Catching up today after being gone this weekend. We ran the Hot Chocolate 15K in St. Louis on Sunday. It was cold and windy but not as bad as I thought it might be. I was slow, but not horribly so. S and SIL ran and I think they had a good time.
MOWC - so sorry to hear that you ended up with the bug your husband battled. I’m glad you were able to keep your streak alive, I hope you’re able to rest for the remainder of the day. Glad you’re getting your 250 steps in per hour!
I usually wear a baseball cap with a built-in headband in good weather - I sweat a lot. It also helps keep hair off my face. In the winter I wear a beanie-type hat to stay warm. It’s amazing how soaked that hat is after a run, even when it is single digit temps.
Now time to attempt a 7 mile run. Can I do it without my feet killing me? I am trying to work up to a half marathon by Feb, in a feeble attempt to qualify for and do the Pikes Peak run with my husband in August. Was able to make it up to 6 miles the other day without too much pain, almost halfway there!
^busdriver – what part of your feet kill you when you do distance? I had real issues with plantar fasciitis when training for my marathon and got some good advice here. If you did 6, you should be ok doing longer (just keep it slow).
Sounds like I gotta check those out, deb922, thanks!
@Classof2015, according to my podiatrist, the problem is that I’m a serious overpronator (I don’t know if that’s the technical term), with bunions. So when I run, I massively roll inwards, causing painful blisters right on my bunion, inner front of my feet.
I wear orthotics that supposedly train my feet when I don’t run, but I don’t like wearing them when I run. I have stability shoes with a fairly wide toebox (Brooks Adrenalin), and they’re they best I’ve tried out of about 10 shoes. I wear blister prevention socks, blister prevention cream and moleskin. I attempt to run on softer surfaces and control my pronation, but it seems impossible to control that. I don’t run two days in a row. It seems much more tolerable now, but still working on it!
Well, my seven mile run went just okay. Not much foot pain until the five mile point, I kept running and my feet were very uncomfortable. Pretty big blisters now. I wonder if I could suffer through it for six more miles. I went at a very slow pace (9.15), so I don’t think going even slower is going to help. Better than it used to be, I’d get the pain at around the 2-3 mile point.
My next attempt, I think I will try wearing my custom orthotics. The podiatrist told me to run in them, but they feel weird and make me run extremely slow. However, maybe it just takes getting used to.
I’m so fussy about the way headbands fit - can’t be too tight or two loose. If it’s really hot out, not too thick. I like the Lululemon ones because though I usually wear them the regular way, I can also fold them in half for a thinner headband - if that’s what I’m feeling that day! But yeah, they are pretty absorbent!
I think if I get one of these great headbands, it can take minutes off my miles!
I dunno. I used to be a fast runner, I don’t feel like I’m going very fast now. There must have been a headwind. Both ways! I guess I’m realizing that as people get older, everyone has something that causes them pain, and they just deal with it. I’m definitely searching for the best solution to my foot issues, and I really appreciate the suggestions. However, at some point, I may just have to accept that my feet are the limiting factor for me. It used to be getting winded or sore legs, but with my feet hurting, I can’t seem to get to that point where I’m really pushing myself.
Starting to feel the holiday “overwhelmed”. The no extra time for anything. Busy at work. Obligations at home. A few presents still to be bought, all presents still to be wrapped. Haven’t started baking yet - this will happen, it’s non-negotiable! Need to somehow see my mom who is about 45 minutes away this weekend but the weather is looking yuck. No time to grocery shop! But need healthy food in the house! My steps are down - barely making 11-12K the last couple of days even with a little exercise. And exercise? I’m lucky to find 30 minutes to do some.
It’s hard to tell yourself it’s “ok” to not measure up as much with exercise now - it takes no time for me to feel frumpy if I don’t have it. One day at a time, one day at a time…
sabaray… I am also having acid reflux/indigestion. I have tried no late dinners, just eating a vegetable soup, etc. I am eating Zantac like crazy and drinking tons of water. Not working for me and it still wakes me up at night. If you find a resolution let me know!
My cold weather walking is good but I have been sorely tested this week! -20 with wind chill…brrrr! My feet, hands and body stay warm but my face gets cold. I wear glasses to keep the wind out of my eyes but they tend to fog up if I wrap a scarf around my face. Got to get that figured out. Had to break my own paths this week after we got 8 inches of snow. Tough work but beautiful!
Hoping all who are under the weather feel better soon!
@NorthMinnesota, your walk sounds beautiful. I love snow but that wind chill…brrr is right! I’ve tried sleeping with my head a bit more elevated and that seems to be helping a bit. Dinner is my lightest meal of the day - I’m thinking I may need to eat a bit more at that meal. I’ve lost 15 pounds since the end of October - and yes, I’m definitely eating! Sensibly!
@abasket, what about just working in a brisk ten minute walk? Give Mr. Abasket that grocery list! Take something off your plate.
6.2 miles this morning. Weather looks horrid for the weekend so trying to fit the running in before the Arctic blast and freezing rain arrives.
“Dinner is my lightest meal of the day - I’m thinking I may need to eat a bit more at that meal. I’ve lost 15 pounds since the end of October - and yes, I’m definitely eating! Sensibly!”
What…? How does anyone lose that kind of weight in such a short time without starving themself or doing something extreme? Impressive!
Sabaray is getting too buff. I’m sending her a jumbo plate of Christmas cookies.
I’ll get in some exercise but it feels sort of rushed and incomplete. Don’t want to rush the holiday season but secretly in the back of my mind…3 weeks and live will be back to normal ( I know, “bah humbug!”)!
That’s reasonable weight loss - about 2 pounds a week. Not as many carbs. Running faster, doing more cross training. Drinking lots of water and less beer.
