Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Less beer? That’s crazy talk right there…

Wow. I guess the key is sticking to it. I never can stick to a good eating plan for more than a week. Need something that includes daily banana chocolate chip muffins, wine, and bacon.

Oh, I eat bacon without guilt! The muffin and wine…well…I like being thin more than I like those things. I don’t think of diet as specific food items, I guess - I just try to eat simply and fewer processed foods. When I was training I was definitely guilty of the “I ran 20 miles so I can eat as much as I want” - guess what? You can’t and I’m paying for that now!

Oh my God, if you run 20 miles, you can’t eat what you want? At least for a day? That is so wrong. :open_mouth:

Way to go, sabaray!
My weight was very low this morning (not complaining) from having the virus, even though I really didn’t have stomach issues very much with it. I think I got dehydrated even though I kept my fluids up yesterday. I thought I felt pretty much OK, until I got on the treadmill! Managed 2.2 miles, but my HR was high (another sign I was dehydrated) and I had to keep backing off the pace. I started slow and slowed down from there!

Although- not having any appetite yesterday made me think maybe there is something to this 5-2 plan! Maybe I should get on that thread!

Can’t birve you’re still working out while being sick , MOWC. That is dedicated!

Well- I wouldn’t exactly call it working out. I have a streak of over 529 days, and unless I have a physical injury or surgery, I’m not going to break it if I don’t have to!

Last night was a cold and snowy 3.25 mile run with the running club. I was not looking forward to it because it was so cold and we had gotten a few inches of snow during the day. In the winter, the running club runs out at a sports park that has paths all through the park. It’s a good place to run because there is no traffic but it is basically in a prairie that is totally open so the wind is pretty wicked out there. Fortunately the wind wasn’t too bad last night. I was concerned about running in the snow since they don’t plow those paths, but it wasn’t very icy so that was good. It actually was a beautiful run because we had a gorgeous full moon and the snow all looked so sparkly and pretty!

MOWC - I hope you’re feeling better and a slow pace sounds like the right thing to be doing with your run right now.

busdriver - I do think that everyone has some kind of pain or another at times and for the most part you just get out there and run anyway unless it is something that is going to cause damage. BUT, I really don’t think you should have to be dealing with blisters. Those are painful and seems as if there has to be a solution. I hope trying 2 pairs of socks works.

abasket - I hear you on feeling overwhelmed. Your husband just retired. You should try to find things that you can have him do. I know that I tend to want to do everything myself (kind of a controlling personality, I guess) so that I can have things “just so” but really there are things that take time that it doesn’t really matter if it’s done exactly how you would do it. Now I know you aren’t going to turn over the baking to him, but surely he can wrap gifts and go to the grocery store? He’s newly retired, this is the time to establish expectations for what support he can give YOU while you are working. It sounds as if MOWC has a great support system with her retired husband, maybe you can take some tips from her!

sabaray - congratulations on that weight loss but I still think you are losing too much! Is this getting you back to a point you were at previously or is this taking you to a new low point? I think that makes a difference. And, by the way, on the days that I run 20 miles, I do eat anything I want! It’s all those other days that I can’t!

I managed to get in a couple miles on the treadmill during an afternoon break I took at work. I knew this before hand but it was just enough to clear my mind. That’s something!

I DO need to work on tasks for H. He has been doing some extras - some. Being honest, D2 is home for Christmas break and she is “golden” when it comes to helping out - she will wrap! She’s also good for laundry. Gotta love her!

Thanks. My appetite is still off, which isn’t a bad thing. It helped me pass up a lot of the Day 1 feast items here at work.

I did get very dehydrated yesterday. Maybe Michael can shed light on that. I feel like I drank plenty, but I WAS sick…

Oh- saw the bone doctor today and she’s fine with me ditching the Prolia. There are some new meds up for FDA approval next year and we will revisit it then.

