Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I didn’t wimp out and ran 5 outside in the cold. Cold starting out. Hot in the middle. Cold, sweaty and soaked at the end. Never know how to dress below 30 degrees.

It was 16 degrees here this morning - 7.2 miles. Wore the First Mile tech tight and my Lulu down hoodie over a t-shirt. Definitely warm enough! Had some ice here too but luckily no falls. Long day Christmas shopping with a party to attend tonight.

My husband is still sick. This is just SO unusual for our household. He finally went to the walk-in clinic and they gave him something stronger than Imodium and told him no solid food until he is doing better. He has lost 7 pounds since Wednesday. I’m glad we really didn’t have any big social events this weekend.

OMG, hope he will get better soon.

Wow, MOWC, That’s terrible! Lots of fluid loss?

I’m feeling really wimpy lately - I just can’t deal with the cold. Don’t know why this year is different - I have the right clothing, I just don’t feel like being outside in the cold and wind. So I’ve been doing all my exercise in the gym. Yesterday I ran 6 miles on the treadmill, today did the elliptical for an hour. I’m enjoying the elliptical a lot lately – I’ve discovered that if I set my Kindle type to really large, I can read a book and exercise hard at the same time (and I know from my heart rate that I’m getting a decent workout).

Congrats to MKat’s son. Hope MoWC’s husband and PlantMom feel better.

That’s a nasty bug he must have - never a good way to lose pounds!

I think sometimes what happens is with the first burst of cold it’s our nature to want to stay inside. After several weeks of this, you finally say - “I MUST get outside!!! I don’t care how cold/snowy/wet/windy it is!!” So I understand @fireandrain !

Thanks, all. The doc said they are seeing a lot of this- and upper respiratory stuff. He just feels really weak. Yes, fluid loss even though he is trying to drink a lot.

Power of suggestion-had to try a Cherry Limeade at Sonic. Delicious!

Congrats Mkat.

MOWC – did they check his magnesium and potassium? One of my previous meds caused serious GI issues w/resulting dehydratration/electrolyte balance and we had to be constantly careful about those levels. Low mag and potassium will make one feel weak, too. If he’s still ill on Monday, I’d make him see his regular doc.

They didn’t do any blood work. I think he just got so messed up from the virus that his bowel is having trouble recovering.

I hope he’s on the mend. Being sick is no fun and especially during the holidays. Poor guy. Poor MOWC.

I hope you H is feeling a bit better MOWC! No fun this time of year.

Did you know that they make a diet cherry limeade? So good, no guilt, I hate to drink my calories. No sonic close to me but when I am near one, that’s what I love to get.

I’ve been slacking (hangs head in shame). I could make a bunch of excuses but really I’ve been lazy. Just slacking. We are getting snow here and as soon as we get enough for the trails to be groomed, I’ll be XC skiing. Can’t wait. I was trying to get H to go to Canada for a weekend getaway but then I priced it out! Oh well, there is plenty of places to go here.

I am feeling wimpy this morning… I’m signed up for a big 5k race, the kind with a staggered start, fancy t-shirt, bus from parking. But it’s 40 degrees (F) and pouring rain, with no letup expected. I’m back in bed, not going. I’ll run later, when I can see where I’m going and maybe the rain is lighter.

We have a couple Sonic’s but it’s not in my habit to stop there - my one memory of a Sonic is visiting Xavier in Cincinnati with my son and being so starved on the drive back home that we stopped at one. He insisted we had to get the tater tots with cheese and chili on top.

2 inches of snow on the ground this morning. Probably a good bit more later. First snow walk with my dog this morning!

I actually do get the Diet Cherry Limeade! If I’m drinking my calories it’s going to involve alcohol (or a milkshake)!

I think he’s doing better this morning. He had a good night and seems to want some food. I don’t think he should eat yet, but he’s going to. I need him to get some strength back so he can put the lights on the tree!

dmd- 40 degree rain is my deal breaker, so don’t feel bad about bailing. That’s just miserable.

My run was terrible. My legs felt like yesterday was the first time I had ever run 9 miles. I was a little puzzled by how dead I was today. In 3.5 miles I bet I stopped 4 times just to take a rest break. No huge deal, but it was a little surprising. I am wondering if doing the 9 mile run in the Topos (felt great) instead of Hokas made a difference in my legs. I wouldn’t be surprised.

I have a friend who is at the end of a 24 hour race called Desert Solstice. It’s on a 1/4 mile track. He is about to make the US 24 hour national team. Can you even imagine? He was around 126 miles or so with about 3 hours to go awhile ago.

Thanks for the support @MomofWildChild . The weather seemed to me to be an invitation to hypothermia. I really will run later.

Sending the get well wishes to your H, MOWC.

MNK- congrats to your S! You need something like this with all you are dealing with.

Ran 3.1 this AM, 27 degrees, but I was plenty warm. As long as the wind isn’t blowing much I’m ok.

@MomofWildChild – I was thinking about your bad run. Are you perhaps coming down with something? Hopefully not the virus your husband has been dealing with. (Is he feeling better? Hope so.)

I did manage to get out and run in my local park. Ended up soaked and chilly but I did run 5 miles with the dog, who clearly appreciated the chance to get out of the house after being confined for several days due to our ice storm. Lots of trees down on the trails and tons of ice pruned tree bits everywhere. Lots of people running with their off-leash dogs (I hate that–there’s an off-leash area, go run THERE!) but we got through it. Of course the sky cleared and we had five minutes of blue sky just after I got home

Good for you getting out in the rain!

I felt OK except for my dead legs. So far (fingers VERY crossed), I don’t think I’m getting what he had. He is a ton better today and has vacuumed the house and got the lights on the tree! And- went to Sam’s. I guess he’s almost back to normal but still not much of an appetite.

Sometimes, though, with really fit people, you can get a little touch of a virus and not really notice it the way normal people would- except your exercise seems harder!
