Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks abasket! I feel the same – the “to do” list has a life of its own at this point.

Agree- I am feeling “whelmed”. ( I learned from a therapist friend years ago that you should only allow yourself to feel “whelmed” and not “OVERwhelmed”.)

Decided to do my 8 mile run today since there is supposed to be rain tomorrow. Bad idea. Tired from pushing it on the dreadmill, work, parties, etc. Every mile was “this needs to be the last mile”. I honestly didn’t think I would make it more than 2 miles. I made 5 a goal, and somehow managed 7, but it wasn’t pretty. My HR was high and there was no pace that felt OK. Glad it’s over. Also- I overdressed. So- that’s done.

“whelmed” - I like it :). Last night was supposed to be an indoor cycling workout but by the time I was done working doing law work, training clients, start up work for the new studio, the night had escaped me and it was 9:00. Normally, I would just climb on my bike on the trainer and slog through it, but the thought of eating one more dinner at 10:30 and then collapsing into bed to start all over today was just - whelming! But today’s a new day. Will do my 5x5 weight routine this evening for a couple of hours and then it will be cycling training Saturday and Sunday to keep the metabolism up for all the Chanukah and Christmas celebrations we will be attending. Next week will be Key Biscayne for 8 days staying with friends. Lots of good company, working out, sleeping and - did I say - napping :D! Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and a Healthy and Happy New Year to all of you.

Speaking of Christmas! My running friends or family don’t seem anxious to buy me an AlterG ($20,000?) for Christmas this year I might have found an alternative.

Might go test one out next week. Only $1500! But need to pair it with a treadmill.

Also, in the spirit of positivity, I have decided to not use the D word in place of the T in treadmill. I think the treadmill “knows” and ratchets up the punishment.

I would love to hear your reviews, Ohio!! Looks cool.

I was feeling whelmed trying to catch up on a week’s worth of posts! Last weekend was crazy weather. The 5K we were supposed to run on Saturday ended up being cancelled due to the ice - the roads were horrible and the streets we were to run in were impassable. We were scheduled to run the half marathon at the Santa Hustle on Sunday, but they cancelled the half since the wind chills were below zero. We ran the 5K instead - it was cold but not as bad as I was expecting. I was happy to be first in my age group. I had to go out of town for work most of this week and that was a killer but I did get to run outside two of the days and it was a lot warmer than at home. Now I am happy to be off work until after New Years. Yay!

We had a good 3.25 mile run with Back on My Feet this morning - what a wonderful group of people. Many of the members are able to go home to some form of family for a couple days at Christmas, but most of them are not. It is so amazing to witness the positive attitudes of the group and their enthusiasm for the morning run is just awesome. Since we didn’t have to work today, we were able to join some of the other volunteers for coffee afterwards and that was fun.

I am struggling with not having any kids home for Christmas. It is silly to feel this way, so I am trying to get over myself.

Gertrude - congrats on running all those half marathons this year and for your impressive finish on this last one - that is a lot of time that you improved! I’m really sorry about your dog. That is tough.

Christmas baking palooza today. Had to do some taste testing, but I resisted a lot. Neither D or S are home for Christmas, so we were supposed to do a scaled down version – small tree, not much decorating, not all the usual Christmas Eve foods, etc. Well, that is NOT what’s happening here. And apparently I’m supposed to do it ALL! I was up at 5:00, but no exercise other than baking, running up and down stairs with decorations, etc, etc.Yeah, I’m a little testy at the moment.

C3B- I know it’s hard to be away from your kids. We’ve had a few Christmases without one or both, so I’ve gotten to be surprised when everyone is here! Since my daughter is a priest, she’s sort of anchored here for Christmas, although it’s not exactly a relaxing holiday for her! Having my son here is good in some ways, but he always seems to disrupt the order of my world!

I got 10000 steps today over my run, so that was good.

Goodness MOfWC! Talk about working both Christmas and Easter!

Got my 10k steps easily today! Making sure that everything is in order if I croak next week. With anesthesia - you never know.