I was feeling pretty smug because I’ve actually run in 32-degree temps (and what are called Gorge winds) two days in a row, but catching up here has destroyed my illusions… MOWC is running while sick, Sabaray is running losing weight… and I’m doing just over two miles and then booking it for home because the winds are making my hands hurt. And I’ve lost 0.5 pounds since the beginning of October (I’d lose more if I were actually paying more attention) (but at least my weight is pretty stable). Oh, and I’m staying on the west side of my local park because there’s some shelter from the winds there. Gorge winds: winds out of the east that roar down the Columbia River Gorge out of the mountains and bring icy-cold air with them. (Normally we have light winds out of the west if we have any winds at all.) Trees come down, snow and ice falls out of the sky (it started to snow since I began to write this!), and the dogs start to complain that they don’t want to walk with me, can’t we go home now?

I was planning to run-then-swim this morning but my swim buddy cancelled this morning and it only took me about a microsecond to decide not to go either.

Safe and sound now in the shelter of my house as the snow begins to swirl. Ingredients for pot roast in the Instant Pot…

I found I have my limits. 13 degrees, snow with 25 mph winds, white out conditions at time.

Took a rest day.

C3B - My weight has been all over the place this year, so this is really just a reset, hopefully back to my normal plateau. I would like to be lighter than that, but don’t know that I have the discipline to get there. I promise I am not doing anything crazy, I’m eating about 1800 calories a day and exercising. That’s it. I was eating a lot more earlier this year but I am done eating my feelings. It doesn’t help.

I’ve been looking at this site - interesting. There’s a calculator that allows you to calculate your diet quality score - familiar to those who have read Fitzgerald’s Racing Weight. Being thinner would definitely help with the stress on my joints and my pace. http://racingweight.com/index.html

Those would be my limits, too deb - we’re supposed to have terrible wind chill here as well. dmd - I’m with the dogs! And there’s a lot to be said for having a stable weight.

Where is Michael?

I despise wind- especially cold wind! That and 40s rain are my deal-breakers. It is supposed to get very frigid here tonight. I will probably stay inside until I’m sure I feel completely better.

Longish pup walk on the Rec Path in Stowe, VT this morning. We had several inches of fresh snow last night, plus there’s quite a bit on the ground. The section of the Rec Path we were on isn’t cleared in the winter, so I was slogging through it all. (The pup, OTOH, was bounding about with great enthusiasm.)

Our quick trip to Stowe was so I could help my father put the condo kitchen “back together” after a remodeling job. I helped him organize things in a way that makes sense. We also scoped out window treatments with him. He was most appreciative of the help.

Michael is most likely researching his long and expensive gift list. Is there a Christmas gift registry at REI, Garmin or similar we could perhaps enroll him in? He seems to be lacking in fitness-related items.

Did 10x200 intervals on the treadmill tonight at 32/33 seconds. Did 10x30 second intervals on spinner bike this morning. Going to try and get in 2x a day 3 days per week during dec/jan.

Michael, speaking of expensive fitness gear, I can pick up a Wahoo Kickr bike trainer for $999. Is it worth the extra 6-700 bucks over a regular trainer? Kind of unique that you remove your back wheel.

I think the Wahoo Kickrs are big with the triathlon crowd. Unless something has come along that is more popular, that might be the thing to get. I’m thinking there is one in our basement.

Good workout Ohio! And LOL on the gift registry for Michael!

2.5 miles on the dreadmill tonight. HR still high and it feels really hard. I’m mostly recovered but not totally, I guess.

I’m mostly a reader of this thread, because I’m not nearly as active as some of you, but I did hike 9 miles or so around Zion National Park today, which was pretty spectacular. We did several short hikes. Tomorrow we are going to do an 8 mile hike, IF I can talk my H into it.

'Didn’t get very far on my walk today. -20 with wind chill! I stay pretty warm except for finding something around my face. My breath fogs my glasses and I need to find something that stays tight around my face as the scarf keeps slipping down. I have tried different ways to wrap and tie. Will research tonight.
