Find my friends or life 360 will track you without having to pay like road ID, but a garmin watch or dedicated GPS will also give you tracks to follow, like garmin 910 back to start kind of feature.
Turn off any battery hogging apps if you are phone reliant, wifi if that is an issue, and If you know you are out of range and that drains your battery (searching for service) pause that too. GPS should be OK.
I try not to run on trails alone because I get lost easily.
Swam 2700 then went to spin class. Life has been crazy so I glad to get back to working out hard again. Not crazy bad, in fact many times crazy good, but crazy nonetheless.
I am so scared of getting lost! I’m a bit nervous about this weekend and where I’m supposed to run. It’s supposed to be an easy trail to follow, but I’ve never been there so we’ll see!
Happy to say I drank water instead of Coke for lunch today! And I told my teammates that if they see me with a Coke they need to smack it out of my hands.
I did five miles at the gym today. Weighed myself after, and I’m down about .6 of a pound. I have 9.2 pounds to get to a weight I’d be ok with. I’d like to get down 12.2 really, but I think I need to wait until after state testing is done at work. My school is a Title I school and on the brink of being accredited, so it will be an extremely stressful time next few months. I need to make sure I’m taking care of myself and not worried about numbers, unless my weight starts going back up.
That sounds like a great workout, Lizardly! Swimming used to make me feel so completely exercised and energized and exhausted at the same time. Then spinning – impressive! You’ll sleep well tonight.
The Road ID app is free.
I’ve used it in the past and will use it in the future. My H will check in on me when I’ve sent him notification and see how things are going.
OK, I thought you pay, life 360/FMF tracks you in real time, is that the same? No notifications needed. I use it for my younger drivers and they can use it to find my body if I am killed out on my bike LOL. I don’t find it terrible on battery life.
New Alta HR coming out: https://www.fitbit.com/shop/altahr?utm_source=ET&utm_medium=EM&utm_campaign=20170306_APSV1_NA_F_A_PN_TK_00_NA
I got the email about it and am tempted. Of course I have a whole wardrobe of bands for my Alta that would no longer work. I wonder if it is pretty much the same except for the HR feature and the clasp on the band.
I’m back home and glad to be here!
Alta bands should fit the Alta HR.
Fitbit is already advertising bands on their web site that will fit both.
It seems to have most of the functions of the Charge 2 except for explicit activity tracking and GPS integration with your phone.
ETA: it’s missing a couple other minor features that the Charge 2 has, like cardio fitness level and guided breathing.
Welcome home, MOWC! I give you a lot of credit for fitting in runs while you travel. You will run at 4 am, in the dark, in a parking lot, whereas I use my rare business travel as a chance to skip running for a day or two.
45 degrees and light rain, which was fine. I don’t like running in the rain when it’s windy and it drives the rain like ice pellets on your face.
Question for dog owners – when I come back from my run, I’m running on the sidewalk, which can get kind of crowded with people going to work, kids going to school, people walking their dogs. I love dogs. I grew up with dogs. But this morning, a dog (on a leash) suddenly lunged at me as I went by. The owner pulled back on the leash but I saw those teeth coming at my calf. Near miss. Did I get in its space? Or seem threatening somehow? I pass a lot of dogs with no incident. Appreciate any tips to avoid this in the future.
I had not always been someone who is comfortable with dogs. But we have had one for the last 6 years and that has taught me some things.
Dogs can be awesome!
I tend to avoid going past a dog walking on the sidewalk. I’ll either jog off into the street for a minute or run on the grass yard strip or something if it’s a really narrow sidewalk and not a trail. Did you come up from behind the dog or were you running towards it?
I don’t mind missing a day or two of running either - but I hate missing Pilates when I’ve planned on it. Worked with my trainer this morning but did a lot of hip and calf stretches - I’m realizing I can’t do longer runs so close together.
That’s an owner fail in my opinion, Class - Sabapup reacts to bicycles, mopeds and people running towards us. Sabadog could care less. When we see an approaching “offender”, I move both dogs to the side and they have to sit. I engage Sabapup with eye contact until the “danger” has passed. Some dogs are very reactive and it’s the owner’s job to know that. Glad you weren’t injured.
I was running towards it, abasket. I think I might do what you suggested – which for me would mean either crossing the street (and hoping there isn’t another dog there!) or running in the street. I’ve never had this happen before.
Thanks, Sabaray – you sound like a thoughtful dog owner – I think this woman was distracted and maybe it’s the first time her dog did this. Yes, glad I didn’t come back with bite marks! Thanks
Sabaray is surely a stellar dog owner.
I do the same. When I see someone walking or running towards us - or sense someone behind us, I just pause on the grass or at a driveway and have pup pause too. I can understand that not everyone is a dog person and don’t want to cause any fear - cause I was that person at one time.
I run a lot in our neighborhood so encounter beings of the human and pup variety all the time!!
45 minutes on the Cybex Arc + 5 minutes on this “Lateral” machine, which is one of the new ones at my gym. http://www.octanefitness.com/commercial/products/lateral-ellipticals/lx8000/
Ran across the following article this morning, talking about several exercise machines: http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/4-exercise-machines-that-help-burn-fat-and-build-muscle/?utm_source=salesforce&utm_medium=email&utm_content=placement_hero&utm_campaign=newsletter. Reading about the Airdyne made me think of idad.
When I’m out with our pup, I keep her on a fairly short leash, especially here in our urban setting. When people are coming toward us I either pull her in very close, or stop completely off to the side, still keeping her close. Our pup views everyone as a potential playmate, and LOVES people – but I understand that not everyone see her jumping and general wild enthusiasm as playful.
Our gym actually has one of those, CBB- I’ve never used it! The gym has several pieces of equipment from Octane and they sit mostly unused, which is too bad. I think a lot of people are intimidated by the unfamiliar and don’t want to ask for help. Good article.
There are two men that like to run together around a large block in my neighborhood where I walk the dogs. They run abreast across the width of the sidewalk and I always take the dogs to the side as is my practice. One day I happened to be walking without the dogs and encountered them - and it was clear by their body language that they expected me to move to the side (into the grass) so they could continue as they were. I wondered what they would do if they encountered someone using a walker or a wheelchair. I get wanting to run with your friend, but you don’t own the whole sidewalk.
Sabapup and Sabadog would never survive as city dogs! Come to think of it, I don’t think I’d survive as a city dweller.
I knew sabaray would know the dog answer!
I was SO tired this morning that I couldn’t get up in time to do more than 1 mile on the downstairs treadmill. More after work. It all caught up with me. It’s an ugly, rainy day today. Welcome home!
I’m back among the living now, had a bad cough and cold for past several weeks. Feel like a slug for not working out, but hardly ate, so it evened out.
Just catching up on all of your posts. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all who are injured and sick.
Sad news about Biggest Loser fitness trainer Bob Harper. He suffered a heart attack and was unconcious for two days. Says it runs in his family. Can’t we beat genetics with diet and exercise : /
Glad to see you back, SalveMater! Didn’t realize you were out sick – it’s been going around. Your body needed rest more than exercise.
That is sad. Made me google Jim Fixx for some reason (another person who shouldn’t have died young). “Young” is getting older and older lol…
@Classof2015 — I have a dog who sometimes reacts to people. I try to keep him at double-the-leash-length from people. I pull him over to the side when I can.
