run it and it’s the meetup for the women’s running group (although they are mad at me…). My goal would be to NOT care about my time and to run/walk to ensure a finish. I would shoot for between 4:45 and 5 hours. Ugh- that is a long time to be out there.
I would want to do a “practice” race and I have had Halfield and McCoy on my list for awhile. It is in June and is in West VA/Kentucky and is extremely challenging but, apparently, one of the best run events in the country and really fun. I wouldn’t feel any time pressure and I would still be 64. It would just be hard. Very hard. It’s only a 6 hour drive away, though. Sabaray- it would be hot, but they have a half marathon…not too far of a drive for you! Anyone else???
Just thinking out loud…
Hi all! Have been extremely BUSY with too many things to list. We are trying to figure out whether we want to move (locally!) and where, plus the end of the year means a ton of work for me because of other folks’ corporate goals.
Add some classes into the mix and some exams, and it gets too complicated!
Still not 100%. The doctors are busy this time of the year, so I have to wait long time for the scheduled evals. Will keep you all posted! Meanwhile, I started doing some unusual PT and myofascial release therapy. Too early to say if this is working, but it is not making the things worse for sure!
Bunsen, wish things were better! Glad to hear you’re doing some therapy to help.
I looked at the website -
Are you trying to kill me? LOL. Seriously though, it’s supposed to be a great race with tons of support from the community - that’s an easy drive for me and I would definitely consider meeting you there.
I haven’t given up on the full. I did it once, I can do it again. This year has just been an unusual one but I am finally feeling like my old self again, but doing a few halfs is probably a good idea. I am thinking my next marathon attempt if all goes well will be Shamrock in 2017.
That would be SO much fun! Don’t they have 2 halfs back to back or something so the 50 state half-ers can get two states? It just sounds like a really fun event to me- except for the part about running 26.2 miles.
Bunsen- good to hear from you. I wish you could get back to normal! Ugh, moving! It’s exciting but hard. Keep us posted!
Glad to hear from BB too. Even THINKING about moving is stressful! Are you still looking at places other than single family homes???
We are trying all options at this point. My commute from where we live is getting close to 2 hours one way, and it is really tiring. Mr. enjoys his 15 min commute and will be happy to add another 15 min so I could lose 1- 1.5 hours. We figured any money we put into this move will be money paid to add years to my life. Or so I think.
We are trying to stage the move so there will be no contingencies, and we will sell the home only after we move. Our holding costs are only T&I and some utilities at this point.
A 2 hour commute is unbelievable to me! Yes, you will be given so much life back if you can shorten that in some way!
That’s a horrible commute! I didn’t know you were doing that!
Thanks abasket. I am glad Mr. is now on board about this move. It was not so bad… Until the latest series of really dumb traffic and transit revisions. But that is a topic of another thread!
2 hours??? Please, move. I have a coworker who commutes from a place that takes 1.5 hours to get to on a good day. I don’t even want to know her commute. She must really enjoy our job. I know I wouldn’t do it for that commute.
My workout today has me feeling on top of the world. Progress all around. It’s amazing what bodies can do. Two months ago, just barely got 135 on my back and now I’m able to do working set at 155. My hip is healed and feeling good.
I never thought I’d say this but I’m cutting back on my leg days and switching one of them out for a HIIT day + arms + core. I am pretty proud of the program I made for myself as I’ve seen great results. I wish I could tell this to thousands of young women out there that you can do it yourself and you don’t need to buy some Instagram girl’s program! We have access to the internet! Research, eperiment, reflect, repeat.
Good luck on your move, Bunsen. That is a terrible commute.
It used to take one bus, which I was very happy about. I could sit and read. Now it takes 3 buses, and the connections are not ideal.
I have a 20 minute commute with just 2 interstate exits, and I complain about it! If there is a wreck (frequent), it can really take a lot longer.
Two ends of the spectrum! Sabaray walking through the leaves on the way to work this morning and BB traveling long enought to watch a full length movie - something I don’t often have the patience to even do in my living room!
It’s just gorgeous today - I know these days are numbered here. Heading out for some raking and other gardening duties and if I can get it in, a walk or run later - just because I can!
@BunsenBurner – am I remembering correctly that it was your house that had ten trees on the roof back in one of the windstorms? If so, I’m not surprised that your commute has become impossible. The last time I was up that way, it was awful even in the middle of the day. People complain about how much worse the Portland traffic has gotten now that we’re not in a recession, but it’s never been THAT bad! Good luck with the move!
@MomofWildChild – every time I read about your race anxiety, I wonder WHY… you’ve done so many races over the years, you have your streak, it’s obviously not about the running part! I have no suggestions, just sympathy. I get a fluttery stomach before races (ginger chews help) but I enjoy races and love the challenge of really pushing myself (other than my standard moment of “what the he** was I thinking?!”). I do think scheduling a big race for right after the age-group change is a great idea, and an October marathon and a plan to run-walk sounds good to me. Of course, I’ve long since decided never to do a marathon, so I really can’t offer advice.
I had decided my big challenge for next year would be a 15-mile 3000-foot-gain trail run in May, but now a family wedding has been scheduled–on the east coast–for the day before, so I’m balancing the family commitment with the personal goal. There’s a half-marathon trail run here in Portland, on trails I’m familiar with, two weeks later, so I may switch to that goal instead and go to the wedding; it’s my sister’s granddaughter, so also a chance to see lots of family I don’t see that often.
My other big goal for next summer is a women-only sprint triathlon at the end of August; I did it last summer and was impressed with the management of the event and enjoyed it. The next day, there’s a co-ed Olympic-distance triathlon, same course, and DH talked me into a recruiting a friend to do it as a team. She swims (and she’s fast, swims 2 miles in an hour without pushing herself) (ex-Navy-trained rescue diver); DH bikes (and he’s fast); I run (oh well, two of three’s not bad). We’re signed up, now I have to train… I found last year that the tri-training really helped with preventing a) boredom and b) injury.
BunsenBurner – that’s a brutal commute! I was commuting almost 2 hours when kids were young and we moved to cut mine in half. I hope the timing works out well for you with buying and selling. It sounds like you’re in a good spot to do that since your overhead is low where you live.
That’s rough, BB. I don’t know how you can do that kind of commute. Hope you find a new place, soon.
My legs are sore today, but not in a bad way. I can feel muscle aches from the tops of my legs and hips, down through the quads and a little in the calves. My ankle feels normal though, as do my knees, so I think I’m going to be okay! The worst problem I had yesterday, besides an upset stomach after I got home, was a horrendous case of restless legs last night. I drank a glass of wine, medicated, and went to sleep early, although DH told me I tossed and turned all night.
I took a gentle walk today–beautiful, sunny, about 80 degrees. At the end of my walk, when the sun was really warming me up, I thought how thankful I was after all for the early race start. Warm external temperatures are one thing, but adding the sun, especially in the south, just takes the body temperatures up a notch.
