Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I have a really good Lulu hat that is open at the top so you can scrunch it down for your head to breathe or fold it over on the top to close it off. My daughter thought it was stupid, but I love it!

@CBBBlinker – thanks! Next time I’m there I will definitely check it out! If you ever need restaurant tips in Manhattan, let me know!

I have a law firm event tonight with wine, snacks and pedicures so I slid on out of the office mid-afternoon down to the gym for 2 miles on the dreadmill. The treadmills here are faster than mine at home. Gets me back to work sooner!

^^ Good job and way to figure out a way to fit things in!

I just returned from my work fitness facility. This time of the afternoon there is a part of the facility that is reserved for post-discharge cardiac patients. Not freshly discharged but with a history and recommendations to start a guided exercise program. People of all ages. Today as I was finishing my workout of track/row/treadmill - and was on the treadmill - I was really watching some of these people walking around the track. Some older. Some younger than me for sure. But I have to tell you, they inspired me. I am lucky to be on the fitness train because I want to be - not because an life threatening event made me take notice. No matter their pace, their distance or their skill - you can see the motivation as they make their way through their program. I really kind of had a moment on that freakin-hated treadmill!

Remember to count your blessings not just your miles, repetitions or carbs!

What a great post and reminder, abasket! I try to never lose sight of the fact that I am able to run and do the active things I love. On our trip to Santa Fe over Thanksgiving, my daughter said that one great thing about her fitness is that it lets her (and her husband) do all the things they want to do when they travel. They can hike, walk around the cities they visit, climb up stairs in cathedrals and other sites and generally have the stamina to make the most of their trips.

I always give thanks as I begin each run. I never want to take it for granted.

Life begins at 60!

Thanks for the list MNK!

I have many friends my age (and younger) who can not be active due to serious health issues. I am grateful that at almost 60 ( love it, Ohio) that I am able to run, walk a lot and practice yoga. I am probably in the best shape of my life right now. It’s a lot of work but I am glad I am able to do it.

FallGirl - yes I am thankful for my health. I am grateful that I can do my running and physical activity at a high level. I don’t take it for granted.

I too am in the best shape of my life. Unfortunately, slower than I was at 18! I do work harder though.

I just don’t like that I get so darned TIRED!!! I feel like I’ve turned into my parents (when they were alive) and by after dinner all I want to do is sit on the bed and watch TV! I do love my job, but it isn’t easy and it is sort of the equivalent of being an air traffic controller in the legal world! I’m pretty worn out by the end of the day.

3 miles this morning out in the gloomy cold. I didn’t run outside at all yesterday, so I was glad to get out in the fresh air.

Nice morning here and I once again tackled the hill - felt really, really good. I am just a bit off my all-time average on that route and have shaved 1:30 off my pace since resuming that route. Went to yoga - and I do still hate yoga - but need to work on flexibility, so that’s a good place to do it.

I hear everyone on being tired. I don’t know how Michael keeps the hours he does - hopefully he’s getting more rest now!

Way to go on the hill!

The combo of increased workload trying to catch up/get ahead before holiday days off, the cold weather, the increased darkness - all leads to that evening “tired”.

I worked from home today - enjoyable! On my lunch “break” I took a good walk with pup and cut my neighbors grass (to pick up the last of her leaves) for the last time this year - that will be my exercise for the day likely! That and a little MK weight work tonight. It was sunny but 35 degrees and a bit of a wind!

Just a tad under a 3.8 mile run. I SOOOO did not want to run this morning! I took 1 extra walking break, BUT, since I was really considering skipping the gym and just going to Starbucks to drink coffee and read, I count it as a win! Just back from a pup walk, and tonight we’re headed out to a holiday party, which means walking to and from the T. Lots of steps today.

I ran 3.3 miles last night at a slower pace but my knee was hurting quite a bit. I iced it afterwards and that helped a lot.

I hear you on being tired, MOWC. I am exhausted way too often and feel as if I can’t get everything done. I have been doing this for 33 years in a really demanding job and I’m just tired. I know that you are 9 years older than I am and I really admire your stamina. I know that I don’t have it in me to do this another 9 years. My job has always been more demanding than H’s and he doesn’t get where I am coming from. It makes the retirement planning discussions difficult.

I am really glad to hear how well your hill run went, sabaray! It’s really great that you’ve shown so much improvement on your pace!

All whining aside, I am extremely grateful for my health. All of my family dies young from cancer and I’m acutely aware that I am beating the odds at this point. (H’s family lives forever so that’s another reason the retirement planning discussions are challenging)

I’m worried about your knee C3! - should you get it checked out? To avoid any permanent or longer lasting injury?

The “C” word is a very scaring word. It seems that not many of our families are untouched. Keep beating those odds. <3

One thing I do- for ME… I do not stay in the office nearly as much as many (most?) of my co-workers throughout the company. I am later to arrive and earlier to leave at the end of the day. I could not have pulled that off earlier in my career, and, fortunately, my boss is not one who requires “face time”. I just simply don’t like really long days. The trade off is that I am almost always available and check and respond to email (and calls) all evening, first thing when I wake up, when I’m getting ready for work and on vacation. I consider myself always on the clock to a great extent. This isn’t required of me, but I feel it allows me to do my job better and to pace myself better. I get to work at about 8:40 (some here arrive at 6:30), but I might do some calls on the way. I guess the downside is I don’t get many mental breaks, but I like getting home and being on the treadmill by 6:15 pm or so instead of 7. If I had to be here from 8 to 6 I’m not sure I could hold up- at least not with all the running I like to do!

I’m with you MOWC, that’s kind of the way I’m practicing law now too. Plus my library at home is configured with all the technology I need to do everything I could do in the office except grab a physical file. Monday’s Wednesday’s and Friday’s I get into the office at about 10 or reserve those days for client meetings. I leave by 3:45 to get home, start my workout and then train fitness clients until 8:30 at which point I finish my workout, eat dinner, check my email and go to bed by 12:00. Tuesdays and Thursdays I try to do legal work from home, train fitness clients during the day and in the evening, taking time out st some point to do my cycling workouts. The upside to all of this is the flexibility I have but the downside is that I return phone calls or answer emails at night or on weekends.

yeah, sabaray, I am trying to get more sleep - with mixed success :). There are times when I’m working in my library that I find myself taking a little nap, lol. And ohio, fitness after 60 does continue to be a blast, testing my limits, still trying to improve. The toughest part is recognizing that more recovery time is needed. Monday, I did a routine that included a heavy 5x5 set of barbell squats and a very heavy 1x5 set of deadlifts. Tuesday was my day to do a high intensity indoor structured wattage ride. My legs and hips were still cooked from Monday so I did an indoor structured endurance ride instead. Today I will lift again with more squats at heavier weights but no deadlifts. I just hope tomorrow I can handle the high intensity interval indoor ride. The toughest thing tonight, though, is that I got home too late to do any of my Wright routine so I won’t be able to start it until 8:45 which is really too late for an 1 3/4 hr routine. So there goes all my sleep resolutions again sabaray!

I rarely see midnight- and if I do, it isn’t by choice! I try to go to sleep at 10 or 10:30 at the latest. I wake up at 5 or 5:30 but don’t like to get out of bed until 6 or so.

@C3Baker, it sounds like your injured knee is asking you to give it some rest. Please listen to it. No more running for a while. Get it checked out by a doc - if you need a referral to a PT - or go to a sports medicine clinic that is familiar with runners’ injuries. Please scratch that race you planned the next weekend. I did not run on my injured knee for several months and then started getting back into running with a CEP brace… It was a wise decision - I was able to BQ again.
