Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

3.5 mile purposeful walk at the park along the river on a trail at our Metropark with my beautiful daughter!!!

More skiing today. Warm up tomorrow with rain on Monday. But today was great.

Hmm, nahnah12, that sounds like a lot of sugar. Generally the only things I dtink are coffee, wine and water…which probably isn’t the best, either.

Soda is a real nemesis. If you drink regular soda, loaded with added sugar. Not good. If you drink diet soda, a very weird brain chemical reaction occurs. Your brain expects calories from the sweet taste. When none are present, your brain sends chemical signals to eat more. This is something that’s been discussed before but is worth reiterating. Legit studies have shown that diet soda can impede weight loss and even promote weight gain simply because your brain in response will create hunger signals. And to repeat a story I’ve also told before, once upon a time, I was rebuilding a 1951 Harley Davidson. I had a bunch of nuts and bolts that were frozen together. I put them in a glass of Coke to get the corrosion off and free them up. I forgot about them and left them sitting overnight. The next morning, I no longer had nuts and bolts, just misshapened lumps of metal. Here’s to soda and your intestinal tract!

As long as you’re drinking more water than any of the other two beverages, I think you’re okay, bus!

nahnah12, I have to agree with bus on the sugar intake. I’d try to cut down on that somewhat. After my run yesterday I had 4 ounces of chocolate milk and at breakfast had a diet Coke for a treat - along with plenty of water! You will feel better and run better if you can cut down.

Today is a rest day for me, I’m trying to be better about those. Just had a nice walk with the pups, hoping to talk Mr. Sabaray into a nice walk later on.

What Vitamin D range do you shoot for and what brand supplement is best if any?

My doctor recommended Jarrow and Nature Made for vitamin D. I take a lot - between 4-5000 IU per day - because test results related to my osteoporosis.

I buy the jumbo bottle at Costco - 4000 IU per day, again medically indicated. I’d recommend a physical and blood work to see what you need! Initially I had to take a prescription mega-dose for 6 weeks as I was really deficient. This is just maintenance.

Just to illustrate the need for dose individualization, both Mr. B and I take 2,000 units daily. Mr.'s blood tests showed deficiency, and his doctor put him on that dose. Because Mr. and I have a similar exposure to daylight, I started taking the supplement, too, at the same dose, and now our tests come back within the normal range. I buy a large jar of Nature Made at Costco. If you have not been tested, I recommend asking your doctor about it.

My serum level was 22 and my PCP didn’t comment. I understand the level should be at least 32 but I know one doctor who believes >40 is essential. I have been taking 4000/day for a couple of weeks of some generic brand

I get the COSTCO Vitamin D, too. I take 2000 units and a little more that is in my calcium pill.

I’m in Henderson, NV now at 2400 feet altitude (noticeable to me). Had a hilly 5.3 mile run and was quite a bit faster than I was 2 years ago on the same route. Not bad for getting older.

For those who are taking vitamin d supplements (medically indicated or not), did you notice a difference after starting it?

I mirror MOWC. I take the 2000 units generally daily and get a little extra in my daily calcium pill. Also taken for osteoporosis issues as directed by a physician.

Notice a difference? Test results may show a difference but I don’t think there is any physical difference I feel.

There are some studies that show less aggressive prostate and breast cancers in people with very high levels of D. The immunology MD I know feels strongly that higher levels of D help the immune system.

I have only been supplementing for several weeks and so far don’t feel any different

My friend who teaches across from me was just talking about this. She said she’s starting back up on her Vitamin D supplements. According to her, she felt great after taking them last time, but when she ran out she didn’t get any more. She’s starting back up in hopes of feeling better again.

This week I’m determined to really focus on taking little steps to improve my diet. I know what I’m getting for dinner tonight, and I’ll be able to use leftovers from that to make lunch for Monday and Tuesday. It’s something I won’t mind drinking with water, so I’ve already decided to have water for dinner tonight and lunch on Monday and Tuesday. Now I just need to stick to that! Hopefully in a few weeks I’ll be better with lunches and I can focus on something else to improve.

I was low on D (24) then started taking 1000 units/day which brought it up.

Had a 5k this morning. 14 degree weather. I tried to grab a cup of water - it was frozen to the table (and the water was frozen inside). 23:28. Same pace as my 4m last week but not as fast as previous one. I have to get a plan going with intervals.

Nahnah12 - hope your 5k went ok!

When my vitamin D was first tested, it was 13.4 - lab reference was a minimum of 30, so yes, I did feel better after taking 50,000 IU once a week for 8 weeks! I was exhausted and my muscles were really tired all the time, something my doc felt could potentially be related to the deficiency. I do not spend a lot of time in the sun so take 2,000 IU daily.

nahnah, do you have a water bottle you can refill and keep with you throughout the day? I try to drink at least 8 ounces every hour - that way I can enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.

Too late to edit, but I take 2000 IU in the am and then in the pm - so 4k total. It’s important not to take too much as it’s a fat-soluble vitamin - excess can be stored in your body fat and then create other issues.

I got tested for Vit D levels and was fine about a year ago. My doctor was pleasantly surprised, noting most people were low. I told him I live in a sunny climate, am outside every day, and drink milk. Can’t think of any other reasons.

Ran four miles. It was a thinking run. I just ran around the block over and over and worked out some issues.
