Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Nothing today, I have terrible blisters. Didn’t even leave the house so I didn’t have to put shoes on.

Made plans to ski with sil and bil next weekend. Hope the weather cooperates

^^^And hope your blisters cooperate! Do you think you’ll still have snow next weekend with the warm up? Clearly you have lots right now!

Second week of my yoga/meditation challenge (21 days) is done!! For the upcoming week we do a cleanse. What you eat is based on your Ayurvedic body type. For me, that means broth and vegetables–no caffeine, sugar, or alcohol. It’s 3 days and I start tomorrow. Going to see my daughter in a play tonight–plan to indulge a bit at dinner afterwards.

Congrats on the yoga Bromfield - I don’t envy the cleanse!

Waited and waited to get a few more degrees. 32 was the best I could get - BUT, the sun came out when I was heading out! Abasket 5K for the day - a little speed work via my 10K app - some rounds of 1 minute fast, 1 minute jog. “Fast” - haha!

Anxiously awaiting my first Instapot yogurt to finish within the hour. If it works I’ll be enjoying some delicious yogurt, fruit and nuts this week!

WE HAVE YOGURT! Now I have 2 quarts of it. Anyone want to come over for breakfast? Yogurt and homemade granola on me - bring your own fruit!

I would love to! It sounds wonderful!

Just fun to see it worked. Tastes good too! Not like I have a problem with just buying yogurt - cause I don’t - but cool to try it an alternative way. Don’t worry Stonyfield, I’ve still got your back!

Me! Me! Me!!! When’s breakfast? I’ll bring organic raspberries and strawberries (Costco).

Walked on the trail… Really cool evening. The sky was so gorgeous just before the sunset. Glad we did not have a bird in the tonight’s fight, so we could just relax and enjoy the outdoors instead of being glued to the TV.

@abasket - I am all ears about your yogurt making experience! Do tell… We ran out of yogurt this morning, had to serve TJ’s mango kefir as the calcium source.

I was in NYC last week, and ran across the George Washington bridge as the sun was rising. I enjoyed some amazing views - it sure was windy, though. I also walked a tremendous amount.

Then, back to the gym! The last two days I’ve been on a treadmill/elliptical forced to watch the Travel Channel, which seems to specialize in scene after scene of people eating. And chefs cooking. One delicious looking thing after another. Is there ever anything else on the Travel Channel other than food – there is more to travel than eating out!

Good Morning everyone! I have the day off so I ran outside (3.3 miles). Felt good to be in the fresh air as opposed to the treadmill.

Ran 3.4 miles. Seemed much harder than the same 3.4 miles a couple of days ago. How/why is that?

Seems like all of a sudden I’m hearing about Instapots. I think D is putting one on her wedding registry. Had to check them out online. I have vivid memories of my mother using a pressure cooker – they always scared me some …

@GertrudeMcFuzz was our first pioneer on this thread I think making the Instapot yogurt. Gertrude are you still making it?

It was easy - just takes time to do it’s thing - but not your time! I’ll post the Youtube I watched (I like visuals) that helped me along. But basically:

  • pour 1/2 gallon whole milk into steel pot. Press yogurt button and adjust to “boil” - that will make it boil it to the 180 degrees necessary - I did check the temp once the cycle was finished - yep, it was right about 180!
  • let it cool to 145-150 degrees - just with the pot open it cooled down in 20-25 minutes.
  • take a cup of the milk out - blend in yogurt starter to that one cup of milk - I used one 8 oz. container of Stonyfield whole milk PLAIN yogurt. Then pour the mix into your pot with the rest of the milk and with a whisk gently incorporate - so no intense mixing.
  • put the lid on and set yogurt button to 8 hours. You can do it a little longer for thicker though the yogurt will thicken when you refrigerate it.
  • do nothing for the next 8 hours! Then voila, yogurt!

If there is a little liquid you can drain it off - but again you can also just mix it in since the yogurt will thicken anyway upon refrigeration - some people will strain the yogurt in a coffee filter or cheesecloth or whatever for greek yogurt. I thought mine was thick enough.

That’s it! Made 2 full quarts.

Also if someone was looking to save $$$, when I think about it 2 quarts of yogurt cost me:
$1.59 milk
$1.29 yogurt starter

So $2.88 for 2 quarts of yogurt.

This is really making me want to get an Instapot.

3.1 miles outside (50 degrees) this morning. I wasn’t eager to spring from bed… I am going to have to channel my inner sabaray by March or so and do a longer weekday run at least one day as I get into marathon training. Ugh.

Thank you, abasket! Very helpful. Ran out f kefir, too, this morning, so I made Kodiak flapjacks (of the Sahrk Tank fame  ).

@abasket – you’re making me want to make yogurt. My mom used to do that (back in the '70s). She had a Salton yogurt maker. She also composted. Not to be “with it” – to save money. For a while, she convinced us kids that yogurt with a little cinnamon and sugar was the best dessert ever.

MOWC - my wife has one in our house that she’ll sell you!

^^ Oh yeah- you bought it, right? Seriously- make me an offer!

Not to turn this into an Instapot thread but my brother and his wife had their fancy smancy oven in Brooklyn die just before the holidays. They have been using their grill and Instapot for all meals since. They are both intense cooking people - they don’t seem to be lacking in interesting meals while waiting to order a new oven!

Again, buying yogurt, not a big deal. But this yogurt is pretty delicious with little effort.
