Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Way to go Ohio! Sounds like a fun event - especially the selfies and the finish line!

Good job, Ohio!

Wooooo! Ohio rocks!

So good that you popped in, @GertrudeMcFuzz! Hope life will normalize for you soon. I have seen the 7 min workout in the NYT (?), but I have not heard of the app. Interesting! We will get the new phones when the dust settles with the houses etc., and I will definitely start getting useful apps. This sounds like a good one.

@SalveMater, good nutrition and weight management don’t have to be overwhelmingly technical and complicated. If you would like to access a good compendium of information written in plain English, take a look at the USDA’s MyPlate.gov website. The go to the USDA’s Supertracker website. Create a profile for yourself and play around with the MyPlan features to come up with a personalized meal plan. You may need to change the calorie allotment to lose weight (I think it overestimates the allotment) but the cool thing about it is that the program will tell you how many servings of the basic food groups to eat at each meal and give you lists in each food group of healthy foods and portion sizes that constitute a serving. Between that and the plain English educational materials on the MyPlate site and you could be well on your way.

7 miles in 19 degrees starting in the dark up here on the mountain (Monteagle/Sewanee). I was apprehensive because I was running with a younger, faster friend who isn’t good at dropping back to my pace. She means to, but just can’t. I wanted to run about 10:40 pace and we dropped the pace of every mile and finished with average of 10:14 pace. I was really pushing those miles under 10. It felt like a race. Good fresh air and good company, though. One dicey spot where we go over the interstate and have to watch for cars, but then we pick up a nice trail going towards Sewanee.

@MichaelNKat thanks for that info, such a great resource you are!

@MomofWildChild congrats! So amazed by all you runners, jeez if i walked 7 miles I would pass out! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve used the 7 minute workout. I’ve done it at the airport! May have to do it tomorrow which is a long travel day.

Thank you, CC friends! Each time I check in to this thread I am both humbled and inspired. Today, you all got me (and pup) off the couch and out for a run! I’ve had a case of the winter blah’s. I know in my head that I’ll feel good after a workout but sometimes it’s just hard to get dressed and go. Cold and breezy today, but felt okay. I’m glad to have gone.

Spent the last week travelling to MIL’s … drove 825 miles each way, for a weekend trip. :-/ Got in a couple long walks on the beach (brrrr, even in SC) and ran on a hotel treadmill one evening. (That was interesting since the treadmill TV was stuck on “River Monsters” and I couldn’t figure out how to change the channel.). We’re prepping her for a move to a assisted living place in Virginia at the end of the month. Time to check into the Parents Caring for Parents thread…

Cold here this morning - about 18 degrees or so with a little wind - but got out with some friends for 8.5 hilly miles, then ran some errands. Tiring week with lost of workouts. I am making “marathon lasagna” from the Run Fast East Slow cookbook. Sweet potatoes, spinach, turkey…lots of my favorite things.

Bromfield-yes I listened to that NPR broadcast as well. Idad was a huge Tom Brady fan. Older athletes need to take care of their bodies.

Saw this article the other day. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-secret-of-agingand-how-to-slow-it-down-2017-02-03

Did my fourth race–a 6k–in four weekends today and the cumulative fatigue was horrendous. I just felt heavy and slow from the beginning to the end, but didn’t drop out, for which I am very proud of myself. Leaving for home in the morning.

@SalveMater – it’s taken me years to lose my weight, but the nutritionist I saw almost five years ago gave me great advice: the slower you lose it, the easier it is to keep off. Her words were “you want to sneak up on it.”

That’s a lot of races, dmd! It does wear on you!

@MomofWildChild – I keep forgetting to tell you that I found something you said a while back very helpful during the 5k where I set my new PR. You said “all out sprint and just hang on despite the pain” or something to that effect… and when I wanted to slow down, I remembered you said that and kept going anyway. So thanks!

The only interesting thing about doing so many races is that by race four this morning, I just wasn’t even vaguely nervous any more. I’ve managed to figure out what I want to eat and when, how to judge my pace/effort ratio, when to push myself, and what to think during those last few hundred yards when I just want to stop. It’s all gotten really familiar.

Way to go Dmd - and everyone!

That lasagna sounds interesting Sabaray - have you made it before? Unfortunately my H wouldn’t touch it. Lasagna means lots of ground beef or sausage, lots of cheese and no veggies beyond the tomato sauce. :frowning:

I just visited our middle eastern market and picked up an array of tabouli, grape leaves, hummus, garlic sauce, rice with veggies and chicken tawook that I will cook in the cast iron skillet and then finish off in the oven. I’m hungry already!

So much news to catch up on! Way to go ohio – that’s an awesome time!

deb – I envy your skiing every day – I love skiing – such great exercise and (most of the time) it’s really quiet. Just you and the swish of your skis through the powder. Very relaxing and energizing.

Gertrude – good to see you again! Hang in there with work stress. Seems to come in waves, doesn’t it?

dmd77 – that’s a lot of races! Way to go!

salve – good luck with the reunion – the only way I lost weight was running and really reinventing my eating habits – no more 3 squares a day – more like lean protein, water, fruit, more lean protein, vegetables, etc. I really focused on waiting til I was hungry (not bored or because it was 12 noon), eating what I wanted, stopping when I was full. Lots of water of course. You can do it!

JustaMom – good to see you here again too! We are known as the sandwich generation (caring for kids and parents). Then when you add in in-laws, I think we’re like the “Club Sandwich Generation” (there’s an extra layer in there). Good for you for caring for your MIL.

MOWC – 19 degrees! OMG! I ran this morning (late, so it could warm up) at 26 degrees and I was cold!

sabaray – 8.5 miles means you deserve all the lasagna you want! Recipe sounds yummy.

abasket – that sounds delicious! I grew up with a Mediterranean cuisine so that sounds like home to me.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of “Superbowl Eve”

Another day another day skiing. I will have to rest next week, life getting in the way. Did another trail I’ve never done, I’m really challenging myself. I’m a very cautious person, so this is very good for me.

How I envy the middle eastern market, oh how I love it. That and good Chinese food, neither of which I can find here.

Half marathon #9 tomorrow - Surf City in Huntington Beach! I will be up by 4 AM to drive there for a 7:45 start. It looks like we will have nice weather for it. I will relax most of the day afterwards - I can’t wait for that hard-earned afternoon nap.

Then next week I really need to get back on the wagon with my eating. Sigh, how many times have I said that? Anyway, best to keep getting back on rather than give up.

Great job with all the outdoor activities everyone - Spring is on its way!

You go, Gertrude!!

Five mile walk. We are away and I am pretty jet lagged. I decided instead of a short run I’d go for along walk and scope out the area.

That lasagna sounds great.

Good morning all - sending you the good running vibes Gert.

Finally feeling somewhat normal today but trying to rest and not push it. Not yet sure about yoga this afternoon, as I am being cautious after last summer’s pneumonia.

I have been reading through everyone’s posts and second what @Classof2015 said.