NONE of that kind of talk, Bunsen! All will be well.

Cold rain here today, should have run yesterday but didn’t, will try to fit in a quick few miles this afternoon. Not a particularly diet friendly menu for the next few days, but everyone enjoys a little treat now and then. Definitely not junk - almond brioche toast, anyone?

Blessings of the season to all who are celebrating.

Bunsen- hoping for a good outcome and a return to pain free running.

I’m proud of myself. It is ugly and rainy outside, but 57 degrees! I figured I would watch football mid-day on the treadmill (nod to Ohio and using the “t”). I talked myself into going out “just for 2 miles” since it was a light rain. I managed to do the whole 4 miles! It never pounded me, but I got wetter than I thought. I wore a light windbreaker that felt good but wasn’t really waterproof. I am not a rain runner, so this was a big victory for me. My son, who has practically raced in hurricanes, is still cowering in the basement. He can only run a little bit because of his quad tendinitis, but he wanted to see how a couple of miles felt.

Good job, MOWC! Running in the rain is something I never do either, but it was 37 degrees and raining and I decided I’d try out this Nike “Shield” jacket I got – kept me dry pretty much the whole run.

I don’t have a treadmill option, but if I did, I bet I’d have a love/hate relationship with it.

I think there’s a big difference between “water resistant” and “water proof”. I saw people running in parkas etc.

Classof2015, I thought I would really hate treadmill, but it definitely beats running under pouring rain in 40-degree weather. Good to know about the jacket. As the big kid who ran in college used to say, Nike makes great clothes but crappy shoes. I think their shoes improved significantly!

We are having pretty decent weather here. High thirties/low forties, but not rainy, and no ice on the roads or trails. I ran with the dog yesterday AND hiked with my daughter (who is more talkative than the dog and less inclined to growl at off-leash dogs on the trail). Ran again today, for a five-day streak.

If I didn’t run in the rain, I’d probably get out about half as often. Of course, our rain is mostly really heavy drizzle, and I end up no wetter than I’d be anyway, since I sweat liberally. (When I admit to sweating, I hear my father’s voice saying: “horses sweat, men perspire, and women dew.” Sorry, dad.)

Good job, dmd!

I tallied up my races for the year (still have a 5K to go on the 31st). Meaning- I ran a report on RunningAhead to tell me my races…

6 5Ks (or what was supposed to be 5K distance)
1 6K
2 10K
1 15K
1 10 mile
3 1/2 marathon

^^^And a partridge in a pear tree!!

I know I’m in the minority here, but I tend to prefer Nike running shoes. Guess they work for my feet! I do find they run small though so I size up.

Was THRILLED to go to a local Metropark and get three miles and some change in OUT-SIDE! Path was wet but safe. Took a selfie - me and a deer on the edge of the woods!

Wishing you all a safe and happy however you choose to celebrate season! We will celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah - a rare opportunity to do both at the same time!

I used to wear Nike almost exclusively, and I still have those really expensive FlyKnit higher top stretchy shoes that I like a lot. I have issues with Nike and the doping stuff with their team AND the way they hammered smaller companies during the Olympic Trials and wouldn’t let them mention that they were the sponsors of Olympic qualifying athletes. I think the Pegasus is one of the all time great shoes, though.

You all guilted me into getting a few miles in - only 2.55 miles this afternoon, but they’re done and I met my weekly goal. It was actually daylight and I could see where I was going - different experience for me!

Okay, my end-year count is: 6 5Ks, 5 trail runs of 4->7 miles in a trail series (where I was the only woman over 60), 1 10K, and two sprint triathlons. I also competed in a ridiculous number of dog agility events and qualified a total of 120 times (which basically means I did about 250 flat-out sprints of about 15 to 45 seconds, depending on the event, including memorizing 250 (or so) courses and planning how I would direct the dog around the course).

For next year, I’ve entered two 10Ks and a sprint tri, am contemplating a half, and have a few 5Ks planned already. I’ve also qualified for nationals in one of the dog agility venues where I compete and will be going to that, I hope.
