In my 2nd life I want to be Wild Child.
I think it’s the Wallaby kefir I have seen. Sounds right.
And BB I meant to ask earlier, is your class really about food? Interesting???
My kids former elementary school started something like this after they had left. I believe it was an optional thing at lunch. Walking or running, it’s a great idea. I’ll bet they have seen a positive change in classroom behavior too.
“And BB I meant to ask earlier, is your class really about food? Interesting???”
Yup. USDA and FDA and bad, nasty, deadly foods.
Hope you feel better soon, plantmom.
I have never tried kefir and until reading the posts here wasn’t sure what it actually was. What little milk (which I don’t care for) I consume is lactose free. I like yogurt, but it doesn’t like my stomach. So I shy away from anything like that.
I wanted to post this article yesterday but of course couldn’t find it after I’d read it. In any event, the author outlines many strategies I’ve used to maintain weight loss. He even talks about doughnuts!
^^Brave guy. But I’m sure he feels better for it - inside and out.
I think it’s also ok to give others “permission” to indulge when you are not - I mean, not all the time (listening husband?!) but to say when the donuts are brought in “oh man, I love donuts but didn’t plan for one in my food log this week - but you go ahead and enjoy!” or “I do love donuts, but I’m just better off not having a bite or I can’t hold back - but you guys should enjoy them!”. So it puts the “blame” so to speak on your own food insecurities, doesn’t pin it as “I want to be healthy but you don’t so go ahead and fill yourself up with sugar!”
This is a good topic. As we’ve discussed, so much of our social lives, our means of expressing appreciation and our ways to comfort ourselves revolve around food. At my company, our management shows appreciation to the workforce by bringing in loads of cupcakes, donuts, Chik Filet biscuits and the like. People love it, but it sure doesn’t help with the “health and fitness initiative”! I find I can resist store bought cake or so-so donuts (there aren’t many in that category, unfortunately), but if some really good independent donut shop donuts show up, all bets are off. As I said in the other thread, I seem to have a mentality of fearing I will never see this food item again!
2.5 miles this morning- 31 degrees and clear. I have a 6K (about 4 mile) race in the morning which isn’t particularly important to me but is hilly, so I did a little bit of a taper.
Love that article, @sabaray, and love his no sugar-coating approach, just like idad’s. Miss him.
Longish out/back walk yesterday (5 miles). Off today to do my first stair climb. A local church is opening its bell tower (91 steps)–$5 to climb to the top.
Good to hear you are on the mend after seeing the doctor, Plantmom.
My son-in-law loves kefir–he buys it from Whole Foods. The one he buys reminds me of strawberry yogurt. Don’t know the brand–I pretty much stopped eating dairy this year, except for light cream in my coffee and ice cream (a special treat). I rarely have milk, yogurt or cheese.
That’s a good morning run. I can manage 7 miles before work maybe 1-2x/week and it makes me get into work later than I’d like. I couldn’t wake up and be somewhere at 5!
PlantMom and dmd77 – hope you are both on the mend.
abasket – if you can’t get the shower in they probably won’t care. Haircut always makes me feel better.
Just signed up for the Shamrock Shuffle (8K) in Chicago in April! Running with a friend who runs it yearly - she says I’ll love it! (as much as you can love anything with like 40K people!) Probably my first race in 2017 .
Woo hoo abasket! That’s a great way to stay motivated (and have fun).
I had a good 3.3 mile run this morning with Back on My Feet. The coach this morning wanted us to do negative splits. A couple wiseguys in the group decided that meant you say all the negative things you can think of while you are running - “it’s so cold!”, “it’s way too early to be running!”, “isn’t it time to turn around yet?”, etc. etc. It got to be pretty hilarious as everyone was trying to come up with more and more negative whiny things to say. In spite of all that, we did do a good job of running negative splits as each of the 3 miles was 25 seconds faster than the previous one. So it was a pretty good overall pace.
I had not run in a week and my knee was really hurting by the end of the run. I definitely feel it this afternoon, especially when I go down stairs. I am hoping it will be OK for tomorrow’s race. It’s only a 5 mile race so that shouldn’t be too bad if I take it a little slower than usual. I am mentally prepared for walking part of it if I need to. I sure did need that run this morning, though. I have been so cranky the last few days! I am in much better spirits today!
Plantmom-I am glad you are on the mend now. It sounds as if you were in bad shape - that’s a shame, especially over the holiday weekend.
I am able to avoid the food in the office pretty easily. It’s the Christmas cookies and other goodies that I bake that are my downfall this time of year. I am my own worst enemy!
I hate hearing that your knee is still giving you trouble, C3Baker, but the “negative” run actually sounds very fun.
@abasket, your race sounds fun! I am thinking of entering the lottery for the Cherry Blossom ten miler. I need to figure out the rest of my spring calendar - but the one race (also a ten miler) I really want to do hasn’t announced the date yet.
I ran this morning! A whole two miles with the dog (who was thrilled to be out there)! Then I coughed for a while. But I ran! Feeling much better.
For anyone still looking for a race, here is a list of 100 “world’s best races”:
Knee is back to normal (for a soon to be 60 year old knee.) Pace is improving. Starting intervals again and feeling fast.
Will be having my favorite birthday meal next week—fish sticks and french fries. My Mom was the packaged food queen. I always considered fish sticks as “real” fish and didn’t try fish well into my teens.
