Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Glad your husband is on the mend, MOWC. I bet he lost a lot of salts which makes you feel so wiped out.

I am in the “finding it tough to get out and run” camp. Wish I had a way to run indoors. I have to be up and out by 6:30 to run before work and it’s so easy to stay under the covers. But did 6 yesterday and 7 today. If I can get 2-3 more runs in between Monday and Friday, I’m good.

PlantMom – hope your sinuses clear up. I carry SudafedSinus with me. That pain is like nothing else.

Oh, I’m feeling so humiliated. I ran into a friend and HE got out and ran the half-marathon that was running at the same time as my 5K, the one that I didn’t run because I did want to deal with the weather. Of course, it did say it was awfully cold and wet, but he did it… No, I don’t regret not going at all. Not really. Not that much.

This morning I was awakened at 2 am by strong winds which must have tripped something because our heat pump was running continuously and there was no need for that. Had a hard time getting back to sleep. Some rain this morning, so skipped running outdoors, but saw two members of our group hitting the pavement, so felt a little guilty. 5 miles and a cooldown on the treadmill. Boring but necessary.

To each his own, but when I see people out running in driving rain and wind or the person I saw running yesterday on the side of the very snow covered slippery, low visability road with the wind blowing…I’m not impressed. It doesn’t show me dedication it shows me bad decision making! My opinion.

Ugh, I feel your pain sabaray. This time of year with the weather, I’m spending entirely too much time riding indoors. Did a 1hr structured wattage ride last night. It’s only the middle of December and already I feel like I’m mentally worn out from indoor training. Gotta keep my eye on the goal though - to start the season stronger than when I ended. It will also be interesting to see whether all the 5x5 squats and deadlifts I’m doing will translate into more power on hills.

My vision is so poor I’m really hesitant to run in low light, wet conditions - hence the treadmill. Driving rain, wind and snow are a no go for anyone in our group! It would have been okay to run, I just couldn’t get my sorry rear out of bed. I’m like you, Michael - I want to start next year stronger than I ended this year. Shouldn’t be too hard for me to do given how things ended!

Next year I’m planning to run a 5k, 10k, ten miler, half and full marathon. Two of the five are already scheduled. Goals like that are good for me.

I was on the fence this morning. To tell if it’s raining at my house (unless it is beating against the window), I have to go fully out onto my back deck- which I did. It wasn’t raining, but it sure seemed like it would any minute and everything was wet. However, it was 50 degrees, so I suited up and ran outside. Wore a very light Oiselle jacket and a cap in case it rained. 3.4 miles done and I’m glad I got outside, since it didn’t rain!

My husband is better. He ate pretty normally yesterday with no problems. He was tired by the end of the day, but slept well last night. I may have dodged a bullet…

I think it’s back to marathoning for me in 2017. It seems like a great idea except in those early mornings when I don’t want to get up. I have my eye on 2 races- Hatfield and McCoy in W VA in June and Minneapolis in October.

So happy to hear that your husband is feeling better. Fingers crossed.

I am hoping that 2017 will treat me better. If the fix I am planning on works, maybe I will be back to running. Mr. commented yesterday that he thought running made me happy. It definitely did!

I’m hoping for the best for you, Bunsen. I know running does SO much to dive the Crazies out of our heads (not entirely- but it helps!)

this is kind of cool: http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/age-grade-calculator

I love age grading!

The newest Runners World has a good review of treadmills and some tips on what to look for- at different price points.

Love age grading and age group medals!

LOVE the 60 age group

My luck ran out. I have the virus. I hope it won’t be as bad as my husband’s. 100 degree fever, chills and one throw up event. Wisely, I’m not attempting my evening treadmill run.

Oh no, MOWC! Hope it’s not as severe and runs it course quickly.

So sorry MOWC.

Darn on the bug MOWC - hope you get a shortened version.

BB, I sincerely hope 2017 will treat you better health/body wise.

So we ended up with 6-8 inches of snow the last couple which turned a little icy. Lovely. I’ll be inside for awhile now as temps aren’t looking good for the next week at least. Tonight, a home workout which consisted of some cardio, lots of squats and lunges and some weights - all to a little good music!

Oh dear, MoWC. I’m so relieved to hear your DH is better but bummed that you have caught the bug. Out and away, darn viruses (hopefully not the hard way)!

I felt better enough physically today to run a bit. I did run/walk for a little over four miles. It warmed up into the 80’s again, so my declining fitness and elevated outdoor temperatures made it seem a little hard. My Garmin told me I need over 3 days of recovery. Yikes! I’m feeling more sluggish and out of shape than I have for 5 years. It was only a little over a month ago that I ran a half marathon. I need new goals, I think.

Oh, remember when I lost my Fitbit Alta in early October? Today I went to get in my husband’s car in the back seat (D2 was in the front)- I looked down and my Fitbit was on the floor! I am totally stunned - we searched that car high and low over and over again. Also, when I first lost it I tried a couple times to see if my app would sync - because that would show me that it was nearby - but it wouldn’t sync!

I have no explanation, but now I have this second Alta. I’m wondering what is going to happen if I try to charge it and restart it - I can’t remember if Fitbit was going to wipe it clean or whatever (the account). I’m thinking I don’t want to try it on my laptop that I usually charge my current one - I don’t want to confuse it!

Need to stay off this thread. Caught the same virus yesterday evening transmitted via the Internet. Feeling better today.

My oldest son is staying with us the next 3 weeks as he recuperates from knee surgery. He had Osgood Schlatter and was complicated by being a baseball catcher. Twice in the last year, his knee cap completely turned sideways. He decided to go with surgery because he couldn’t play basketball, baseball, etc. surgery was pretty intense. They drilled a hole through the knee cap and tied it down with cadaver tendons. Along with that they sawed his tibia and realigned with knee cap with screws because it was 25% out of line with the kneecap and was partly responsible for a lot of his problem. Of course he has resorted back to a 6 year old toddler and my wife and I are at his beck and call. Please pray for us!

Wow, Ohio! That sounds like rough surgery. Good luck to all of you! My son hurt his knee training (sounds bad) and is being pretty surly. He’ll probably need an MRI.

Sorry you caught the bug, too! So far it isn’t nearly as bad as the way my husband’'s started, so maybe I’ll live…
