Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

^ D works in NYC and while they don’t have a team at her office her company participates in some corporate challenge where they run in the park. She has done it the last 2 years. It’s coming up sometime in the spring. She has met people that way.

My walk today was a little over 8 miles.

Thanks FallGirl – I’ll tell her to check out corporate challenge. I remember running in it back in the '80s. Wasn’t sure it was still around. That’s a nice long walk!

Wow 8 mile walk! I would do that maybe if there was ice cream somewhere along the line…

I did end up with a purposeful 3.5 mile walk - was able to walk the golf course path near our house - not usually possible in most good weather because, well, because people are golfing! Even saw two deer!

Short walk today (3 miles) outside. All the snow is melting!!
Fallgirl: it’s really easy for your mind to wander during meditation. Instructor said you should try to refocus when that happens and that it would happen frequently.

So glad I don’t have a son who bikes. I have a daughter who is not much of a risk taker.

I’m a very nervous biker. I generally stick to flat paved bike trails. The most memorable biking accident I’ve had was in southeast Asia on a daylong tour. First I was bitten on the ankle by a dog (which meant I had to get rabies shots). Then about 5 minutes later the bike overturned on sand and I badly twisted that same ankle. (That tour did not get good reviews from me on trip advisor.)

Today I took a long walk with my husband, and then went for a swim.

2nd day of two a days. (Was off the last week and a half - bronchitis)

Mornings- spinning and swimming. Afternoons- running.

Have the indoor triathlon in 2 weeks.

MOWC, just got on here and saw your posts about the crash. Hope WC sees another doc for follow up. Sounds like the shoulder may need another look.

Was 73 degrees here in DC yesterday. Took our dog out for a long walk yesterday,. She and I both survived.

It has been beautiful weather here this weekend - and supposed to stay warm most of the week.

D has been here visiting for the long weekend - Saturday we spent the day engaged in retail therapy at a beautiful outdoor mall a few hours from us. Won’t bore the gentlemen but there were plenty of Lulu acquisitions. Nice day. Sunday we went to a TRX/Pilates class at the studio which we both enjoyed. This morning I did a very easy four miles, keeping an eye on heart rate. Plenty of pup walks in there as well!

I bet WC is sore today. Hope he’s taking care of himself.

Sounds like a great weekend, sabaray!

He’s in a little bit of denial and acting like it is “no big deal”. The shoulder bruise (jersey didn’t rip- so not road rash) is oozing and somewhat of a concern. He was given no information on wound care at the hospital and they didn’t clean the wounds. I’m not impressed with that. He’s focused on bike repair now. Probably about $2000 damage to components but the frame is OK, miraculously. He wanted the bike for a combination business/training trip to Florida late this week but he’ll have to take another bike. I think he’s going to have Philly Bikesmith work on the wrecked bike while he’s gone. I’m still not back to normal, so I’m glad it’s no big deal to him!

Quote I saw this morning:

“Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do. Not a punishment for what you ate.”

Happy Monday!

I love that quote, abasket!

Love that , too @abasket .

Glad you were able to get out and walk yesterday CD.

@sabaray I would love to hear what you and your D bought at Lulu! I am afraid to look at the website as I have spent a lot of money lately.

Beautiful morning here. Went out for 4 miles - 2.5 run, 1.5 walk.

Love that, @abasket! It’s much better to approach exercise from a positive angle like that. Especially for people like me, locked in a crazy love triangle with Ben & Jerry…Is Coffee Buzz Buzz the best flavor ever? Close tie with Chunky Monkey. I know C3B is with me on this one

Will get out soon for a run. Trying to get some speed work in before next 4 mile race on Saturday.

Great quote, abasket!

MOfWC, it is very likely that the hospital would have just washed the wound with tap water and told him to keep it open… This is apparently the sop now, no special treatment. Most importantly - is he current on his tetanus vaccination? That was the major concern in the ER when they took the piece of glass out of my foot (the wound was washed with tap water and loosely covered, but I got a couple of steristrips because it was more than skin damage). I highly recommend seeing a doctor just to make sure he is taking care of the wound correctly.

@abasket’s terrific quote really got me thinking. I think we’d all benefit from a reminder that fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. We all started somewhere for a variety of reasons. Weight loss, health, general fitness, competitive drive.

I rarely say much of anything about posts I find objectionable - if I don’t agree with something I usually ignore it. I don’t like conflict. But I feel very strongly that we shouldn’t become a place where it’s okay to single out or criticize people who are making an effort to improve their health and wellness, regardless of how much they weigh or what they’re wearing. My daughter is “not thin” but she reads this thread, specifically for MichaelNKat’s posts. I’m sure by many people’s standards here, I am “not thin”. We’re both working hard at weight loss/maintenance and fitness. What if my D was the woman running in flip flops and a bikini top? What if that woman was me? It might not be conventional attire, but it seems to be working for that runner. More power to her.

Wise words sabaray.

Since not all exercise goes so great, here’s mine. Yesterday I ran a whole mile and a half lol! Mostly I am out of shape but I am having trouble breathing deeply. Bruised a couple of things in the wreck and it’s still hurting. Not much but running requires breathing that is different than run of the mill breathing. Lol!

I walked today, tons of neighbors were out and about. It’s beautiful but I’d rather be skiing. I know I’m in the minority ;).

Got the payout amount of my car, it was disappointing but expected. After back and forth and too much thinking, I bought another Subaru Outback! Decided not to go with the eyesight, it’s a long story but I talked with someone (not a salesman) associated with the dealership and he didn’t care for it. Said it’s great in concept but he thought it wasn’t perfected yet and he didn’t recommend it. I was happy for his honesty.

“What if my D was the woman running in flip flops and a bikini top?”

I personally am very happy to see all body shapes or sizes on the trail, but I will continue to be critical of such things because for me, it is not about vanity, body shaming, or image, it is about safety and sustainability of the exercise plan. I do not think it will be working for that runner no matter what her size and shape is… Running in flipflops is simply not sustainable in the long run. Ditto doing high impact exercise without the good support for the girls, because it can lead to tissue tear and serious damage. There is a reason tennis players and runners pack their upper parts well. It is sad when bigger bodies are afraid to go to the mall and shop for the right equipment and then wear it.

BTW, there are plenty of rail thin ladies on the trail here who jiggle… Small breasts can get damaged, too. That’s why I always post about sports bras - it is a comfort and safety issue.

Okay, carry on. Clearly I am the only one troubled by this. Later, guys!

I so appreciate the honesty of your post Sabaray - here it is not conflict, it is OPINION. That’s the great thing about this thread (not always the case in some other CC threads!). You should feel comfortable giving yours. It is valued.

I do agree that my only thought about the flip flops was safety! And damage to feet!

Actually I was horrified by anyone running in flip flops. Just need to support those feet and protect them too. It seems dangerous to me.

When I was out yesterday I saw lots of folks all ages, all sizes ,lots of diversity They were running, walking, pushing strollers, on bikes, walking dogs…I love seeing anyone out and moving.
