If I understand your last run, busdriver, you were fine for the first few miles before the blisters and pain set in. Kudos to you for wanting to run despite the pain – and I understand how professional athletes have to do that – but my opinion about exercise is that while some pain and discomfort is to be expected, anything that is excruciating is not worth it. If I had your issues, then I would do short runs, stopping before the blisters started. But that’s me.
We had snow yesterday, so I spent some time at the gym doing cardio – and had a miserable walk back home truding through snow and wind. Today it looks pretty and the sun is out, but it’s also bitter cold. So another gym day.
Bitter cold here, too. The roads are mostly clear, but running paths have lots of ice, so I think I’ll stick with the treadmill for the short run I plan for today. I’m supposed to minimize my fall risk, and ice patches probably don’t jive with that!
I know you’re right, fireandrain, but I would never continue to do something that caused lasting damage. Blisters are trivial, and I just gotta find a way to get through 13.1 miles one time, I’m not going to keep doing this. Maybe morphine? Whiskey shots?
Good to stay away from that ice, you guys! Nothing like falling on your butt, or worse…just think, if we all lived in Hawaii, we could go outside and exercise every day of the year.
It’s bitter cold here also and I have a cold - not a fun combination. I didn’t run yesterday, but did get out for a long walk to do our trail clean-up in the afternoon so I got a decent amount of steps in for the day. This afternoon we’re going to attempt trail running with some friends. It should be a 5 mile run and they are normally a little slower than I usually run so hopefully this will go OK. I’m not sure about trail running in the snow and ice but this is a beautiful park so I think it will be fun. Lots of hills, though!
busdriver - I sure hope you can find a way to avoid those blisters, that sounds miserable. I hope you’re able to find a half that will work for you. You have me intrigued about that Pike’s Peak race!
Bunsen - I hope you’re enjoying the vacation and that you can get in the ocean soon! Sounds like a nice relaxing time, though.
Be careful, C3B! Icy trails… I bet it will be beautiful, though.
I wound up going outside after all. The roads were almost completely clear. It was still cold, but I figured if I got miserable and came back, it was less I had to do on the treadmill! I did my whole 3.2. Very tired legs from the 9 miles on the treadmill yesterday. My “keeping warm” problem seems to be my face. I really don’t like anything covering my mouth and nose, which means nothing is covering my cheeks and chin.
Went for a walk last night - what a bust. The beachwalk was closed “for repairs.” I have a suspicion that the owners of the fancy houses just did not want the riffraff walking past their views… Bummer. Made Mr. walk back and forth to get 3 miles in. I think I will sneak in the water today.
Ice and cold(s). I really feel your pain! Ice and rain are in the forecast for Seattle, according to our housesitter. Hang in there, y’all.
Somehow I can’t envision that you and Mr. B are riffraff, Bunsen.
Still very cold here today and there is some wind. I was going to try and get outside this afternoon but after running a few errands it’s just too cold. Went to the gym and banged out 6 miles on the treadmill where I was reminded how much I dislike new members and their adorable children. One young charmer informed his mother I was staying on the treadmill too long - I was only allowed 30 minutes. I politely told him that the limit only applied when others were waiting for treadmills and since no one was, I could keep using it. His mother was embarrassed. Can’t wait for January to be over!
sabaray- what a jerky kid! You should have kept going for another 30 minutes!
My daughter was funny about her long run (10 miles) on the treadmill at her gym yesterday. Her gym attracts an, um, older crowd and she’s always having to explain the principles of sharing swim lanes etc. She was embarrassed yesterday to arrive at her treadmill with iPad, banana, water bottle, sweat rag etc. She took a break at 60 minutes when the treadmill shuts off to eat part of her banana, take a bathroom break and start up all over again. She said she got some looks from the staff who were curious about what she was doing! Most of the members walk and chat for 15-30 minutes!
LOL, sabaray - you encountered a future traffic cop.
MOfWC, your daughter did great. I am embarrassed to say how many miles I ran on a treadmill once… I picked the time of the day so no one would be there to shoo me off of it.
Someone the other day told me she was “injured” so she couldn’t share a lane with me. I decided not to get into an argument with her and found another lane. I’m very lucky that since I don’t work, I can swim during the day when it is pretty light.
Here’s another NYTimes story based on a small study that shows that switching up your type of exercise could be a good idea. http://nyti.ms/2j0pDPf
My gym sounds like your D’s, MOWC. I’ve done the same in my Planet Fitness days. The ellipticalls and weight machines are far more popular than the treadmills, surprisingly! I’m trying to be better with cross training, so tomorrow will be elliptical and a Reformer class.
Vinyasa yoga class today (went to a class with a new teacher, who I liked a lot). Went to gym after and did 20 minutes on the stair climber. I successfully completed the first week of the 21-day yoga and meditation challenge.
Took D2 back to school today. Miss her so BUT also will appreciate getting back into my schedule for working/eating/exercising! No exercise today beyond my required steps + a little bit extra - not bad for close to 5 hours in the car!
Busy week including a trip to Cleveland tomorrow and Tuesday - I plan to lock myself in the fitness center at the hotel tomorrow night for a good hour!!!
I don’t think I could run a 6 minute mile even if white walkers were chasing me…
Although I was proud of my 4.45 miles on the treadmill yesterday (you guys inspired me to go a little longer than I usually do…I feel like I’m at a distance plateau)
And, got up this morning for some strength training. It’s -4 outside, I don’t see myself taking pup for a walk…brr.
All of your gym stories remind me
Of why I invested in gym equipment! I cannot be bothered and in socal, there’s little excuse to go outdoors.
I have been logging 30 mins on Stairmaster daily and feeling stronger every day. I really hope you all that are dealinf with frigid climates stay safe, ice falls are no fun, I fractured my tailbone like that once!
