I just bought the Brooks Hyperion. Love them. Lightweight, yet firm and stable. My chiro wants me to run all my miles in these. He thinks the higher foam shoes makes me unstable.
A lot of the elite runners are complaining that the beer milers are getting shoe contracts while they are being cancelled. It’s all about eyeballs. I think the publicity is good for running overall.
It is 60 degrees and windy here but the bottom falls out tonight! I am SO glad I got to run outside today for the first time since Monday am before I got sick. It was a struggle at first, but I settled in and did 6 miles. I wanted at least 5 because tomorrow might be treadmill with the bitter cold weather coming. I wore red Oiselle stuff and felt very Christmasy.
I like that wearing red running stuff for the holidays
It warmed up enough to mostly melt the ice and it’s quite nice out so I took advantage and walked to the library. Only about a 2 mile round trip but nice to get out.
Waited out the freezing rain that hit Manhattan this morning (that’s the great thing about running on the weekends – you’re not subject to whatever the weather is at 6 am) and did the 6 mile loop (in preparation for January 10k). There was definitely some icy patches I had to avoid.
One thing that’s tough about trying to keep up a running schedule is fitting it in before work (which I know you all struggle with and many of you manage to do). This week, we had someone coming in for an interview. Only time that worked for them was 8 am Friday. I felt wiped out (back to back holiday networking events) so figured I’d forego my run so I could be there on time. Got to the office at 7:45 – they canceled. So I could have run anyway.
One nice thing at one of the networking events was meeting a woman who works with inner city moms suffering from PPD. I told her about the marathon and she said she’s always wanted to run one. I told her she should start up a meet up group for her clients. Doesn’t have to be a marathon as the goal – even a run/walk event could give them a focus and endorphin boost. She kept thanking me.
Our outdoors is now a literal sheet of ice. And not going anywhere. It’s 28 right now and the high for the next three days is 21, 10 and 28. If the 28 is sunny MAYBE that will help a little. I mean you can literally not walk down the sidewalk! Good thing I took our dog for a decent walk this morning when there was mostly snow on the walks! He’s going to have to make do (and doo-doo - couldn’t resist!) with walking around our front, side, back yard where we can stay on the “grass”.
I managed 11,000 steps just around the house today - cleaning, baking, refinishing a piece of furniture that required lots of up and down the basement stairs. Topped that off with a 45 minute cardio workout that included lots of squat work, pushups, jumping jacks and lunges. You CAN work up a sweat in your living room! So at this point 15,000 steps on a day when I barely got outside.
Lol, @ohiopublic :). I’m not allowed unchaperoned in exercise equipment stores or bike shops anymore! A few months ago, my brother-in-law asked my advice on getting a new bike. I took him to my local bike shop. One bike, one helmet, one pair of bike shoes and pedals, one Garmin computer, one clothing kit and one Kickr later, I was a very satisfied shopper :D.
Did my 5x5 strength workout today. For the third time, I failed to get 5 full reps on all 5 sets of benches. So now I need to regress the weights a bit and build back up more slowly. Of course, this required that I buy fractional weight plates so that I can progress in increments smaller than 5 lbs. Hopefully, the ability to progress in smaller increments will get me past this plateau.
Was given my IWatch today. Looks like useful fun but boy is there a lot to learn!
I had an Ambassadors of health moment yesterday when a friend commented on FB that she should start running like I have. Took the opportunity to recommend the local running/walking program I did last spring.
I may be in the minority, but I am loving this cold weather. Ran a trail 5K yesterday in the drizzle. It was more of a hike than a run the trail was so steep, rocky, and slippery. Came in third in my AG, and yes, there were more than three people. Woke up to below freezing temps this morning so couldn’t swim outside ( this is normally a swim day) and instead ran five miles in the neighborhood. I hope to slip away and go to a spin class later.
All this activity to balance out all the holiday eating. It has reached its peak the last few days with kids coming home and all kinds of treats arriving.
It is 60 degrees here today. I was tempted to run but was scheduled for a 75 minute Pilates mat class that I knew was going to be tough, so skipped the run and am very glad I did. Have resisted the urge to bake thus far. It helps that everyone in the house wants to be thinner than they currently are.
Edited to add: Just came across this great article for the pre, currently and post menopausal women on our thread.
We used to swim outside all year in Dallas- even when it was single digit temps (not often it hit that, but it did ever year). The pool was heated and felt great. Tough part was getting from the building and getting in the water- it was a short distance, but still… We had huge white swim robes. The pool deck would freeze, but we were toasty in the water.
It is bitter cold today with a wind and a dusting of snow and ice. No outside running for me. It’s simply not worth a fall (and being miserable). Cold temperature with sun and no wind I can do, but not single digit wind chill.
That IS a good article. It is still frustrating to watch my performance decline when I feel like I"m working even harder!
4.5 miles on the treadmill today (which is long for me to be inside). Watched a football game and pushed it a little harder than I wanted to. I always just want to get it done sooner. Finished the week with 25.7 miles, which means I lost over 10 miles from being sick. That’s not too bad. I can wrap up the year.
Hi everyone - I did a fun holiday-themed half marathon this morning & set a new PR! This was my first ever half marathon last year, & I was really hoping to cut at least a smidge off my time to feel like I’d made some progress over the year. I went down by one minute & one second. Now my knee hurts along the outside. I’ve had some twinges there prior to this. IT band syndrome? Looking like a few days off for me & some gentle walking. That makes 7 half marathons in the past year!
