3.3 mikes on the treadmill after work. I hope to get outside in the morning. I’m feeling cooped up.
Also I made a tweaked version of the recipe I posted upthread w/sweet potatoes and eggs. I didn’t have zucchini so subbed in brussel sprouts. Didn’t have black beans (I swore I did!) so used chickpeas. Added in a little bacon, jalapeno and onion. I put a dollop of labneh on the side and some pomegranate seeds to mix in with each bite. DE-licious!!!
@abasket – my feeling about any workout clothing is "function first, then ask ‘do I look good?’ " Frankly, at this point, I figure if I’m sweating, I can wear whatever works for me and damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. I like shorts that fit snugly and don’t move because that means no chafing.
I’m trying to go a month without weighing myself, just focusing on eating carefully and only to an 8 on the hunger scale. I’ve been getting obsessed with numbers. Now of course I’m getting obsessed with “am I hungry?”
DH and I are back in Palm Springs this year to escape Portland’s winter. Got out just before the storms hit. Runnng here is very different from my usual up-and-down quiet trails. I’ve been avoiding concrete sidewalks (so hard on the knees) by running around and around and around a flat and grassy park not far from our rental. The dog loves running on grass, so do I, but it does get boring. Saturday I have a movie-themed 5k–we will be running past the stars’ houses–the pre-race email includes instructions like “when you make that turn, Elvis’s honeymoon hideaway is on the left.”
^^That race sounds SO fun!
And you are entirely right about function first - but I want to look “good” too!!
So cool, dmd. Enjoy the race and a bit of warmer weather!
For me, the workout clothing has to meet the 3 elements test: function, fussiness (lack thereof), and looks. If any element of the three is missing, it is a no-go.
If a piece is cool looking and functional but takes more than a minute to put on, it is not worth it. Lulu is notorious for making cute bras and tops with multiple little straps that look super cute yet are a pain in the rear to get on.
I’ve seen those cute bras with the little straps – tried one on and knew I’d never have time to get it on before running.
Checked the 10 day forecast for the half marathon I signed up for. So far, high is 48 degrees! Might just run in shorts. (And an age appropriate top ha ha).
My answer to “do I look good?” when running is “no, I’m drenched in sweat, but I have a really good haircut.”

I do like a nice bright tshirt and a sparkle skirt for races. I bought a new one just for this trip. Pink and orange swirls on black.
Just to repeat—my old track coach used to tell us that we aren’t out here to look pretty in a track suit!
But I bet you looked pretty, Ohio!
I like functionality- love the features Lulu and Oiselle include- all the pockets, zippers, hoods, whatever. I like colors- not big on black. I’ll pay extra for cuteness.
Got outside this morning in 62 degrees, damp and windy weather. At least I was outside! We are having on again/off again rain forever, it seems.
You guys have it all wrong. Cute isn’t the look you want in a race. You need to look mean and intimidating. Think Ronda Rousey in a running outfit.
Lol. “Mean and intimidating” is when a gal in pink flowered lulu shorts and a running bra with the back that looks like a colorful plate of spaghetti passes a bunch of dudes at the end of a marathon - with a smile.
Would that gal be anyone we know? Whose name starts with B?
In all seriousness, (though I love the humor above!) if I feel frumpy, I exercise frumpy. Just a fact!
Nice warm morning here so got in a very easy 5 miles. Hit the treadmill on Tuesday and took a Barre class yesterday. My blasted Garmin is again acting up - how I wish my HR was a steady 105 the entire run! Wind is really picking up and we’re supposed to be getting a wintry mix/ice this weekend.
MOWC, Bunsen - is it reasonable to follow a 15k training plan for a 10 miler? Or would it be better to use a plan for a half? I’m kind of up in the air. I have a half 6 weeks after the 10 miler.
I am restraining myself from more workout clothing as I really need more “work” clothing. Can you tell what I’m more excited about buying?
Sabaray- I’m sure the 15K program would be fine. You might want to add a 1/2 mile to some of the longer runs, but the rest should work perfectly.
I just ordered an Oiselle puff jacket (for casual- not running) which I did NOT need at all, but it was an additional 30% off. http://www.oiselle.com/shop/sale/new-katron-jacket I got the red and it is so cute.
Son just left to study in Shanghai, feeling super sad. His going away dinner was Taco Tuesday, of course, I indulged and didn’t work out that night. It is so dang hard to get motivated
Worked late but I did manage a half-hearted few miles on Stairmaster. Here we go, the start of the Januaries…
I’ve been MIA - battling a cold and swamped with work. Not a fun combination! I haven’t gotten much running in between feeling lousy and terrible weather. Sunday was a good 6 mile trail run, I am enjoying trail running as a change of pace much more than I expected I would. No running on Monday or Tuesday because I felt horrible, but last night I had a good 5 mile run. I was in such a better mood afterwards! Tonight will be a workout at the gym with my trainer.
Bunsen - I’m glad you were able to swim in the ocean finally!
SalveMater - I lived and worked in Shanghai for 3 years (2008-2011) and loved it. I hope your son has a wonderful experience there! I know it’s hard to have kids so far away, hopefully you will be able to Skype or Facetime often.
@C3Baker I love hearing from folks that had good experiences there so thanks for that. I think I boohooed off and on for 8 hours yesterday lol. Ugh. He’s a big fitness freak so I’ll keep going for him but right now, not feelin it at all. Glad to hear you are on the mend!
Went to slow flow yoga today and then followed it up by going to the gym and doing 20 minutes on the stair climber. Instructor opened a window in yoga today!! Doesn’t usually happen in January in MA.
A little run and then a spin. Looking forward to the weekend and a rest day.
I love to buy work out clothes, too. Always makes me feel speedier and stronger!
