Ahhh- on the earphones. I had a life-changing (well, at least “run changing”) experience this morning. A friend strongly recommended Plantronics Backbeat Fit bluetooth earphones. I have resisted the cordless/bluetooth earphones because reviews haven’t been great and no one has seemed that thrilled with what they have. Well, these puppies are AWESOME! I even figured out by myself how to pair them with my iPod (Nano), use the controls (well, I’ve mastered on/off and volume so far) and off I went! They were comfortable and stayed in my ear but didn’t block out all surrounding noise. They have hooks over your ear, too, but they weren’t uncomfortable at all even under my hat! I didn’t know what to do without a cord running down my neck and under my shirt! It was wonderful.
3.1 very cold miles done.
Just want to emphasize again- if you can make yourself run very, very slowly (even a walk/run) it is much less likely you will hate it. Running isn’t for everyone, and there are many days I don’t love it, but the fact is that it is a VERY efficient form of cardio exercise and can be done anywhere.
Also to emphasize, especially for those who are new/just returning to fitness…Running is not the only answer!! Experiment with lots of things to find something you’ll stick with! Dance class? Zumba? Yoga? Hiking? Biking? Spinning? Don’t feel you have to be boxed into running just cuz some people do it!
Good motto:
Spend time doing what you like or are willing to do. Spend less time talking about what you can’t/won’t do.
I feel I see/hear people talking themselves OUT of fitness. Commit to something - or a plan of more than one thing (as the first link in post # 56678 shows) and make it happen, one day at a time with a goal of getting through one week. Rinse and repeat.
As a long time mostly lurker on this thread, I’ve always been impressed with MOWC and others who run no matter what. I know for my H, running is almost a MUST. His personality changes if he doesn’t get some exercise. I, on the other hand, went through much of my adult life without doing much planned exercise. BUT, I went through menopause very early, and things definitely changed after that. These days I feel like the “sag” is worse than anything.
I missed the gym yesterday, but plan to go today.
MOWC - thanks for the report on the bluetooth earphones. H and I have wanted wireless earbuds for a long time but haven’t been able to find anything quite right. We will check them out!
I am going to check out those headphones, MOWC - nice to have an expert review!
Didn’t want to but got in a bit over 6 this morning. Was not good and had veggie supreme pizza for dinner last night - from Pizza Hut, no less - just too tired to pull something together. H is getting back to his routine - his calendar is a bit different due to school breaks, holidays, etc. and that will make things a bit easier on the home front.
Nice recipe, @abasket - roast onions are delicious. These are also super tasty:
MOWC I got those for xmas, life changing doesn’t begin to describe these with retractable buds and on the fly controls and collarband these bad boys go all day until they need a recharge! I’m in love!
I have the over the ear hooks for exercise and the retractables for work and stuff. Both are amazing
I have both the on ear controls by LG Bluetooth they were on sale at Costco. I prefer those, wear em all day, but the planetronics over ear hooks stay put, they just bother me for all day while I work
I guess mine have the on ear controls, but I haven’t mastered them yet.
On the food front- I’ve been doing pretty well since I came back to work Tuesday. One homemade cookie this morning (worth it). Last night I got in a bind for dinner. We had a 6 pm basketball game and no time to eat dinner before it. I really needed something, and, as you can imagine, the choices at the game ranged from bad to horrible. I settled on a small, ketchup only hotdog. When I got home I ate 1/2 a Noosa and that was dinner.
I can run at a pretty fast pace once I have 1-2 miles done at a slower pace. I’ve just noticed that I really labor the first 1/2 mile. Must be an age thing. Never had that problem when I was 18?!
I think it takes at least a month of running 3-4 days a week for a new runner to get acclimated. Starting out is torture, but if you stick with it for a month it becomes much easier. The couch 2 5k program is the best way to ease into running.
Just clicked on a twitter ad for a workout program that they want to SELL. Headline - “Cardio increases belly fat and speeds aging”.
I keep thinking I could sell any program or pill with the following claim-“lose xx pounds by just watching tv and eating as much as possible”. Problem is that I need to sleep at night.
@abasket - thank you for the onions post!!! I have a bag of onions that I need to use in something. Perfect! As my grandpa used to say, “a spoon is a welcome gift right before the supper” (meaning - perfect timing!).
Cold and snowy here today. Tonight is a workout at the gym with my trainer. I am finally pain-free! My knee feels great and my shoulder is finally back to normal. I hope I’m not hurting again after tonight’s training session! (Although that would just be the good soreness of a good workout.)
Tomorrow morning’s Back on My Feet run has been cancelled. They don’t run if it is below 10 degrees or if the wind chill is below zero. I’m not too disappointed that tomorrow morning is cancelled, I am struggling with the lack of sleep this week now that I’m back to work - especially with these 10:00 pm conference calls every night. I am looking forward to “sleeping in” tomorrow morning all the way to 5:15 am!
CountingDown - WooHoo! Congrats on the 5 lb party!!!
