“Tried” to XC ski today, tried being the operative word. There wasn’t really enough snow and were no tracks. I’m not very good so tracks are very helpful. It was so cold also, I wasn’t able to glide so I wasn’t able to warm up. . Gave up after 40 frustrating minutes. It will get better.
Came home and the spring broke on our garage door. I have a repair person coming tomorrow so I have to stay home for them. They said they are hoping to get someone out first thing. These things always happen when there are a million things to do. And we are getting a storm on Saturday but we shouldn’t be too slowed down by that.
I’ve enjoyed CC skiing for years. There is an immense nature preserve and a very large park near my house which are connected by a “rails to trails” recreational path so when we have snow, opportunities abound for CC skiing. When I first started CC, I bought a set of long, narrow skis without edges that were really designed for groomed trail racing. Fun but not too practical for the typical conditions I would encounter and going down hill was always an adventure. A few years ago, I bought shorter, wider CC skis with metal edges. Made a world of difference. I can now cut my own trails and handle icy conditions much better. Now if we would only get snow more regularly!
Not a skiier - downhill or CC. Mr. Sabaray enjoyed skiing in his younger days but I don’t see the likelihood of him returning to it great enough for me to learn how!
60 minutes of Pilates this morning. I tried to stretch, etc. while my trainer was on vacay but this morning was difficult. Feeling better now that it’s over! Planning on a “fun” mat class Sunday but am taking the weekend off from running. I am 6.48 miles from completing the 2016 challenge and will wrap that up next week. I am scheduling a massage which I badly need. Merry Christmas to me!
The garage door people are here! I’m soon to be sprung lol!
The XC trails had been snow combed but the tracks hadn’t been set yet. We got there at the wrong time. Going to try to go to another trail this afternoon. Hoping to wait until after the groomers have a chance to get things set.
They are calling for a foot of snow this weekend. I’m glad I either ordered my presents on line or got things done. Still a bunch to do and leaving early for our Christmas festivities.
The one thing I never could do was get off of a ski lift on my cross country skis. At many resorts the CC area is accessed by a lift. The skis are dangling from your feet. My husband and I always landed in a heap at the top of the lift and they had to stop the whole thing to clear us out!
“I was reading CC as (College Confidential) and not as “Cross Country” - even though I totally understood the context… I’m losing it…”
LOL!! I’m losing it, too. I had to re-read the posts to make sure I was reading them correctly.
Bitter cold descended on Seattle, too. The mountains are loaded with snow! Our favorite XC area is a 1.5 hr drive away, so naturally we have not done much skiing in the past few years because we are both so busy! Neither of us is a downhill skier. Kid won a snowboard at the raffle at the Brooks fun run (apparently a good one), so she is itching to get it equipped and hit the slopes. She learned to snowboard while she was working abroad. Mr. B is less than thrilled… Wants to wrap her in bubble wrap and crate for safety. LOL.
The temperature felt like some degrees below zero when I went out this morning! It took over a mile on the treadmill for me to feel warm, and I’m usually sweating after a couple minutes. 3.4 miles done. The running segments were easier than the walking segments due to my hip/gait issues.
Growing up in MA, I started skiing (downhill) when I was 3. Back then ski boots were like oversize leather shoes with square toes, skis were long, wood, and had “bear trap” bindings; and there were no down jackets. My toes got frostbitten when I was about 8 or 9, so now I’m more susceptible. For all that, it was our main winter family activity. I was on the ski team in college. We used to take our D & S to Stowe (staying at the previously mentioned family owned condo) between Christmas and New Year’s every year. S got the snowboarding bug; D gave it up after getting taken out by another boarder, causing her to badly bruise her tailbone. (Her gymnastics coach was NOT pleased.) H and I have tried CC skiing a couple of times – much better exercise and no chance of me being cold!
We are not really skiers though H skied downhill a bit when he was younger and D usually goes once a year.
Cold here, too. Was able to run outside on Wednesday, but it was 3.1 on the treadmill this AM. It’s supposed to be icy and nasty early tomorrow, so I am hoping Sunrise yoga is not cancelled.
We got snow here in Portland (OR) Wednesday afternoon, and yesterday I just walked the dogs a few times, carefully, with my boots on. This morning I felt too restless for that, and the sun is out (although everything is still covered with snow and the temp is 25 F with no wind) so I dressed warm and put a sweater on the dog and out we went. We managed a little less than three miles on snow-packed roads and trails in our local park, at a pace so slow I’m surprised by it. My Garmin says my stride length was 0.64 m–my usual is around 0.85 to 0.9 m, depending on my mood. But I didn’t slip, I didn’t fall, I did work up a decent sweat, and I’m glad I went.
I think I may have turned the corner on this virus and after-effects. I’m still not 100%, and I had a set-back last night after eating food that was probably too rich at husband’s bike group party, but I feel a little more normal. Ran 1.2 miles this morning on the treadmill and 2.3 more this evening, and the evening run was approaching normal.
We are going to have horrible weather with high winds all weekend, so not sure what is going to happen. Needless to say, this week is very low mileage for me.
I feel like the weather has totally gone down the tube. 8 inches of snow last weekend. Temps near zero a good part of this week. Snow coming in tonight with a blend of snow/ice/rain in the next 24 hours - enough of an expected mess that my S and DIL’s mini vacation flight to Florida tomorrow morning was already cancelled tonight. More snow expected Sunday later. It’s a freakin cold, snowy, icy mess out there. I just want to be able to walk the dog without fear of falling - can’t even worry about running outside for awhile!
Bitter cold here… Mr. braved the elements to put some cat food out in the backyard for the orange kitty (yes, the one who got wedged into our truck’s engine!) - we think we now have a barn cat. Filled the bird feeders with seed… Phew, the critters have been taken care of.
And I just sent in my last assignment!! Wooooohooooo!
"The outsole compound is also formulated for premium wet-dry traction and skid resistance, which Brooks says is “perfect for the beer transition zone where spilled beverages can create hazards. Furthermore, the shoe’s perforated stretch-woven upper “not only provides a sock-like fit but also vents and drains in the event of beer spillage.”
It is a sheet of ice outside and the studio cancelled the class. I am guessing they will cancel more as we are being advised to stay in until the afternoon. Don’t feel like the treadmill again so it may be a rest day.
