Getting my plan ready for the gym in a little while. Planning to do 15 on the stair master, 15 on the rowing machine, then 20 on one of those stationary bikes that are suppose to simulate a real ride. I would like to eventually work back up to 45 minutes on the stair master and maybe 30 on the rowing machine. I don’t know if I can handle that on the rowing machine, though. That machine I definitely get bored on!
classof2015- thanks. It was my own 5k on the treadmill, but it was one of the better runs I’ve had in a few weeks.
sabaray- I do, and I’m trying to drink more throughout the day. The issue I have during the work week is that when I was doing a good job with that earlier in the school year, I needed to use the restroom more. However, I had no one to watch my class for a few minutes. I don’t get a break until almost the end of the day so there were definitely a few days where I had to send a kid around to others teachers’ rooms to beg someone to come watch them, which is funny and not funny at the same time.
About to head out for a run - need to get it done! Like Lizardly I think I need this run for some “mind therapy”! Sometimes the plate of worry just seems too full!
Nahnah–your break schedule at work does not seem healthy! I’m a teacher too but with older kids so sometimes I have to run to the bathroom between classes even though then I’ll be a minute late to let the next group in–which is frowned upon, but what can you do? I have my lunch break right in the middle of the day though and can also go during my prep period so usually I am fine. If I had no break for too many hours, I would complain to admin about the need to have scheduled breaks for health reasons!
^^^This! Do you have any kind of wellness initiative at your school? This would be a good point to bring up - keeping yourself hydrated is a good strategy for a healthy, alert teacher to teach! Much better in the break room than coffee!
3.25 miles done! A little chilly and GLOOMY but done. Not ready to start another work week…
nahnah12 – that’s great you did your own 5K on the treadmill! I love the idea of creating specific time or distance goals. One idea about an alternative beverage (my downfall is wine, not soda as much) is to mix cranberry juice or o.j. with seltzer and put it in a pretty glass (my “mock-tail” as it were) with a wedge of lime. Healthier and more thirst-quenching. Hard to do at work though.
Thanks, bunsenburner and abasket! The cold air was tough. I had bought a “buff” (thanks to the good advice here) but it was a little too lightweight to warm up the air sufficiently. There’s that point where you look at the medic tent and wonder if they just have Band Aids and Tylenol or serious stuff like oxygen tanks lol.
Lizardly – I love the “thinking run” concept. Some runs are good for clearing out all the stuff you can’t get your head around during other activity.
classof2015- I forgot to comment on your 5k! I’m hoping to one day come in at less than 30 minutes. You inspire me!
Yes, my schedule this year is awful. I’m hoping to be able to transfer this year (for various reasons). If I am not able to, I’m definitely bringing this up. The kicker is my principal is apparently a health coach!! (I have no idea how she’s a health coach. She’s the one who always tells me how she’s running on a stress fracture. And don’t you need some type of training for this?)
I was able to make it to the gym this afternoon, and I switched up my plan. I did 15 on the stairs, 15 on the bike, then 15 on some weights/strength training stuff! I forgot about that last part. Usually I get so focused on cardio I forget about the weights. There is a nice little circuit at my gym that’s good for starting out. It has some arm and leg stuff. Last summer I was good about going to that a few times a week and I saw some improvement. Very humbling to have to start back from scratch! I have another cross training day on the schedule this week so I will need to hit that area up again.
Thanks, MOWC! Hope your son is healing and your daughter is basking in her 1:53 time!
Hey nahnah12 – appreciate it! I have gotten so much inspiration from this thread – you can do it – I am not the expert on training plans but once you get into a regular routine, I bet Sabaray or MOWC could guide you with advice re: speed work and endurance.
That sounds like a good circuit. It sounds like you are on a good path to a solid fitness plan.
Thanks FallGirl! Rooting for you on 03/19! That’s why I sign up for races too – to motivate me. I’m not the pacing expert, but I would say you should get your pace and keep it within maybe 1/4 mile of the start. So glad your S said that – so sweet! The highest praise I get from my S is “my friends think you’re a beast!” Which initially I took the wrong way…
I spent a lot of time on the elliptical the last 2 frigid days. As a result, I got a lot of reading done. I’m reading a very hefty biography of George Washington, which is taking forever, so I appreciate the elliptical time. He’s now in his second presidential term, so I know I’m nearing the end.
I got really sick when I first upped my dose of Vitamin D – my doctor blamed it on the brand I was using. She said it really does matter which brand you use.
My doctor wants to see my vitamin D level at between 50-75 ng/ml. I average around 5000 IU/day.
(Note - some labs report vit. D levels as nmol/l [nanomolar/liter], the equivalent nmol/l number is 2.5x higher than the ng/ml number. So make sure you check the units on your test.)
While I don’t feel different from having a high vitamin D level, I get sick much less than I used to. I went from getting bronchitis and bad colds multiple times a year to pretty much never getting sick - maybe once in the last 3-4 years. So I believe it has provided a huge boost to my immune system.
I use Healthy Origins 5000 IU D3 (only take D3, do not take D2!) softgels, in addition I take a K2 supplement along with magnesium, and the K2 supp adds more D3.
Btw - it is quite hard to have a vitamin D level that is dangerously high (> 150 ng/ml), unless you suffer from some rare disease like sarcoidosis. To get to this high of a level requires taking 10,000 IU+/day for 3+ months.
I take a lot of supplements. If I could only take one, it would be vitamin D.
I take 1000 IU D3 in the AM and and (supposedly) the multi I take in the evening has another 1000 IU. I started this after my doctor told me I was low on Vitamin D. Probably need my level checked again.
@fireandrain where is the “love” button when I need it? Copied and pasted that article so I can read it again. And yes, I am one of those people .
Had an exciting hike on Friday! I went to a park that I have been to before and thought I would try a new trail. It was not a good decision! I got all turned around and ended up getting lost.I wandered for about 2 hours and thank heavens saw another person running through the woods. He stopped and gave me directions so I continued. After another hour on the trails I was lost again! I tried to use my phone’s GPS but it just drained my battery. I got off one text message to H to tell him where I was hiking and then it died. Thank heavens the young man came and found me again when he realized he gave me the wrong directions! What a nice guy! I was so lucky that someone else was out on the trails!
Thanks fireandrain – and thanks for that great article. Good reminder to not judge anyone for anything. I remember one girl at college saying I was “obsessed” because I ran every day. I felt like saying actually it’s how I deal with anxiety and depression so yes I guess I am obsessed with keeping those at bay.
NorthMinn – scary but with a good ending! I’ve hiked in trails like that and it is VERY easy to get lost. And phones often don’t work or die quickly.
Yikes NorthMinn - we need to get you a homing beacon or something. Glad you made it out of the woods safely.
Classof2015, you’re in good company here - I think a fair number of us “run to burn off the crazy”. I know I do! Congrats on another excellent race result.
Easy 7 miles this morning. I say easy but it felt long and I was tired. But it’s done.
