My MA town got about 10 inches of snow today–yoga studio cancelled classes except for earliest class this am. Got on H’s treadmill and walked uphill for 30 minutes. Looking forward to a trip to Vero Beach at the end if the month!!
I use a Garmin 235 runner’s watch to track workouts, and I use a Fitbit Flex 2 to track overall activity. The Flex 2 is tiny. I did not like the plastic ugly band it came with, so I sewed myself a few elastic wristbands that I tuck the Flex into. I can slide the band up to get it out of the way when I washing my hands or cooking, or take it off and put it in a pocket if I have something else (like my runner’s watch) on my wrist. I stopped wearing a watch when I stopped teaching, but if I wanted to wear a jewelry-type watch and use a step tracker, I’d keep the Flex 2 and just tuck it away (pocket).
I did the slip and slide walk to the subway this morning (what a workout!). Fiance did his usual 6 mile run. With spikes. He should be on here – not me
I am THRILLED that we did not get this round of snow! About an inch last night but that’s it.
A 30 minute series of cardio, squats, push-ups, lunges, etc. - frigid outside today!
Just enough snow here to make the roads slick, but the winds are frigid! It was nothing but a big tease @deb922, no skiing for me :(.
No skiing here either. All passes are closed tonight. Horizon Air is probably making a killing on those flights from Eastern WA to SEA. Wet and windy here.
Three mile run. I wanted more, but running on brick sidewalks is hard on me. I’ll get to take a long walk later.
Ran 2.0 slow miles on the treadmill this AM. Hoping to get outside this weekend.
Awhile back I posted that I will be doing the Avon 39 in May. I have finally gotten my fundraising started (which is the part I dread- the walking sounds awesome). At that time a few folks were interested. PM me if you still are (no obligation of course
).
I hope you’re enjoying an awesome vacation somewhere, Lizardly. I’ve been trying to plan one - I found a number of resorts that offer Pilates on the beach! Mr. Sabaray isn’t as excited about those as I am for some reason.
Pilates training this morning - lots of work opening up the back and hips. Plus the usual rounds of core torture. I always feel better after I’m done.
This Barre workout came to me by email this morning - suggested for runners.
Well, I’ve been doing some online research re: activity trackers. I can definitely say, “I am confused!” There are lots of comments on the Fitbit Forums about quality issues with the Charge HR, which is what I have (that’s on it’s last legs.) OK, fine – they don’t make it any longer, so that’s not an option. I’m not finding much about the quality of the newer model, the Charge 2. (Some comments about problems getting it to sync, but not w/ Apple products, which is what I use.) From what I’ve read, the most viable alternative is the Garmin Vivosmart HR+. Apparently it’s a little chunkier than the Fitbit. I’ve read 1 review that says it’s a “near miss” from Garmin and another that says it’s the “best ever.”
Anyone on here have comments about Garmin quality? I can get the Fitbit at a lower price with the coupon, but would be willing to pay more if a Garmin would last longer.
Last day in FL; leaving in the morning. Hoping to dodge snowstorms getting home.
A slower 3.5 mile run this morning with Back on My Feet. H is talking about wanting to do 6 miles tonight to make up for the run we missed on Wednesday with the snow storm. I’m game if the weather is OK. It was cold and pretty windy this morning but it should be warmer after work tonight. Tomorrow’s training plan calls for 13 miles but we will have to split the run. We have a 3 mile race that is part of a series of training races leading up to the Mini Marathon in May, so we’ll have to run another 10 miles later after we get home. We don’t really need to do the training races, but we have a lot of new Back on My Feet members who are training to run their first half marathon in May and the training races are really helpful at both building endurance and confidence in these new runners. So it’s fun to go and run with them and help provide encouragement.
CBBBlinker - enjoy your last day! I hope the weather isn’t an issue in your travels home.
sabaray - ooh, I want to hear more about your vacation plans! With a wedding this summer, any disposable income has been disposed of, so I’ll be doing my vacations vicariously this year!
CBB- I think Garmin quality is very good. My first tracker was a Garmin (The first Vivo…whatever). I liked it. I also like my FitBit Alta. I have had Garmin running watches since the very first GPS watch came out, and have never had any but small, occasional issues.
Had to be at work really early this morning, didn’t sleep well, but managed 1.2 miles on the treadmill before I got going. Longer run tomorrow.
Garmin is pretty reliable. Only occasional issues. Had a hard time accepting the difference between optical and chest strap HR, but overall it is 95% there.
I found out today that I was chosen to be a “Heathy U”(university) Champion" at my workplace. Our health and wellness department asked for applications from interested individuals. From what I understand we will help promote health and wellness activities/events on campus and within our departments. I’ll have to go to a orientation to find out more. Best of all…FREE University 1/4 zip!!!
Never hurts to have a few things in life to keep you accountable - maybe this will be one of my weapons.
@CBBBlinker, I have a Garmin Vivosmart HR. Can’t tell you much about it specifically because I never use it (I discovered I’m not a fitness band person at all). As a general matter, I’ve been very satisfied with the Garmin products I use for cycling. If after you do your research you decide you want a Vivosmart HR, send me a PM. Mine is just gathering dust and I’ll make you a deal you can’t refuse :).
Granted I seem to be the only person with this problem – but I returned my Vivosmart because the step count was off by 50%. I bought it at Best Buy, which has a really good return policy – they take back opened boxes with used equipment without a restocking fee. I thought the Vivosmart fit my small wrist a little better than the Fitbit did, but not by much.
After trying 3 different products, I’ve concluded that you have to figure out what works for you – that reviews often are not helpful.
If Michael has a large Vivosmart HR and you have small wrists, his may not work for you (even if it is a great deal).
Swam 1.5 miles today!
Congrats on being chosen a champion, abasket (of course, you were always a champion in our eyes). I think they made a good choice.
Power yoga class today. Scheduled an Orange Theory class for next week (studio just opened near me)–class is free.
Started using my Fitbit Charge 2–so far II like it. I never had a problem with my Fitbit Charge HR–other than getting a rash when I strapped it on too tightly. Got the new Fitbit because I wanted the reminder to move every hour. Charge 2 comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. It’s supposed to have a more sophisticated heart rate monitoring system. Will report back after I have worn it longer.
Look forward to your report, @Bromfield2! I mentioned that my Fitbit is on its last legs… Cats are a major destructive force.
That’s awesome, @abasket - they made an excellent choice!
There is no better candidate than abasket, I agree.
