I try for a PM bedtime as I am up between 5-5:30. Not sure if my being more tired than I used to be is a result of my being older or my having an old dog who wakes me up. Probably both.
I had a somewhat frustrating swim yesterday – tried a new cap that was too big, which meant my goggles didn’t fit right, which meant they leaked. Hate leaky goggles.
Today was yoga, and a long walk there and back.
I am so impressed with those of you who work full time and keep to a rigorous workout schedule. When I worked, I managed to exercise but certainly not as diligently or as frequently as I do now, as a retired person.
I’m always more tired in November and December, because of the reduced daylight, grey skies and cold temps.
I have some workday flexibility since I own my own business. But feel like MOWC in terms of always being on call. When you have clients you have to respond immediately. I’m going to try and reduce work hours in 2017 to train more.
C3baker - the knee thing concerns me. Is it patella femoral pain? Meniscus? Art and Graston helped me. Along with cross training and only running on the AlterG.
I used kinesio tape for a month to help with knee alignment. I also got out of my cushion adidas and went back to racing flats. My chiro thought they were causing to much wobble or instability. I’ve been pain free for 2 weeks.
Challenging six miles this morning - I’m working hard to get back on pace with my running group, so am really pushing myself. We’re supposed to get an “Arctic blast” - doesn’t that sound lovely?- so Saturday’s long run will likely be on the shorter side.
Tomorrow will be a rest day for me - I need to do more cross-training but think I’ll do that on Tuesdays going forward. I still have a ton of things to do before Christmas - I need a wife or something. Hope everyone’s aches and pains subside.
45 minutes on the Arc + 2.9 miles on the Expresso bike.
My mother had the “triple whammy” of allergies, asthma and eczema. The life-long asthma resulted in COPD toward the end of her life. When my brothers and I were young, I remember her saying she was so glad none of us inherited her issues. I’m glad, too – although I know in the scheme of life, there are many, many worse health problems. Even when I take breaks from working out or overindulge in less-the-healthy food, I always get back into the routine. Without patting myself too much on the back, it’s events like my recent HS reunion that let me know for sure I’m making the right choices. So many of my classmates look like heck and have lots and lots of health issues.
^^ Agree on the reunions to make you appreciate your own success. We’ve lost a lot of classmates and many more have serious weight and health issues. It’s sad, but much (not all) is preventable.
We are also getting the Arctic blast and part of it was here this morning. 32 degrees. 3.4 miles for me. My husband was very sick all night (unusual for him) and I didn’t get much sleep. It’s a stomach bug and I sure hope I don’t get it. I was pretty worried about him because at 71, as he said, you don’t have much in reserve and he was getting dizzy and dehydrated. I stayed home a little while this morning to make sure he was OK- and I think it is winding down.
Anyone try Yogalates??? Something new at one of our fitness centers. (new to me!!)
“Yogalates is a dynamic workout style combining the core-firming benefits of Pilates and the flexibility of yoga,” “Additionally, it adds elements of strength training to sculpt, define and stretch you into shape.”
Designed for all fitness levels, Yogalates omits jumps and running to be easier on the joints, but adds dynamic poses and body weight resistance to create a “calorie-torching workout accessible to all body types and fitness levels,”
I’d try it.
Sounds like fun, abasket! Please try this and report on it!
MOfWC, hope your H quickly recovers from whatever hit him, and you escape getting the bug.
It is 22 degrees here this morning. Ugh. My deck looks like frozen tundra, and the roads and walkways are very slippery even though it has not rained/snowed in 2 days. On the one hand, I am glad that I am stuck at home studying, on the other hand, I am getting cabin fever!
Unfortunately I don’t belong to the fitness center offering Yogalates - but maybe mine will copy the idea!
Missed about Mr. MOWC not feeling good - time to carry a can of Lysol around the house!!
Have you had snow this year BB? “It” is in the forecast for us the next several days. I am counting my blessings for every run or pup walk with clear sidewalks…seriously thinking about getting some snow cleats for traction - not for running but for pup walks which happen daily regardless of the weather - I SO worry about falling! Any recommendations on cleats for traction?
Really seems to be the season for maladies, injuries and assorted medical stuff. We’ve had our share on this thread, my mother had a mastectomy a week ago, my cycling training partner’s 89 yo father fell of a ladder trying to go up to the roof to hang decorations and is in the hospital and I’ve been at the hospital all day with my father who is being admitted through the er for a determination of whether he has some kind of infection that caused his cognition to go looney tunes. Everyone be careful in this weather and keep persevering!
abasket, i don’t know if you have a corepower studio by you but their classes have that same yoga/pilates fusion and I’m obsessed. It’s such a great way to combine core with relaxation. Hope you enjoy!
i’m sorry about the maladies, injuries and assorted medical stuff, MKat.
Took this morning’s run over to a cute neighborhood near me and since i was hoping to stop at one of its cute coffeeshops afterward, took my phone with me. 3 miles in, realize the phone’s not in my pocket. Spend a half hour re-tracing/re-running my steps and…it was on my bed the whole time. That’s what I get for going away from the lakefront trail
Trying Crossfit tomorrow, wish me luck!
Sorry, Michael! That’s a lot.
That’s an awful lot to be dealing with, Michael - so sorry.
@abasket, I have Yaktrax that I use for pup walks. I have an old pair of shoes that I just leave them on. They make a variety of models but mine are great if the conditions are icy.
Thank you Sabaray - I don’t want to fall!
MK, what a full plate. I wish healing to your Mom and fast answers for your Dad. And prayers for your friend’s Dad - 89 and on a ladder for Christmas decorations! I have been wondering…how is the newest little member of your family doing?! Bet totally adorable!
@writeandrun , I can imagine your face when you saw your phone on your bed - all that panic! I’ll keep an eye and ear out for some classes - the New Year will bring new stuff to the area I’m sure.
YakTrax are great but you definitely don’t want to move them around from shoe to shoe. That’s really a pain.
Michael, so sorry you have so much on your shoulders.
abasket, we get promises of the “s” stuff coming down any minute now. Yuck. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will not happen. After my finals, the “s” stuff is welcome.
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. My mother is a strong lady who is coping well. My father had a core temperature of 93 for reasons undetermined but now is up to 97.5, eating and demanding large quantities of red wine from the hospital nutrition staff and I managed to do my 5x5 heavy weight routine tonight without dropping anything on my head (love my new power rack) so all’s relatively under control. And my granddaughter will be 9 months old tomorrow and is starting to repeat word sounds; I can’t believe how fast she is growing.
Very limited study supporting this article, but there is something to those 250 steps an hour!
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/09/well/move/keep-it-moving.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur
9 months already! Wasn’t she just born like 3 months ago?! Nothing like babbling to draw in the doting grandparents! Shower that baby with talking, singing, playing and reading! (my day job, healthy child development and literacy
)
Very limited but very interesting that article. I would love to see a larger group under similar conditions. I’m kind of stunned that they could also get 17,000 steps while sitting for 8 hours and then presumably sleeping for 7 or so.
A cold and snowy day today! I guess winter is here for real. This morning was a great 3.3 mile run with Back on My Feet and my knee isn’t bothering me. I have really cut back on running - last week was only 11 miles total, and this week I’ve only put in 6.5 miles so far. I am cautiously optimistic that I’m on the mend.
Michael - so sorry to hear about the health issues, that is a lot all at once. Issues with the elderly are scary. I hope things straighten out with your Dad.
Santa will be bringing running YakTrax, I am hoping they will helpful. The pavement was somewhat icy this morning and I know there are many more mornings like this ahead.
