@raclut, if you are still interested in a Reformer for home use, here are some links to look at. Note that Stamina, the company making the cheap one you linked to, does make some worthwhile models but at higher prices.
Have you taken any Pilates classes? Before running out and plunking down any money for a home unit, you should take some classes to see whether Reformer work is something you would enjoy and stick with. Also, Pilates is a system of exercise based on very precise form, body alignment and movements. Taking some classes with an experienced professional instructor would help you learn the basics so that you could get the most benefit from home use.
@raclut, what about the Reformer appeals to you? The at-home option you linked has the rebounder - are you looking for cardio, strength building, or a combination of the two? Unless you are on the much, much smaller side, I don’t think that model would be sturdy enough to get an effective workout using the rebounder. It would not be for me - I am 5’7 and 145 pounds. I’ve been participating in Pilates for over two years, taking at least two classes and a private every week. I love it as it’s an exercise I can see continuing with as I age. In studio, we add a jumpboard to the Reformer for the cardio component, but as Michael mentioned it’s really more about form and body alignment, even during those brief cardio sequences. The smallest changes in position can make a huge difference in the difficulty and effectiveness of the exercise.
There’s an online resource of classes - Pilates Anytime - that offers a free 15 day trial. Everything from mat workouts to Reformer to chair, you name it, they have it. It might be worth exploring to see if Pilates is something you would enjoy for the long run.
Classof2015 – The Hokas I wear were designed for pronaters (I think they are Constant), but last I looked they stopped making that model. So, you do have to look for specific models. Or get inserts.
MoWC, I’m with you on the poor eating front. Chocolate and exercise are the two ways I’m dealing with national news. I am eating much much too much chocolate these days.
Yesterday I took a gentle yoga class which was so gentle as to be almost nothing. It was free through my hotel – I was the youngest person there. It wasn’t chair yoga, but almost. I got in a few stretches, but I doubt my heart rate rose much above resting.
raclut- I, too, am not sure what you are looking for with this piece of equipment. From your concern about noise, I was thinking you wanted a cardio piece. If that is the case, and noise is a concern, a smooth elliptical might be the best choice.
I’m agonizing over whether I should run an indoor mile at the local college tomorrow night. My wife (trying to help!) said why don’t you write down the pluses/minuses.
Last big work out day before a travel day so I had to go big. Swam, ran, did gym work out with the whippersnappers. Ohiopublic, always worth it to test yourself against the young uns. I am going to be super sore tomorrow.
Weight training today–worked with a new trainer. I didn’t like him at all–glad I don’t have to pay for a first session. It will be awkward to sign up with another trainer because in my gym you go to the office where all the trainers are to check in and sign off when you buy a training package.
Your trainer should be a good fit. I’m sure you’re not the first one to not mesh with a trainer there Bromfield. The place would rather have your business by having you try someone else instead of you walking away!
Darn cold outside. Just got in and the wind chill is 12. What happened to 55?! Two mile walk for me and then walked the dog. Will try to motivate to do a little weights or at least push ups tonight.
I am bagging tomorrow’s morning run (I’m such a wimp – no one would confuse me for MOWC!). 26 degrees and I’m starting to get that cold coming on feeling (head is heavy, throat has a tickle).
Sorry about the new trainer, Bromfield. I am sure a) you are not the only one to not like this person and b) they are used to it. Maybe you can give some face saving excuse about scheduling?
Bromfield, don’t sweat it. Change trainers. Any trainer who is any good knows that a good match is critical but also very subjective. I tell every new client that part of the purpose of our first session is to get a feel of whether we are a good match for each other. Same deal with my daughter the trainer and all of our trainer friends. You have no reason to be appologetic or awkward. If he doesn’t get it, he shouldn’t be a trainer.
Yesterday I decided to “up my game” and go to a more challenging Barre class. Holy cow - very tough but just slowed down when I needed to and managed to get through it. I had a Pilates session with my trainer this morning (who also taught the Barre class) but had another really good workout. Am tracking my food this month, just trying to get a baseline of what I’m eating and what the ratios are. @MichaelNKat - do you use the premium version of MFP? For some reason I am thinking you did. If so, what are the advantages?
CBB- I just got an invitation to a legal conference in Naples in April. I was supposed to go to PA that weekend, but let me think- the Ritz in Naples or suburban Philadelphia… So I’ll get 3 Florida trips this season.
