Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I confess that I have never even looked online at the Garmin products and have just stuck with my FitBit which has worked for my needs.

Back at yoga this AM and treadmill yesterday. Still coughing but need to get back into the routine.

^^That was a whopper of a cold/respiratory illness @Fallgirl!

That Fenix is nice looking for sure MK. One of the only small things on me is my wrist/hands. I always have to be careful to not have a watch that is too overbearing.

Haha - I wore my Fitbit to my son’s wedding - my kids said, “are you seriously going to wear that?” - heck yeah, all those dance steps!!! They did end up getting me a wrist corsage so I did oblige and wear it on the same wrist for camouflage.

I thought the watch can be used to display the map on your smartphone that can be mounted on the bike - ? I agree that for fast folks that also would not be of much use.

I didn’t run last night. When we got home the snow was coming down very heavy and it was really windy. I just wan’t interested in trying to run 6 miles in a blizzard. So it was a low activity day for sure. Tonight I have a workout at the gym with my trainer and tomorrow morning will be a run with Back on My Feet.

Wow, that Fenix 5S watch looks incredible! I will be interested in reading users’ opinions once it is out for a while. I could easily see H getting one. For me, it is too big, and I’m realizing that I don’t need something all that complicated. I always run with my phone so maps are easily accessible if I need them.

Thanks, Michael - now I want one! Someone tell Mr. Sabaray Valentine’s Day is coming up - I think he owes me!

Barre class yesterday - good hour of working out. Light weights, high reps for arms, shoulders and back; lots and lots of plies; lots of work on the obliques and abdominals to finish up. I like the variety of exercise and it ties in nicely with Pilates. This morning I had planned to run, but we have really high winds so opted to cross-train with the elliptical. This weekend I am going to two workshops - I hope I survive.

Bunsen, I haven’t seen anything indicating that the maps and navigation functions of the watch can be displayed on a smartphone. Did I miss something?

Michael is still spending our money! When my 235 craps out or I want to change it, I will seriously consider that Fenix 5S. I love the 235, though.

I found a new type of “road ID” called 1bandid. I ordered one, because it straps around your Garmin band or whatever else you are wearing. They have different sizes. HOWEVER, for someone with a small wrist, there is a problem. It takes up too much space on the band and it interferes with the buckling of the strap. It is possible to tuck the end of the strap into the 1bandid, but it isn’t optimal. I still like it, though, and eliminates one thing on my arm while I run.

I emailed the company to offer polite feedback on the issue of smaller wearers and the president emailed me back and was great. He said they know it is a problem and have received comments. They are working on a smaller size. He offered to send me the larger one (bigger loop around) which makes it easier to tuck the extra length of the Garmin strap. I was happy with the customer service and I think I’m going to like the product.

Couldn’t face the 30 degrees and wind this morning so did 3 miles on the downstairs treadmill.

The upper respiratory stuff people around here are getting is lasting for weeks and weeks. I haven’t been hit yet…

Anyone have any experience with purchasing a home AED unit? There’s a bunch of models out there; tough to figure out which ones have features that in practice make them better than others. I’m kinda leaning towards the Heartsine Samaritan 350P

Michael - I would also be interested in one for my office. I looked on Amazon around a year ago and I was seeing 1100-1500? Small price to pay to save a life. Plus the family diner next door to my office building could utilize it as well. I’m going to take a look at the Heartsine.

I’ve also been meaning to get recertification in cpr/first aid.

Our office purchased the Zoll Plus AED. I think one of the selling points was the “coaching” through the process.

Just saw this from Garmin. A “scientific” approach to selecting a fitness tracker:

Ohio, what I like about the HeartSine is that it has the longest warranty and the battery and paddles are a single unit that get replaced periodically in one shot. On others, the paddles and battery are separate units, with different shelf lives, so you have 2 different maintenance schedules to track.

I have nothing to add about AED devices.

My neighbor is a manager at a big box grocery store here. Last summer they had a man collapse at the store and he used the defibrillator. Said it was scary but he had had the training. EMS arrived and called him later to tell him the man survived and wouldn’t have without my neighbor’s help. Neighbor was so happy because there had been some deaths in his family lately and he was so happy that this guy wasn’t one.

The snow is terrible here with the rain earlier in the week. It’s been a wierd winter. I went to a local women’s ski night last night but I was the only one who showed up. I do not like going to these things but I guess they had people show up at the other night. Even the instructor was a no show. I showed up because my sil said that you get instruction with the ski night. Anyways, the owner of the shop skied with me and she is really nice. And a really good skier but I wish that when I called to confirm the event they told me the instructor wasn’t coming.

I’m an introvert and don’t like group events because I know I’ll probably be the worst or slowest person there. My H who loves these things encouraged me to go. Now I went, pretty sure I won’t go back. But in skiing news, I was happy that I was able to ski in icy conditions.

@MichaelNKat, how much snow did you get? Any skiing in your future?

^^^^I am your twin introvert.

Wonder if they knew the instructor was not coming - if so , they should have called.

They knew she wasn’t coming, they told me she had a wrist injury. The girl I skied with was super nice and said it was so fun to relax and ski without training. And I bought myself a skirt that I look super cute in  https://www.rei.com/product/888497/swix-romsdal-quilted-skirt

LOVE the skirt - you little ski bunny you!!

That skirt is cute! Deb,you are far braver than I am. I wish I could ski. I wish I had the courage to try!

Great skirt! I have a couple of little quilted running skirts, but I haven’t worn them this season. I’ve been too wimpy to get out on a lot of the cold days!

sabaray- you could cross country ski just fine! It’s fun and beautiful. The problem is having to get off of a ski lift on those skis! I haven’t downhill skied since 2007 when I had a slow fall and broke my knee (tibial plateau fracture) which was not a fun thing.

Ha! I took the “scientific” test to determine which Garmin tracker is for me – did the test twice and got 2 different answers. (Some of the questions change each time.) That new Garmin is (1) too big for my wrist and (2) too expensive. I’ll do some online research/comparisons of various trackers – I have 30 days to use my 25% off coupon from Fitbit.

Took the pup for a walk this morning, and then H and I just walked into town to buy something to carry home all the great shells I’ve found since we’ve been here. My hip is still a little sore, but not too bad.

We’re gleefully missing the big snowstorm hitting New England …

I am still very happy with my Apple Watch. I have small wrists, and it fits so much better than the Fitbit HR and I like the way it looks. I also like that the Apple environment doesn’t emphasize steps like the Fitbit does – I’m paying more attention now to active calories and and exercise minutes, which is probably more important than number of steps. I’m looking forward to getting some other watch bands for it.

I still try to wear the Fitbit at night to measure sleep, since I charge the Apple Watch at night. My Fitbit One is dead, or I’d carry that with me just to keep up with the Fitbit community.

I squeezed in a run yesterday – the one nice day between rain and snow. This morning I went to the gym and did some cardio before the snow started in earnest.

Shut up, CBBBLinker. (Boston is reporting blizzard conditions and schools are closed tomorrow, too, I hear.)
