You must feel very relieved, MOWC. Regardless of their age, dealing with a child’s injuries or illness from a distance is a parental nightmare. Glad things turned out ok.

As my mom used to say, little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems. So true. Hugs, MOfWC.

Weights tonight. I am tired.

Glad to hear he is doing ok. Still, biking accidents are scary.

Relieved to hear that your S is OK, @MomofWildChild

Regular Sat AM yoga yesterday, then a 2 mile run outside in the beautiful weather and later a mile walk with the dog (about as much as she can handle these days). Today’s plan is for a long walk and weights.

I would love to try a meditation class @Bromfield2 , but I find that my mind wanders even during my regular classes.

So now that we know that WC is relatively ok, having escaped with a lot of road rash and bruising (don’t forget the Second Skin bandages for the road rash), here’s a tale of my epic bike crash idiocy.

I was 40 years old and out mountain biking. I encountered two 20 year olds and immediately thought “I’m 40, they’re 20, that means I can go twice as fast as them.” So we raced. I beat them up a very technical hill and at the top, in my jubilation, took a jump, mislanded it and pancaked myself at speed. When I regained consciousness, I looked up and litterally saw a horse’s ass above my head. My immediate thought was “I know I’m hurt but this could get a lot worse.” Fortunately, the horse restrained itself.

I managed to walk my bike back to my car with a broken collar bone and separated shoulder and somehow got my bike up on the roof rack with one arm. I then called my wife and told her I would be home soon but needed to make a couple of stops first. She asked where. I told her that I need to stop at the bike shop because the rear wheel on my bike was a little bent. She asked “And then where?” with great suspicion in her voice. I told her “The ER”, to which she responded with her articulate communication skills “Wrong sequence a**hole.” So, being two lawyers, we negotiated and agreed I would drive home, she would drop me off at the ER, take my bike to the bike shop and then come back to the ER. So that’s what we did. She got back to the ER just as a nurse was about to start scrubbing the dirt out of all the abrasions on my left side. With a wicked gleam in her eye, my wife said “Wait, that’s my job.”

After the ER, we returned to the bike shop for me to check on my bike and replace my helmet which had done an admirable job of preventing my brains from becoming anymore addled than they normally were. From the bike shop, we returned home where I promptly changed into scraggly cut off shorts and an equally scraggly cut off former dress shirt, opened a bottle of wine, and sat on the floor in front of the TV wearing my new helmet just in case I had an alcohol induced mishap.

About an hour later, the doorbell rang. I staggered to the door, dressed as I was, bottle in hand, other arm in a sling, with my helmet on my head. I opened the door to find my wife’s out of town cousins, who had never met me before, standing there for our dinner engagement about which my wife and I had totally forgotten in all the excitement. Introductions were made and I explained that I had broken my collar bone and separated my shoulder. They asked when it had happened with a look of absolute incredulity on their faces as I looked at my watch and told them “just a few hours ago.” They asked if we wanted to cancel dinner plans and I said absolutely not. By then I was really hungry. So we went out for dinner. But for some reason, no one would let me drive.

Wow Michael! What a story! Scary but funny about the horse. Glad you got to go to dinner!

It’s been just over a year since son’s last serious wreck where his mountain bike failed. There are still settlement negotiations going on with that. Broken hand and $6K in dental work.

I really don’t handle this stuff well. I hope I can manage my run today.

Our kids will make us insane. I look at my son’s cauliflower ear and hear all his stories about serious injuries at his BJJ competitions and I just hold my breath every time he competes. But we can’t control them notwithstanding how much our parental instincts are to put our feet down and say “no, you can’t do this anymore.” Can you imagine just how quickly we would age if our two sons ever met and planned a joint activity?

Oh God. What a thought!

“Wrong sequence a**hole.”

I love your wife MK!

That is an EPIC story of “I think I can” - and you did, but at a cost! That story, a keeper to tell.

Yesterday sunny and a high of 68 degrees. February 18, in northern Ohio. Unbelievable. Great for those of us who want to be outside - not so great for people who rely on winter activities, heating/cooling business (one of my brothers), snow plowing, etc.

I ran in shorts and a tshirt. I don’t know how they look on my 57 year old body but I really like the Athleta longer shorts @FallGirl recommended. I did 5 miles and some change! That’s one of my longer runs - you know me, I’m more of a 3 miler for fitness. At least I know I can finish out the 8K race I have early April!

Low 60’s again today. One walk in this morning. I’ll see how the rest of the day goes and might get out there again - just cause.

I was trying to nap yesterday and couldn’t because I kept thinking about WC! Glad it’s nothing major, MOWC. So scary especially when they’re far away.

MoWC, so glad WC is okay.

MNK, that is hilarious!

