Congrats @dmd77

Way to go, dmd!!

I finally got back to doing my pushups! Managed my regular 20 (feet on bed) - felt a bit tired by the end, but it was also after a nice, long dinner that involved the abovementioned Potato pastry and some vino.

Congrats to all the runners who raced or even just got outside this weekend. It’s been miserable wet yuck here so no outside riding for me. And to boot, my Kickr indoor cycling trainerhas stopped connecting to all my training apps, ugh.

Had a funny demonstration of the difference in strength between my 32 y.o. son and me last night. I had to reposition a weight tree a bit. Figured I would just grab a set of the arms on the tree, do a bit of a dead lift ( since my dead lift sets are at 250) and move it as needed. Couldn’t budge it. Turns out that with the weights on it, 2 bars in the storage sleeves and the weight of the tree itself, it was about 375 lbs. My son, who was in the studio with me trying out my new stainless steel bar ( he now lusts for it), shook his head at my plight, walked over, and nonchalantly picked the whole thing up and moved it for me. It was pretty funny. For those of you who have seen my Facebook posts of him at his BJJ competitions, he looks pretty unassuming at 5’8" and 155lb. But I swear, as he picked it up, it was like a Bruce Banner transformation in the Hulk movies. I thought his tee shirt was going to shred, lol. Certainly put me in my place :).

Way to go with the push-ups BB!

@MichaelNKat – wow! What an image!

All anecdotes aside, it really reflects the difference between weight training for maximum functional strength and weight training for muscle size and definition. My son does the former. And because his training is not for “show”, he is routinely underestimated in his BJJ competitions when opponents try to rely on strength instead of technique and skill. The science behind it is really pretty interesting for those into strength training.

Went XC skiing yesterday, it was ok conditions. Pretty soft. We could have skied today but declined. It was good for one day, the snow and trails are not in great shape.

We should get back to better (typical winter) weather by the end of next week.

Congrats dmd77! So nice to get an award – good job!

Good work dmd and Bunsen! Michael- geez! That is some big weight to move! Good lesson for us.

My flight is hugely delayed, so it’s going to be a miserable night. Travel is so fun…

5 lb loss!! Finally! Worked my buns off on that Stairmaster. It’s raining cats and frogs in so Cal after a 5 yr drought too! Ironically, I bought duck boots for my trip to South Bend next wk, who knew I would use them at home.

@MichaelNKat Coincidentally, I watched a docu on Netflix last night about male fitness models, purely for educational purposes, of course. It was eye opening to see how hard they train and study bio-nutrition to fine tune their physiques. Also sad to read about Greg Plitt’s tragic death.

We were at my bil’s cabin this weekend and my sil had meals from hello fresh for us to try. She got a coupon code and she is trying to start a business and wanted to see how these meals work out.

I know sabaray has tried these and others have been interested so I thought I would give my opinion on Hello Fresh. The first meal was seared steak with braised cabbage and roasted potatoes. I wasn’t thrilled with this meal. The steak was tough and the potatoes weren’t cooked. I know they should have roasted longer but everything else was done and I was starving. My sil is not a cook, she seemed confused by some of the directions. Also I think the meal would have been better with a better pan to sear the meat. H asked to never have to eat braised cabbage again, I thought it was fine. I cut the potatoes as the directions said, they were not done after 35 minutes. Here’s that meal.

This is the other meal. https://ddw4dkk7s1lkt.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/card/braised-chicken-thighs-w03-aa0698af.pdf?t=20170122145439
I liked it better. Took about an hour to cook. I did quite a bit of prep, to cut all of the vegetables. It was tasty, if I made it again and I might, I would make the couscous with chicken broth. No need to have the olives, they didn’t add much taste. My sil was still confused about the directions. And to cook it, the pan needed to be hot and to braise the chicken it needed to be on higher heat. Things that I know how to do but sil did not.

There was lots of food, we were full both nights. Also the food took longer to cook than the directions and I was cooking on high. But with an electric stove which I don’t have at home.

Oh and sil made one of these little cakes that come with its own pan. Delicious! Surprised how good it was. Surprisingly it had a lot of directions also.

Thanks for letting me give a little review.

Way to go, dmd and Classof2015, those are some awesome achievements! Got to feel good to do well on a race!

Wow, I was just at the rock climbing gym today, and I had to stop a climber and tell her that this might sound weird, but she had the most incredible level of fitness I’d ever seen, and that she looked amazing. I wanted to know what kind of exercise she did to get that look. She looked like a weight lifter without the bulk. Muscles, well shaped, no body fat, but still looked like a woman. Turns out she’s a professional rock climber (recently quit her Microsoft job), and does private coaching. I might take some lessons from her. I’m a little leery of joining one of the women’s climbing groups there, I’ve seen the pictures and they are all in their twenties, I would be definitely not fit in with that group. Then again, a bunch of tech ladies who are into rock climbing…maybe my techie rock climbing son could use a girlfriend?

@SalveMater – 5 lbs is terrific!!! Keep up the good work!

@busdriver11 – so glad there was someone else on our thread who had good news today too! dmd77 did a great job. I would say go for it with the rock climber person. I think that type of exercise is terrific for upper body strength (which honestly for me is a problem zone). Plus the more muscles, the more sexy/lean you look. And if there’s a DIL boost here, so much the better!

Yay Salve. Party time!

Deb- thanks for the good report. I would be very much like your sil.

I got my 8 miles in ahead of what is supposed to be our biggest storm yet. I took wrong turn at one point, ended up on a street that didn’t go through. I could make it back to where I wanted to be by taking a trail up & over a hill, which was fun until I stepped into ankle- deep mud. Ugh - that sucking sound as you pull your foot out of the mud! Now my shoes are in the washing machine & I’m watching the storm come in while snuggled up with my cat.

Yay @SalveMater !

I’m wondering if anyone here has been able to counter the effects of going through menopause with diet and/or exercise. I’m somewhat irritated because I thought the bioidenticals I was taking were going to make it so I didn’t even notice (which happens sometimes), but I am noticing and I don’t like it! :open_mouth: Has anything you’ve done diet and exercise wise helped any of you through this?

^Been struggling with meno issues for 7 yrs. Tried everything. Celebrex helps, mildly, not much though. Sorry cohldn’t offer more help
