Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

@dmd77 thank you, I hoped you would chime in! The plan has always been to spay her after her first season (for other reasons) so that works out great. Between now and then, I think I’m getting the message that shorter runs (think 2 mi or so) a couple of times a week are okay, but wait on increasing distance till more fully grown.

She did have a fun time this morning though…And has hardly stopped moving since we got back! At some point today she’s gonna crash…

Well, if she’s loving the runs, isn’t stiff, that meets the most important criteria! How’re you at evaluating structure? If the puppy has really good structure, you can do more earlier than with average structure. Labs can be prone to hip dysplasia–were the parents tested?

We got her from a very reputable, conscientious breeder, so yes - the parents were tested for this, that, and the other thing (including hips) and everything is clear. Tell me what you mean by “evaluating structure” - are you referring to gait?

That sounds great, testing matters. Evaluating structure–yes, gait is part of it, but another part is just how the parts relate to each other. This article by Chris Zink (another sports vet) talks about structure and movement: http://pennvetwdc.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/9-Zink.pdf

Basically, you want your dog to move lightly and easily, as if they could continue for years.

Hit the track today because of the 63 degree weather. 8x400. The 5th 400 (as always) asked myself why I am doing this? Subjecting myself to pain?

After the last 400 ----I’m looking forward to the next track workout. Short memory.

Very warm weather here as well - super foggy this morning. Got out for a bit over 6 - finished my run by running down a huge hill by my house and then running back up. Hard way to finish but felt pretty good at the end.

Make note of it on the calendar, yes, low 60’s in Ohio in January! So enjoyed seeing the neighborhood come alive today.

4 mile run - short capris and a tshirt! Could have got away with shorts.

Planned for an 8-mile run today, instead I took a 1-mile walk through downtown San Diego with 40,000 others. After a almost 5 hours on my feet & being cold & rained on, I decided to scrap the run for today but will try to get it in tomorrow.

It sounds like some of you are enjoying nice weather. We have had weeks of rain here - unheard of here in the desert. More on the way next week. I’m so glad I have the gym / treadmill as back up. I don’t think I could do more than 3-4 miles on the treadmill though. Just too dull!

4.3 humid miles for my last Florida run this trip. It’s really windy today. It was still nice to be warm…

Yesterday was a 10 mile run. The distances seem so hard these days and I don’t know why. The weather yesterday afternoon was so nice! The dog got a good 4 mile walk in the afternoon.

I enjoyed reading all the “pros” to treadmill running that everyone offered. I am not a fan, but it was good to hear the positive comments since I will likely be doing all treadmill this week and had not been looking forward to it. I am headed to Isreal this afternoon on the business trip from He!! and it’s very unlikely that I’ll be able to run outside.

Gertrude - I hope all that rain helps with the drought situation.

MOWC - sounds as if you’ve had a nice trip down in Florida!

C3Baker - 10 miles is no day at the beach! I found myself stopping on just a 6 mile run.

Half went ok. I misread the qualifying guidelines for the nyc marathon (my time was within at 1:47 but this specific half doesn’t count - aargh!).

I feel like I learn something from each race. How you don’t need to start running til you cross the start line; when to take fluids; how to sense your own pace and stick to it; when to kick. Runner DD told me that at mile 12 I should give it everything I’ve got. I didn’t have much left but I tried.

Perfect conditions - 48 and foggy. Hope everyone’s having similar weather.

Classof2015 - Sounds as if you had a great race, that’s a pretty nice time! Can you qualify for the NYC marathon with a time from a half marathon? I didn’t know that!

Thanks C3Baker! I was happy with the time. I was hoping to do at least 1:54 (my time for first half of the marathon). Maybe it’s new (allowing half marathon times to qualify) but yes they allow it. I asked fiancé why they only allow certain half marathons and not others; he said they need enough people to police the course to make sure the times are valid. So today’s half was a smaller half - that’s why they didn’t count it.
And even then, entry is not guaranteed - they only give out a limited number of time qualifying spots (and I’m sure they select based on lowest time in your age category). But one bright spot - once I’m 55, I get 5 more minutes for qualifying time (woo hoo!).

Congratulations on a great finish time!

Congrats on your speedy finish, @Classof2015!

Way to go 2015! Smokin’!

I am back in action, but not as fast moving. Worked the race yesterday and was needed as a worker so no temptation to run (my sense of duty is strong). Walked a good 10 k worth of steps getting people and information where they were supposed to be. Swam today with usual crowd and survived. Spin to come, hiding in the back in case I crash and burn.

Congratulations @Classof2015 !

Today is a rest day although my sister and and I took a 5 mile walk this morning and I will be at yin yoga later today.

Funny story involving cake. I may have posted that last week I bought a decorated cake before the Packers game (I don’t really watch football, but H,D and S are big fans). H wanted me to buy another cake today for good luck, but the store was out of them. The ladies in the bakery agreed to custom frost/decorate one for me. I picked it up - and Packers was spelled wrong. They left out the R. I walked away from the bakery department with the cake and then cracked up.

And yes I do plan on eating cake later. I can admit that here.

The bakers must have been rooting for the opposing team!

We popped into our favorite Euro bakery and bought some dessert - cake called Potato. OMG. It was heavenly and portioned just right. It looks like this:

Thanks MOWC, Lizardly, BunsenBurner, FallGirl - love the cake story! Packes just isn’t the same, is it?

On a very flat 5K ATF-certified course (25 feet of gain), perfect weather (50 and cloudy but not rainy), I managed 29:30 (a PR) and first (of six) in my age group. Feeling very tired and more than a little self-congratulatory.