I am a nervous cyclist. Never trust my brakes, never trust my bike handling skills, most of all, never trust the distracted drivers on the road. When I train for a tri, I do a lot of spin classes and spend a lot of time in front of the TV on the indoor trainer. I wish we had better bike trails where I live. It wouldn’t eliminate all risks (MNK!!!), but would make it safer.

My bike crash story: son1 and I were doing a tri together. He started in an early wave, was way ahead of me. Then I saw him on the side of the road with his bike upside down. I slowed and asked if he was okay, could I help. He waved me on, saying “No, no, I am fine.” Bad mom that I am (and winning my AG!) I kept going.

Next time I saw him was on the run. He was bleeding profusely from his knee and elbow, but running. Again I stopped and said how are you. He said fine (and was moving fine) and we both kept going.

We met up at the finish. I did win my AG, but didn’t stay for awards—taking a closer look at S1 when we were both standing still, I knew I had to take him to the ER.

Nothing broken, just road rash and bruising. Turns out his chain came off and he crashed, skidded on the road. He explained that “you wouldn’t know how to fix it, mom, so I just let you go.” We bought him a new bike and retired the thirty year old one he had been riding. He makes fun of me for not stopping as this instance is one in a long line of me saying “just get up and rub some dirt on it.”

Lizardly - that’s a great story! You are one tough mom with an even tougher kid!

Gorgeous here - in the '60s. Ran in shorts and a long sleeved top (fiancé said I’d be too hot in capris and he was right). Saw a girl running in shorts, a string bikini top, and flip flops! And she was um not thin. At all. I don’t know what I felt sorrier for - her feet or her breasts.

I had a good 10 mile run this morning. It is beautiful this afternoon so very shortly I will take the dog out and we’ll go do clean-up on our section of the trail and get a good walk in. I feel sorry for H who is stuck in a hospital room with his dad on this beautiful weekend. FIL seems to be doing better today so I expect H will drive home this evening.

Lizardly - I love that story about your son at the tri competition! That is hilarious and I can imagine he enjoys bringing it up for laughs.

abasket - Great job on the 5 mile run! You will be terrific in your 8K!

MOWC - Glad WC is OK.

Seems like it is a normal reaction after a bike crash to think bike first and body second.

Thanks, all. I am still pretty shell-shocked and he seems to think it’s all no big deal. The worst injury is the huge trauma bruise on his shoulder where he hit the pavement. It isn’t road rash since it didn’t tear his jersey, but it is oozing. The hospital didn’t clean his wounds or give him much in the way of instructions.

I did manage to do my 10 (10.1) mile run this morning, but I didn’t get started until 10 am. It was 56-63 degrees while I was out there. Really nice for February. I wore a Nuu Muu dress and a shrug with long sleeves that I took off at 3 miles and tied around my waist. Glad it’s done.

Lizardly- good story. Glad you didn’t sacrifice your age group win!

Classof15- Flip flops? Geez. Good run, C3B!

“I ran in shorts and a tshirt. I don’t know how they look on my 57 year old body…”

Abasket, I guarantee that runners and other exercisers think they look on you just fine and react to you very positively - I bet you are not wearing flipflops for running!

Warm here, too! The snow is melting like crazy, which is fine with me. H and I walked to church this morning. It’s not very far, but with one exception, every time I’ve suggested it in the past, H has said, “No.” Well, now the car in the garage is his newest sports car, and he didn’t want to take it out. My car is parked on the street, but if we took that there was a high probability the space would be gone when we got back. Probably 20% of the street parking spaces are snowed in, decreasing the already limited supply of spots. #UrbanLivingProblems!

Speaking of H – he gained 10 lbs. while we were in FL. He was shocked – and very uncomfortable when he had to put on a suit for a board meeting this week. Now he’s on a “drink black coffee all day, then eat dinner” diet. He’s already lost 3 lbs. – but it’s not a healthy way to do things. Fortunately I lost several lbs in FL.

So glad to hear your S is OK, @MomofWildChild.

Lizardly, loved your story! What is it with our sons? It’s like they all are ADHD and self medicate through the adrenaline rush of high risk activities, lol! (At least that’s the way it was with my son, like when I caught him as a teenager skateboarding down the roof of our house and launching himself off to the ground below. At least he was good enough to Ollie over the gutter and not take it down.)

@MOWC – yes! Fiance saw her too. He said he thought she was pregnant but I think she was just overweight. And she was chugging up the hill so hey whatever works!

The weather must be inspiring all of us because I did 9 miles for the first time since the half marathon weeks ago.

MnK – skateboarding down the roof? Sounds like something my son would do.

On another topic, I wish DD (at her first job in NYC) had a running group or team like MOWC has at work. She ran in college and it would be a natural friend group. I asked her; she said she’s pretty there isn’t one. Maybe she could start one.
