We had our first morning of the season at 40 something degrees. I had planned a longer run but I had problems sleeping last night, a dead Garmin, and a late start so I settled for 2.5 miles of running sans Garmin. H and I went to see the Magic play the other night. I don’t think I’ve ever been to an NBA game so it was a lot of fun. They even won (not something this team does as regularly as the locals wish). Hopefully we’ll find some cheap seats some day and do that again. Basketball is such an easy spectator sport: no cold or too hot seating in a stadium like Lambeau, shorter game time; not too long of a wait for scores; just rowdy enough fan base. Better late than never for this convert!
I love basketball- mainly college, but I went to Philadelphia pro games ever since I was about 6 years old. Glad you liked the Magic!
Spent the better part of the last 2 days trying to get to vacation place (which is on an island)–all car ferries cancelled because of wind. I have spent too much time in the car and packing/unpacking. Went back home yesterday, so I got to yoga early this morning before leaving again. I did get my steps in just from packing and getting ready to leave. Also registered active 30 active minutes on the Fitbit. Go figure.
I stopped wearing my Fitbit during active exercise and it has been eye opening to see how little activity I get during the workday. I used to think I was getting quite a few steps while at work - lately, not so much! I’ll need to work on that.
Overslept this morning so missed my running group - very cold here this morning and just couldn’t drag out of bed. Did my 30 minute interval workout, tacked on some easy running to get the HR down. My trainer is going on vacation for two weeks, so I think I’m going to do hot yoga again. Doesn’t look like they’re going to have enough people to do the Pilates training, which is disappointing. Studio seems to be shifting their emphasis - still plenty of classes I’d like to take, but unfortunately not at times I can go. Classes I could go to - prenatal? That ship sailed a long time ago.
Safe travels MOWC - very jealous of your trip! Beautiful part of the country. Bromfield, I hope you finally made it!
Thanks! I’ve been getting s few strange looks at work. I think a few people have noticed my FirBit walks around the halls! It isn’t that easy to get 4-5K steps during the day at work!
2.1 of the planned 3.miles this morning- inside. I didn’t have time for any more before the flight.
I do the FitBit walks at work, too. I’m sure some people wonder what I do all day besides walk by their workstations!
I would get lots of steps if I smoked! They have to go a long way to the outside smoking area!
A couple of weeks ago I was having a conversation with a co-worker who’s desk area is by the door out of our office space. She was complaining that she needs to “do something” to get some activity. I came clean and told her - “see my watch? It’s a Fitbit - you will notice that I often walk by your desk and out the door a few times a day between :50-:00 of the hour - it’s because I need to get my 250 steps to get credit for the hour!” We have a private little look now - every time I head out that door after the :50 of the hour!!!
As far as the activity minutes on a Fitbit, I think that’s a setting right? So you can set it to count activity every time your are active for at least a certain amount of minutes - like 10 or 15+ or whatever you set it at.
I’m lucky to be a workplace where I can walk inside or out no problem along paths, hallways, tunnels, etc. for 10,15, or 20 minutes if I have the time. And of course a fitness center here too - even to just go walk the track for a bit. That also means no excuses!!!
Our office is small so I would get a lot of looks! There are still people who smoke - evidently it’s fine for them to take smoke breaks but if I took a walk break around the block it would be frowned upon. They already think I’m crazy enough for all the running. I adjusted my settings for active hours and am really going to try and get those 250 steps every hour for the rest of the month.
I noticed a couple “streak” challenges for the Thanksgiving to New Year’s period . Maybe a focus on those extra daytime steps is a good “streak” goal for that!
40 minutes on the Cybex Arc + 2 mile bike ride. My gym has several Expresso bikes, in addition to regular and recumbent bikes. The Expresso bikes have various routes you can ride, with accompanying scenery on the screen. You “steer” the bike, change gears for going up and down hills, etc. It’s been forever since I’ve done any sort of bike riding; no doubt I’ll feel that tomorrow.
I just made arrangements to board our pup over Thanksgiving. Ideally we only need “daycare,” but the place isn’t actually open for pick-ups and drop-offs on Thursday. So, I’ll bring her tomorrow evening and get her first thing Friday morning. H is going to be upset, since we normally bring her with us to his B & SIL’s for the day. BUT, what that actually means is I’m the one in charge of her since H disappears into the LR with all the guys to nap/watch football. Our pup is not calm and can be somewhat of a pest. (Good thing she’s cute!) Plus, this year there will be a couple of babies and a toddler, so who needs a dog to add to the chaos? I. for one, will have a much more enjoyable holiday!
I’m definitely not as motivated as before. Signed up for a short race this Saturday.
I think it’s a challenging time of year - particularly when you’ve trained long and hard for something, it’s like, okay, now what? I do find the mini challenges to be helpful if you’re a goal oriented person. Nice little communities spring up there too! I’m doing the RW streak - even if it’s only a mile a day some days!
^^Yep, that’s one of the streaks I saw - the RW mile a day.
One loop through the sanctuary at our synagogue is 225 steps, or 1/10 of a mile. Ask me how I know!
Our offices have a gigantic circular hall - it definitely helps to get my steps in.
Okay, got a question for the experts, here. My husband was trying to find some sort of program where you monitor things closely (ie eating the right stuff/learning what you should be eating), monitoring exercise, something where you are held accountable. He has mentioned consulting with a nutritionist, I say, meh, find an informative book to read. He also was considering this program we always hear advertised in Seattle, 30/10 weight loss for life. I read about it, and it sounds like you’re paying a great deal for prepackaged meals, requires massive willpower, and is for people who need to lose a lot of weight (they’d laugh his lean muscled 142 pound butt right out the door).
I personally think he doesn’t need a thing except for perhaps a personal trainer (if that), and maybe a little information about eating healthier. Maybe some sort of online program where he could track his progress and talk with other ultra fit competitive athletes would be good.
For me, maybe the same thing (except for the ultra fit part). Obviously this thread is awesome, however I’m thinking about something more where you input every single exercise/food you eat. Any ideas for us? Thanks!
My fitness pal. Simple free easy. It’s the only thing my H thinks helps him lose weight, to write down everything he puts in his mouth and every bit of exercise.
Will look into that. Thanks, deb!
